Burlesque et merveilleux dans « La Princesse Printanière » de Madame d'Aulnoy
International audience« La Princesse Printanière », conte de Madame d’Aulnoy (Contes des fées, 1697), présente un merveilleux fortement perturbé par le registre burlesque qui marque l’intégralité du conte. Loin de s’exclure, merveilleux et burlesque sont nécessaires simultanément pour permettre les ruptures de ton, principes du comique burlesque ; cependant l’effet burlesque est employé de manière si systématique par la conteuse qu’on peut se demander s’il ne ruine pas toute possibilité de suspension d’incrédulité, et par conséquent toute forme de merveilleux. La tension qu’elle maintient entre ces deux registres lui sert en fait à esquisser une morale inattendue : non pas dans le sens d’un conte d’avertissement contre les méfaits des passions et les dangers de l’amour (le dénouement topique au possible ne se fait qu’au prix d’un merveilleux passablement ridicule), mais afin de raconter l’histoire d’une fille qui se libère par ses propres forces, se bat, connaît des échecs et apprend la douleur, mais réussit à atteindre le terme de son initiation, dont elle a eu elle-même l’initiative
On a geometric graph-covering problem related to optimal safety-landing-site location
International audienceWe propose integer-programming formulations for an optimal safety-landing site (SLS) location problem that arises in the design of urban air-transportation networks. We first develop a set-cover based approach for the case where the candidate location set is finite and composed of points, and we link the problems to solvable cases that have been studied. We then use a mixed-integer second-order cone program to model the situation where the locations of SLSs are restricted to convex sets only. Finally, we introduce strong fixing, which we found to be very effective in reducing the size of integer programs.</div

Operando photocatalytic cell for time-resolved XAS/GC analysis of gas phase CO 2 photoreduction
International audienceThis article reports an operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) cell and its set-up for the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 in the gas phase. Details about the cell and set-up development and configuration are provided. The operando cell and set-up are validated from a photocatalytic point of view: the performances of two photocatalysts are successfully benchmarked with those obtained on an already existing gas phase photoreactor unit. The cell is also validated from an XAS point of view as measured Mo K -edge spectra of the photocatalyst loaded in the cell are similar to those measured for ex situ samples, prepared in a capillary. Finally, a detailed example of an operando photocatalytic experiment shows the potentiality of the developed cell to monitor photocatalysts under working conditions for gas phase CO 2 photoreduction, making the link between a shift in the absorption edge due to Mo species evolution and the deactivation of the photocatalyst. Additionally, the developed operando cell, available at Synchrotron SOLEIL on the ROCK beamline, is versatile and may actually be used for any photocatalytic gas phase reaction
Chamber implant for chronic optical recordings from the cerebral cortex of marmosets
International audienceBackground: Marmosets are becoming an increasingly important animal model in Neuroscience and optical approaches such as two-photon microscopy are expected to provide data significantly contributing to our understanding of the brain, especially when performed chronically. New method: We describe a novel imaging chamber that provides an optical window onto the marmoset cerebral cortex over several months, together with the surgery needed for its implantation and that of an associated headpost. MRI data allow optimal positioning on the skull. The chamber is tightly inserted into a craniotomy and its sealing system combines a thread with a silicone elastomer minimizing infection risk and CSF leakage. Continuous contact between the window and the cortex delays tissue regrowth. Opening and sterile re-sealing are easy to perform whenever access to the cortex is needed. Results: Functional data from longitudinal two-photon imaging using genetically encoded fluorescent calcium sensors reveal high optical quality over months. We also demonstrate the feasibility of two-photon imaging of genetically encoded voltage sensors in the marmoset cortex in-vivo.Comparison with existing methods: The chamber provides a field of view twice as large as current designs yet can be machined with standard equipment. Using a curved rather than flat glass window together with easy adjustment of the window's distance with respect to the underlying cortex allows achieving gentle but continuous contact with the underlying cortex. Conclusions: Currently, our chamber already provides a durable solution for long-term imaging in marmosets. Yet, we discuss a few straightforward modifications that may improve its performance even further.</div

Fast Landmark Reconfiguration for Highway Cover Indexes
International audienceThe highway cover labeling (HCL) is an indexing method for weighted digraphs that enables fast queries on important graph properties such as distances and constrained shortest paths. Originally introduced by [Farhan et al., EDBT 2019], the HCL has gained popularity in the field of large-scale graph mining due to its efficiency: in fact, an HCL index can be computed with reasonable preprocessing computational effort, answers queries in near real time, and has low space overhead -even for graphs with tens of millions of arcs. Such a remarkable performance is obtained by carefully selecting, during the preprocessing phase, a subset of the vertices of the input graph, called landmarks, and by computing a suitable collection of paths and distances from/to landmarks to be used to reconstruct graph properties of interest upon query.Recent work has shown how to adapt the HCL method to dynamic graphs, allowing updates to the graph topology without full recomputation, by identifying and updating, efficiently, the portion of the index that is altered by a modification. However, no prior dynamic methods, to efficiently handle changes to the landmark set itself, are known. This paper addresses this limitation by introducing two new dynamic algorithms specifically designed for landmark updates. Our experiments show that these methods can update an HCL index in seconds even in massive graphs -achieving speedups of several orders of magnitude over full reprocessing and enabling the use of HCL indices in fully dynamic settings.</div
Adaptive LASSO Quantile Regression with Fixed Effects
International audienceQuantile regression with fixed effects for longitudinal data accounts for individual-specific intercepts.When the number of individuals is large relative to the number of repeated measurements and the covariate dimension is high, we propose a dimension-reduction approach based on the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) penalty. Specifically, we extend adaptive LASSO quantile regression to accommodate longitudinal data. The proposed method retains oracle properties, including asymptotic normality and consistent variable selection. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that it performs best under moderate dimensionality, while also outperforming alternative methods in low-dimensional settings, though with smaller margins.The practical relevance of the approach is illustrated through two real-world applications: French electricity consumption and the Millennium Cohort Study. Using departmental-level data from France, we analyze non-residential electricity consumption to uncover patterns in energy demand. The log-transformed outcome remains markedly skewed, emphasizing the need for models capable of handling non-Gaussian distributions. Drawing on data from the Millennium Cohort Study, we examine factors associated with children's internalizing difficulties across different quantiles of the outcome distribution, identifying maternal mental health (Kessler scale) as the most influential predictor.</p
