    Matriarchy, Gender and Power: Interdisciplinary perspectives

    International audienceThis book explores the conceptualizations of female power through the notion of matriarchy in a variety of historical, cultural and epistemological contexts.Matriarchy has been both marginalized, and even derided, as an object of study albeit consistently referred to as a symbol of female power. The lack of serious engagement with matriarchy has stifled critical inquiry into alternative ways of organizing gendered power, and this gap is that this book seeks to address. Re-examining matriarchy from a scientific and interdisciplinary perspective, this book aims to move beyond the simplistic binaries of male vs. female power through diverse enquiries into the concept of matriarchy that conceptualizes power not as domination, but as interconnection, nurturing, and community-oriented leadership. Through this approach, the contributions examine the emancipatory possibilities of matriarchy, while also acknowledging the limitations and challenges that come with it.An interdisciplinary approach having international scope, this work will appeal to postgraduate students and academic researchers of Sociology, Anthropology, History, Art History, Asian Studies, American Studies, African American and Africana Studies, Women’s Studies, Gender Studies, and Law

    Mechanisms of coffee-ring suppression in Picoliter silver nanoparticle ink droplets: Implications for printed electronics

    International audienceThe coffee-ring effect (CRE) remains a major obstacle to achieving uniform functional deposits in high-resolution printed electronics, particularly for picoliter-scale droplets where evaporation dynamics are complex and poorly understood. This study demonstrates that precise control of substrate temperature is a highly effective strategy for suppressing the CRE in inkjet-printed picoliter droplets of a commercial silver nanoparticle ink. We identify a distinct morphological transition: uniform deposits form at low temperatures (20–40 °C), pronounced coffee-rings develop at intermediate temperatures (50–70 °C), and central accumulation emerges at high temperatures (>90 °C). Through a combination of experimental analysis, scaling arguments, and numerical simulations, we systematically rule out Marangoni flows and viscous dissipation as the primary suppression mechanisms at low temperatures. Instead, we show that the extended drying time at low substrate temperatures drastically reduces the Péclet number, shifting the dominant transport mechanism from outward capillary advection to inward particle diffusion. This diffusion-driven homogenization ensures uniform particle redistribution prior to immobilization. Our findings provide a robust, practical, and readily applicable thermal strategy for eliminating capillary-driven inhomogeneities, paving the way toward the reliable fabrication of high-resolution printed electronic devices with superior morphological and functional uniformit

    Residual stresses and strains during laser assisted tape placement of thermoplastic composite: Multi-physical modelling and experimental validation

    International audienceThe prediction of residual stresses and strains during laser-assisted tape placement of thermoplastic composite has been investigated by numerous studies in the literature. They are however rarely validated compared to experimental results and based on simplifications of the material thermomechanical behaviour. This study proposes a multi-physical model to address the heat transfer, crystallization kinetics, the induced thermal and crystallization strains as well as the mechanical behaviour of the material during processing. The thermal and crystallization models were already validated in a previous study, and the mechanical behaviour is described with an incremental linear elastic constitutive law and the Classical Lamination Theory. The thermomechanical properties are based on values from the literature and the supplied datasheet. Without any fine tuning of the model, predicted curvatures of cross ply laminates are well described, as well as their evolution with the temperature after manufacturing and during annealing. The measured and calculated curvatures are found in excellent agreement with errors comprised between 2% and 13%. A sensitivity analysis demonstrates that the developed model is more able to correctly reproduce the experimentally observed material behaviour compared to simplified approaches found in the literature

    International audienceAncient cultures are studied through literary sources and artefacts, both of which are limited and often contradictory. Scholarly traditions often privilege one type of evidence over the other, depending on their research questions and the stories they want to tell. As a result, our understanding of the past may be shaped by bias. New archaeological discoveries force historians to rethink their views of the past. Missing evidence, though difficult to identify, can lead to educated guesses and a re-evaluation of previous ideas. However, over-reliance on a single dataset leads to the risk of overlooking important perspectives. While scholars have developed methods for dealing with insufficient data, methodological reflection on the subject is rare.This volume presents case studies from ancient civilisations that explore how different types of missing evidence (e.g. missing, contradictory or neglected evidence) affect our perceptions of ancient cultures and shape the narratives we provide. Covering Southwest Asia, China, India, Greece, Etruria, early Christianity, Mesoamerica and Central Asian Buddhism, it invites scholars to compare the situation in their own fields to the state-of-the-art in others

    System-level monitoring and diagnosis of starvation faults in solid oxide electrolyzers

    International audienceThis paper presents a model-based methodology for real-time fault detection in Solid Oxide Cells (SOCs), focusing on fuel-side starvation in electrolysis mode. Steam starvation occurs when consumption exceeds supply, while hydrogen starvation arises from an insufficient inlet fraction; both risking electrode degradation. With limited measurements, a lumped model with a square-root Unscented Kalman Filter is adopted to estimate gas partial pressures, stack temperature, and deviations from the nominal inlet fuel flow rate, using stack voltage, outlet air temperature, and outlet hydrogen flow rate measurements. Faults are flagged when the estimated states exceed adaptive thresholds derived from nominal predictions via moving-window filter. For quantification, the observer is augmented with two states capturing deviations in inlet steam and hydrogen flow rates. Furthermore, the total resistance is calculated: it increases under steam starvation and remains nearly unchanged under hydrogen starvation.
