Motor unit loss and remodeling in patients with chronic radiculopathy using the EMG filling analysis
Introduction/Aims: the way in which the EMG signal is progressively filled with motor unit potentials during increasing voluntary contraction provides valuable information about the motor units (MUs) in a muscle. Here, we demonstrate the application of the EMG filling method to detect MU loss and remodeling in patients with chronic radiculopathy.
Methods: concentric needle EMG signals were recorded from the tibialis anterior of 19 radiculopathy patients and 18 healthy controls during voluntary ramped contractions increasing from 0 to maximum. The EMG filling process was analyzed by measuring the EMG filling factor and EMG amplitude during the contraction.
Results: the way in which the filling factor increased with increasing force differed (p < 0.001) between healthy controls (exponential filling curve) and radiculopathy patients (linear curve). The extent to which the EMG envelope amplitude increased throughout the ramp contraction was markedly greater (p < 0.001) in healthy controls (6.1-fold increase) compared to patients (0.5-fold increase). The filling factor at maximal effort was significantly higher in healthy controls than in patients (0.53 ± 0.04 vs. 0.45 ± 0.09, p < 0.001). The EMG filling analysis revealed clear signs of MU loss and remodeling in 85% of patients.
Discussion: the EMG filling analysis is a fast and accessible approach to detect MU loss in radiculopathy patients. Moreover, it provides information about the MU remodeling process and the type of motor units that are predominantly lost in the neurogenic condition. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, PID2022-136620OB-I00.
Gaztainondoa (Castanea sativa Mill.) Nafarroa iparraldean garrantzi handia izan duen arbola izan da. Azken mendean gertatutako aldaketa sozioekonomiko eta gaitz berrien agerpenarekin, bere zaintza erabat baztertu da. Azken urteetan ordea, arbola honekiko interesa handitzen ari da eta Nafarroako Gobernuak berreskurapen lanak hasi zituen orain gutxi.
Master amaierako lan honek, Nafarroan identifikatutako 18 aldaera tradizionalen, 47 gaztainaarbolen karakterizazio fenotipikoa egitea eta hauen artean dagoen harremanak ezartzea eta inguruko lurraldeetan egin diren antzeko lanekin konparatzea, du helburu. Honetarako 16 ezaugarri morfologikotan erabili ditugu, gaztaina- gerbak, morkotsak eta gaztaina-aleak sailkatzeko garaian.
Lan honen emaitzak eranskinean dauden fitxetan plazaratu ditugu. Ondorio nagusi gisa, aipa genezake, erabilitako ezaugarri morfologikoak egonkortasun handia erakutsi dutela. Gainera, ezberdintasun fenotipikoak aurkitu ditugu, genotipo berbereko arbola ezberdinen artean. Aipagarria da, aztertu diren arbola hauek penintsulako beste aldaera tradizional batzuek dituzten ezaugarriak betetzen dituztela, hala eta guztiz ere, ezberdintasun nabarmenak aurkitu ditugu, nafar gaztainondo aldaera tradizionalak, analisi genetikoak adierazitakoaren bidetik, bakarrak direla esateko. The chestnut tree (Castanea sativa Mill.) has historically been of great importance in northern Navarre. However, due to socio-economic changes and the introduction of pests and diseases over the past century, its cultivation has been almost completely abandoned. In recent years, interest in this tree has been growing again, and the Government of Navarre has recently begun recovery efforts.
The purpose of this end-of-master work aims to carry out a phenotypic characterization of the 47 chestnut trees identified in Navarre, to establish the relationships between them, and to compare them with similar studies conducted in neighbouring regions. For this purpose, we used 16 morphological traits to classify the catkins, burrs, and chestnuts.
The results of this study are presented in the data sheets included in the annex. As a conclusion, we can point out that the morphological characteristics used have shown great stability. In addition, we found phenotypic differences between different trees of the same genotype. It is also worth noting that the studied trees share typical characteristics of other traditional varieties from the Iberian Peninsula, although we have found notable differences that support the idea that the traditional chestnut varieties from Navarre are unique.Máster Universitario en Ingeniería Agronómica por la Universidad Pública de NavarraNekazaritza Ingeniaritzako Unibertsitate Masterra Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa
High sensitivity torsion sensor based on Er3+ doped multicore fiber ring laser
This work reports a torsion sensor based on a fiber-ring laser (FRL), whose active element is a 58 cm segment of three inline core erbium-doped fiber (EDF-3C). In this architecture, the multicore fiber simultaneously provides optical gain and torsion transduction. The applied twist alters the inter-core coupling, producing a gain splitting that appears as two laser peaks. The wavelength separation between the peaks encodes the torsion magnitude, whereas their relative powers reveal the twist direction. By fine-tuning the polarization controller, bidirectional operation remained stable over a ±70° range without mode extinction. The differential wavelength shift exhibited linear sensitivities of 0.013 nm/° for negative torsion and 0.019 nm/° for positive torsion. Direction discrimination is further enhanced by analyzing the peak-power difference and is additionally optimized with a function-fitting neural network trained on the measured spectra. The machine learning model achieved R² = 0.9999 and an angular detection limit of 1.28 × 10-4°.This work was supported by project PID2022-137269OB-C21, funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and FEDER "A way to make Europe"
Nationals, indigenous peoples, migrants, stateless persons, refugees and diasporas: a global view from international law
This paper makes a comparison of the legal status of nationals, binationals, multinationals, indigenous peoples, migrants, stateless persons, refugees and diasporas using a legal-descriptive method, with the aim of corroborating the thesis of inequality among them. We are not going to compare every right in the multitude of legal statuses linked to nationality and which, within the limits of respect for human rights, each of the 193 states grant their nationals. Certainly, these statutes contain different civil, political and social rights and duties in areas so different such as social assistance, including education, health or dependency, the age of majority, the right to bear arms or the right to freedom of expression, as well as obligations, such as the military service. International law considers the regulation of all these rights, freedoms and obligations being the domaine réservé of each state.Publication developed within the framework of the EUROPIA Project funded by the European Union, Erasmus+ Programme; Key action 2: Cooperation partnerships; Sector: Higher education, PIC 999888029, Reference: Grant Agreement No.: 2022-1-PL01-KA220-HED-000086334
Obstetric complications, cortical gyrification, and cognition in first-episode psychosis
Background. Obstetric complications (OCs) are associated with cognitive and brain abnormalities observed in patients with schizophrenia. Gyrification, a measure of cortical integrity sensitive to events occurring during the prenatal and perinatal periods, is also altered in firstepisode psychosis (FEP). We examined the relationship between OCs and gyrification in FEP, as well as whether gyrification mediates the relationship between OCs and cognition. Methods. We examined differences in the Local Gyrification Index (LGI) for the frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, and cingulate cortices between 139 FEP patients and 125 healthy controls (HCs). Regression analyses explored whether OCs and diagnosis interact to explain LGI variation. Parametric mediation analyses were conducted to assess the effect of LGI on the relationship between OCs and cognition for FEP and HC. Results. Significant LGI differences were observed between FEP patients and HC in the left parietal and bilateral cingulate and occipital cortices. There was a significant interaction between OCs and diagnosis on the left cingulate cortex (LCC) that was specific to males (p = 0.04) and was driven by gestational rather than intrauterine OCs. In HCs, OCs had a direct effect on working memory (WM) (p = 0.048) in the mediation analysis, whereas in FEP, we observed no significant effect of OCs on either verbal or WM. Conclusions. OCs interact with diagnosis to predict LCC gyrification, such that males with FEP exposed to OCs exhibit the lowest LGI. OCs influence WM, and LCC gyrification may mediate this relation only in HC, suggesting a differential neurodevelopmental process in psychosis. This study is part of a coordinated multicenter Project, PEPs study, funded by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (PI08/0208; PI11/00325; PI14/00612), Instituto de Salud Carlos III - Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional. A comprehensive study of optical resonances in metals, dielectrics, and excitonic materials in double interface structures
From an optical perspective, depending on the relationship between the real (n) and imaginary (k) parts of its refractive index, three broad categories of materials can be distinguished: metals (k ¿ n), dielectrics (n ¿ k), and materials in which n ¿ k (termed here excitonic materials). The modes and optical resonances that appear in a thin film bounded by two dielectrics with similar refractive index, what we call here a double interface structure, have been widely studied in the case of metals, but not for dielectrics, or materials with n ¿ k. In this work, we propose a new approach, based on employing the phase matching condition to correlate the resonances that appear in the wavelength versus incident angle color maps of the reflected power with the modal analysis of the cross section of the structure. This analysis is performed, using an attenuated total reflection (ATR) setup, for thin film materials that belong to each of the mentioned categories: a metal (gold, Au), a dielectric (titanium dioxide, TiO2), and a material with n ¿ k (chromium, Cr). The theoretical analysis is supported with experimental results. It is demonstrated that this method enables to identify any resonance at any wavelength or incident angle, being valid for all three types of materials. Therefore, it is considered the suggested approach will help the research in these materials and in the double interface structure in the optics and photonics field. This work was supported by Agencia Estatal de Investigación (PID2022-137437OB-I00)
Determinants of quality of life decrease in family caregivers of care-dependent patients: a longitudinal study
Purpose
Family caregivers of care-dependent patients experience a decline in their Quality of Life (QoL). However, the determinants contributing to this decrease in QoL are still not fully understood. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate prospectively the determinants contributing to decreased QoL among family caregivers of care-dependent patients.
Methods
This longitudinal study involved 135 family caregivers in Brazil. Data were collected at baseline from October 2016 to August 2017, and at follow-up from December 2021 to July 2022. During both periods, we administered a questionnaire that covered sociodemographic, health, and lifestyle characteristics of the participants; the Barthel Index to assess the dependency level of the patients; and the WHOQOL-bref to assess the caregivers¿ QoL.
Results
Both caregivers and care-dependent patients were more frequently elderly (44.4% versus 74.6%), female (79.3% versus 61.5%), and had non-communicable disease (60.0% versus 94.3%) at baseline. Most patients experienced a worsening in their level of dependency (59.8%), while over a third of family caregivers (34.8%) reported a decline in their General Quality of Life Index. Eight determinants of decreased QoL were identified: four protective factors (religious faith, physical activity, sharing caregiving responsibilities, and sufficient sleep) and four risk factors (patient hospitalization in the past year, patient increased care dependency, older family caregiver age, and longer caregiving duration).
Conclusion
Many factors influencing caregiver QoL are modifiable through intervention, underscoring the need for public policies to support family caregivers. Healthcare professionals can play a vital role in promoting protective factors and addressing risk factors to enhance caregiver QoL.Open Access funding provided by Universidad Pública de Navarra
Deconstructing non-motherhoods. Disruptive experiences of gender and kinship
(no)reproductivas.
Ikerketa honek gaur egungo testuinguru soziokulturaletan haurrik ez izateari buruzko
esperientziak aztertzen ditu. Ikerketa honetako protagonisten ikuspegia ulertzeko,
etnografia feminista bat proposatu dute, ikuspegi, metodo eta testu gisa ulertuta.
Askotariko arrazoi eta baldintza estrukturalak direla medio ama izan ez diren zenbait
emakumeren kontakizun biografikoak aztertu dituzte. Ikerketak egiaztatu du genero eta
ahaidetasun arauek zer-nolako eragina duten ama izan nahiaren eta ugaltzeko
betebeharraren eraikuntzan, bai eta ez ugaltzeko erabakietan ere. Tesi honen ekarpen
nagusien artean, bost ideia nabarmentzen dira: 1) ama izan nahia «ezkutuko desira» gisa,
eta «toki propio baten» bilaketa; 2) amatasunik ezaren ordain soziala prestigiorik eza da;
3) amatasunaren hegemonia aldatu eta birpentsatu egiten da hura zalantzan jartzen
duten praktika sozial disruptiboen bidez; 4) ama sozialen zeregina, zeinek ama-lan
desiratuak edo delegatuak egiten baitituzte; eta 5) erreferente berrien eraikuntza genero
eta ahaidetasun-harremanetan eta bizitzaren zenbait espaziotan. Tesiak ondorioztatu du
informatzaileek erabili dituzten jarduteko modu autonomoak erresistentzia- edo
transgresio-bide bilakatu direla, eta esperientzia disruptiboak eratu dituztela generoaren
eta ahaidetasunaren arloan. This research explores the experience of non-motherhoods in contemporary
sociocultural contexts. The study proposes a feminist ethnography, understood as a
focus, method and text, used to understand the perspective of the female subjects. It
analyses biographical stories from women who are not mothers, due to various reasons
and structural conditions. The research confirms the influence of gender and kinship
norms over constructing the desire for motherhood and the duty to procreate, and on
(non)reproductive decisions. Five key ideas stand out among the contributions from this
thesis: 1) the desire for motherhood as a «hidden desire» and the search for «a place of
one’s own»; 2) the social price of non-motherhood is lack of prestige; 3) the hegemony
of motherhood is altered and re-thought by disruptive social practices that question it;
4) the role of social mothers, who perform chosen or delegated mothering practices; and
5) building new reference points in gender and kinship relations, and in different living
spaces. The thesis concludes that autonomy practices recounted by the informants
become resistance or transgression practices, shaping disruptive experiences of gender
and kinship.Programa de Doctorado en Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales (RD 99/2011)Giza eta Gizarte Zientzietako Doktoretza Programa (ED 99/2011
