Combinatorial Synthesis and High-Throughput Physical Property Screening of Rhombohedral Sesquioxide Thin Films: α-Ga2O3 and Ternary Alloys Based thereon
Introduction

Acknowledgement-Ga₂O₃ is an ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor, with potential applications as a solar blind ultraviolett (UV) photodetector. Due to its rhombohedral crystal structure, alloying to isostructural -Al₂O₃ and various transition metal sesquioxides like e.g., -Cr₂O₃ and -V₂O₃, enables bandgap engineering over an unprecedented large spectral range from the infrared to the deep-UV. In the present work, the realization of spatially-addressable -(Ga,Al,Cr,V,Ti)₂O₃ material libraries by combinatorial pulsed laser deposition (c-PLD) and the subsequent high-throughput screening of their physical properties are discussed. In the first part of this thesis the development of a comprehensive model for the numerical description of lateral composition and thickness distributions arising during c-PLD are presented. An error in a well-established adiabatic plasma plume expansion model is identified and corrected, such that a real-world description of PLD processes is feasible from now on. In the second part of this thesis, the growth of -Ga2O3 thin films by PLD is presented. Therefore, for the first time a comprehensive phase diagram for the growth of Ga2O3 on m-plane sapphire is constructed, exhibiting a distinct growth window for metastable -Ga₂O₃ thin films with up to now unprecedented structural quality. Based on optimized process parameters, material libraries of (CrₓGa₁₋ₓ)₂O₃, (VₓGa₁₋ₓ)₂O₃ and (TiₓGa₁₋ₓ)₂O₃ with continuous composition spread were deposited by c-PLD. Their physical properties were mapped by high throughput laterally resolved X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission measurements. Comparisons of the measured compositional distribution of the thin films to the c-PLD model developed earlier are discussed, revealing insight into the growth kinetics of the different sesquioxides. For both, (CrₓGa₁₋ₓ)₂O₃ and (VₓGa₁₋ₓ)₂O₃, phase-pure growth in the rhombohedral -phase was confirmed by XRD measurements over the investigated composition range of 0. 08<(Cr) <0. 54 and 0. 07<(V) <0. 62. The absorption onset energy of the -(VₓGa₁₋ₓ)₂O₃ thin films showed a systematic shift for increasing (V) from 5.3 eV to 2.9 eV. With that, bandgap engineering within the rhombohedral sesquioxide material system towards lower energies over a wide spectral range is demonstrated for the first time. These results are promising for possible applications of the material system as e.g., a wavelength selective photodetector.:1. Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic: Implications for work-privacy-conflict and parent–child-bonding in mothers and fathers
During the COVID-19 pandemic, working parents have been faced with a double burden by struggling to satisfy their children’s needs as well as dealing with altered working requirements at the same time. In the unprecedented context of a pandemic, the present study extends the existing literature to investigate the association between work-privacy-conflict (WPC) and parent–child-bonding in families with children aged 0–34 months old. Additionally, the potential moderating role of working from home is considered. Data of the present cross-sectional study (n = 385) were collected in Germany between May and June 2020 as part of the DREAMCORONA study. Mothers (n = 165) and fathers (n = 220) currently working completed the Work-Privacy-Conflict Scale and the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire. A hierarchical linear regression analysis including the confounders sex, working from home, working hours per week, age of index child, and childcare revealed a significant association between higher WPC and poorer parent–child-bonding (ß = 0.154, 95 % CI [0.02, 0.28]). In a second linear regression analysis stratified by sex, only the association within the sample of men remained significant (ß = 0.240, 95 % CI [0.07, 0.39]). Working from home had no significant moderating effect on the association between WPC and parent–child-bonding. Given our results, it seems particularly important for working parents to maintain a balance between work and private life as it could not only affect themselves but also the emotional connection to their child. Future research should consider additional factors, such as mental health, parenting, and couple dynamics when investigating the interference of WPC with parent–child-bonding. Additionally, a longitudinal approach will be necessary to establish causal relations between WPC and parent–child-bonding
Traditional metric indicators of scientific productivity (e. g., journal impact factors, h-index) have been criticized because (a) empirical studies cast doubt on their validity, and (b) they seem to foster a culture that prioritizes quantity over quality. Calls for specific, more valid alternatives to the current performance measures are growing louder. After adopting both DORA and CoARA, the German Psychological Society tasked a work group with outlining a more responsible form of research evaluation for psychology. Here, we report on the current status of this project; specifically, we propose a two-stage evaluation process that combines the objectivity and efficiency of metric indicators (Stage 1) with an in-depth, discursive evaluation of actual research content (Stage 2). We argue in favor of broadening the range of relevant research contributions and propose quality criteria for published research articles, datasets, and research software which focus on the methodological rigor of such contributions. These criteria are used in Phase 1 of the evaluation process to establish a minimum threshold of methodological rigor candidates must pass to be considered for hiring or promotion. In contrast, Phase 2 of the evaluation process focuses more on the actual content of the candidate’s research findings, no longer making much use of metrics. We offer assessment tools that have already undergone some testing in actual assessment practice. Our goal is to initiate a broad discussion about this topic and ultimately to help strengthen the role scientific quality plays in the course of academic hiring and promotion proceedings
Multimodal additive manufacturing of biomimetic tympanic membrane replacements with near tissue-like acousto-mechanical and biological properties
The three additive manufacturing techniques fused deposition modeling, gel plotting and melt electrowriting were combined to develop a mimicry of the tympanic membrane (TM) to tackle large TM perforations caused by chronic otitis media. The mimicry of the collagen fiber orientation of the TM was accompanied by a study of multiple funnel-shaped mimics of the TM morphology, resulting in mechanical and acoustic properties similar to those of the eardrum. For the different 3D printing techniques used, the process parameters were optimized to allow reasonable microfiber arrangements within the melt electrowriting setup. Interestingly, the fiber pattern was less important for the acousto-mechanical properties than the overall morphology. Furthermore, the behavior of keratinocytes and fibroblasts is crucial for the repair of the TM, and an in vitro study showed a high biocompatibility of both primary cell types while mimicking the respective cell layers of the TM. A simulation of the in vivo ingrowth of both cell types resulted in a cell growth orientation similar to the original collagen fiber orientation of the TM. Overall, the combined approach showed all the necessary parameters to support the growth of a neo-epithelial layer with a similar structure and morphology to the original membrane. It therefore offers a suitable alternative to autologous materials for the treatment of chronic otitis media

Deciphering the genetic basis of immune thrombocytopenia: current evidence for genetic predisposition in adult ITP
Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is the consequence of a complex, still incompletely understood immunological dysregulation. Proposed mechanisms include autoantibody-induced platelet destruction, impaired platelet production as well as abnormalities in T-cell immunity, such as T helper cells (Th1) polarization, a high proportion of Th17 cells, and a reduced number of regulatory T cells. Although the etiology of ITP is incompletely understood and considered multifactorial in most cases, genetic variants are thought to play a key role in susceptibility to ITP, especially in persistent or chronic ITP. Efforts are currently underway to uncover possible predisposing genetic factors for the development of ITP. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms and copy number variations have been identified in several immune-related genes, such as cytokine genes, Fcγ receptor genes or T-cell costimulation genes, and have been associated with patients’ susceptibility to ITP. However, because of the clinical heterogeneity and low incidence of ITP it remains challenging to perform genetic analyses with sufficiently large sample size within informative patient populations, highlighting the need for collection of well-annotated biomaterials in clinical trials or registry projects. Another significant challenge is to go beyond performing association studies alone and to establish genotype-phenotype associations, thus proving causality between a genetic alteration and ITP pathogenesis. This review summarizes our current knowledge on genetic alterations identified as potential predisposing factors for the development of ITP in adults, thereby addressing signaling pathways considered critical for ITP pathogenesis
Investigation of the Crack Behavior of CRC Using 4D Computed Tomography, Photogrammetry, and Fiber Optic Sensing
The highly irregular crack pattern of reinforced concrete has been studied primarily at the surface. The ability to extend image correlation into the interior of structures by using X-ray computed tomography (CT) opens up new possibilities for analyzing the internal mechanics of concrete. In order to enable a complete material characterization, it is necessary to study the crack geometry at the micro level in 3D images over time, i.e., 4D data. This paper presents the results of in situ CT tests that were carried out on carbon-reinforced concrete (CRC) beams subjected to bending load. The main objective of the tests was the experimental analysis of the evolution of individual cracks at different stages of their formation by applying digital volume correlation (DVC) to the 4D image data from the computed tomography. The results obtained from the CT were compared with other measurement techniques, such as distributed fiber optic sensing, clip gauges, and digital image correlation (DIC)
