The learning patterns model in Primary Education: a mixed methods approach

    No full text
Understanding students’ Learning Patterns involves identifying their school conceptions, motivations, and strategies. While literature on learning patterns has focused on Higher Educa-tion, some studies have already demonstrated the relevance of the theoretical model in Primary Education, although they indicate the need for adaptations, ensuring its proper adaptation to the corresponding educational stage. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research aims to explore the structure of the model at this stage; we administered the Inventory of Learning patterns of Students to 218 students and incorporated a qualitative approach with a subgroup of 25. Results showed a group of students with a predominantly undirected pattern; however, there is a group that still does not present a clearly defined learning pattern. The qualitative contributions allow a better understanding of the meaning given by students to the elements of the model. The results show a structure like the original model in terms of regulation strategies. While different conceptions, motivations, and processing strategies emerge, albeit compatible with the theory. New elements are identified to consider in adapting the learning patterns theoretical model to this stage, including emotional aspects, as well as conceptions and expec-tations regarding the family. These findings emerge from qualitative contributions, which are essential for a richer description and explanation of the data regarding the learning processes.

This article analyzes the differences in perception of the degree in Tourism between students and the hotel business community in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. To this end, the professional aspirations of students are taken into account through their experience as students by means of 329 surveys that gather their perceptions of the degree, i ts functionality, and the value of the knowledge ac quired in the labor market, and these are contrasted with the assessments of the city's leading hotel managers gathered in personal and semi -structured interviews. Taking into account the divergences between expectations, the priority of skills, and labor realism, the text proposes Bandura's theory ( 1977) as an explanatory framework for understanding how observational models create bridges that foster the construction of professional aspiration

    No full text
Objectives: This thesis analyzes the design and implementation of the CUTE at UNCuyo Project, which is an institutional development process with the objective of strengthening teaching digital competence as a tool for the improvement of educational quality through the digital transformation of the National University of Cuyo (Mendoza, Argentina), UNCuyo. The development process implemented was based on the methodology and tools of the CUTE Project (Competences for Using Technology in Education in Universities), an Erasmus+ initiative which took place between 2019 and 2022, and which produced strategies and methods for working towards the promotion of the DigCompEdu framework among its teaching staff in the European context. Methodology: Following a qualitative approach, a case study design, and with elements of action research, this thesis looks into and analyzes the dynamics, barriers, lessons learned, and insights from this institutional development process at UNCuyo. An implementation strategy based on a set of interdependent, institutional actions has allowed the process to be adapted to the needs detected in each of its stages. Triangulation is supported by the use of a number of diverse and complementary strategies for data collection and interpretation, and the methodology used includes the analysis of institutional documents, the review of university websites, in-depth interviews with key informants at different levels, seminars with representatives from the faculties, and the creation of working groups made up of members of the teaching staff. This approach supported a comprehensive understanding of the process itself and a flexible and contextualized intervention within the university. Results and conclusions: The main insights gained confirmed the achievement of the objectives proposed, especially in the diagnosis, design, implementation, and validation of the strategies and activities to foster teaching digital competence among UNCuyo’s faculty. Also, the project facilitated a culture of institutional change, as well as the creation of semi-independent teacher working groups, and supported the increase of awareness in the whole educational community. Emerging findings suggest the importance of institutionalizing projects of this kind, defining and strengthening leadership at all levels, considering the socio-emotional and pedagogical elements of change, engaging in strategic planning, and creating trustful working and reflecting environments for the individuals. However, some challenges identified were the limited institutional articulation and a weak sustainability of the project for the mid- and long-term. All in all, the project validated both the methodology and tools of the CUTE model, confirming their usefulness as levers for change, but only if these are backed by the institution and come with a shared vision and a sustained and visible commitment from the leadership of the university

Glioblastoma (GB) is the most frequent and aggressive malignant primary tumor of the central nervous system in adults. Classified by the World Health Organization as grade IV, IDH-wild type diffuse glioma, GB exhibits [marked histological and molecular heterogeneity, aggressive infiltration of surrounding brain tissue, and nearly inevitable recurrence after treatment.] Its poor prognosis arises from several biological features, including tumor plasticity, therapy resistance, and immune evasion mechanisms. Glioma stem cells (GSCs), a subpopulation of tumor-initiating cells with self-renewal capacity, drive tumor initiation, progression, and recurrence. In parallel, the tumor microenvironment (TME) sustains tumor growth and suppresses anti-tumor immunity. Within this niche, pericytes (PCs)-vascular mural cells located on the abluminal side of microvessels-play a crucial role. Normally essential for vascular homeostasis and tissue repair, PCs are reprogrammed by GB cells, acquiring immunosuppressive and pro-tumorigenic properties that facilitate tumor invasion. A key mechanism underlying these changes is chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA), a selective lysosomal degradation pathway regulating protein quality control, metabolism, and stress adaptation. This thesis investigates the role of CMA in maintaining the mesenchymal properties of PCs under physiological and pathological conditions, explores the prognostic value of CMA-dependent perivascular markers, and evaluates novel therapeutic strategies targeting GB-conditioned PCs (GBCPCs). Chapter I explores how CMA regulates the MSC-like functions of PCs during tissue repair following demyelinating injury. Inflammatory mediators such as IFNg downregulate CMA in PCs, suppressing stemness and promoting a pro-inflammatory secretome. We demonstrate that modulating CMA in host PCs reduces inflammation and enhances tissue repair, suggesting a therapeutic approach applicable beyond brain injury. Chapter II validates lumican and osteopontin (OPN) as CMA-dependent prognostic biomarkers in the perivascular niche of GB patients. Using xenografted mice and patient samples, we show that lumican expression associates with CMA-deficient PCs and tumor regression, while OPN correlates with CMA-active PCs and tumor invasion. GB-induced CMA activity in peritumoral PCs correlates with tumor infiltration and patient survival, defining three severity levels. Sex-based differences were also observed, with higher incidence in middle-aged men but worse prognosis in women. Lumican and OPN thus serve as predictive biomarkers for prognosis and for monitoring immune responses mediated by PCs in GB progression. Chapter III examines CMA inhibition in PCs as a therapeutic strategy using the phosphopeptide P140, known to normalize aberrant CMA in immune cells. In immunocompetent GB mouse models with patient-derived GSCs and GB cell lines, P140 administration blocked GB-induced CMA upregulation in PCs, disrupted PC-tumor interactions, and induced a secretome toxic to GB cells. We identified tau, a CMA substrate, as a key secreted component whose accumulation and release by PCs reactivated anti-tumor functions. Perivascular tau accumulation was proposed as a marker of treatment efficacy and patient prognosis. Overall, these findings validate P140 as a safe, specific therapy that restores PC anti-tumor activity and halts GB progression, while highlighting extracellular tau as a biomarker of therapeutic success.Chapter IV investigates the therapeutic potential of eliminating GBCPCs using CD19-targeted CAR-T cells. RNA-seq analyses identified CD19 expression in GBCPCs dependent on GB-induced CMA. In GB patients, CD19 expression was significantly higher in peritumoral PCs than in normal tissue. In vitro and in vivo, CD19 CAR-T cells selectively eliminated GBCPCs without affecting unconditioned PCs, reprogramming the TME and enhancing anti-tumor immunity. These results position CD19 as a novel target antigen to eradicate tumor-conditioned stromal cells and restrain GB progression

From the lens of the Entrepreneurial University, the institution integrates an entrepreneurial mindset into the management and commits to Entrepreneurial Education (EE) to foster potential entrepreneurship. Studying this reality from a competency-based approach is particularly interesting and useful from an applied angle. Entrepreneurial competences are understood to be highly relevant for entrepreneurship. However, the research has been more oriented to study their effect on entrepreneurial activity and success, lacking studies that analyze their impact on the first stage, the formation of entrepreneurial intentions (EI). This research is novel extending the broadly validated Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) by integrating specific entrepreneurial competences as antecedents of EI. With a sample of 732 university students, this research presents a SEM model that permits to jointly analyze the effect of six different entrepreneurial competences (creativity, opportunity recognition, networking, resilience, consistency of interest, and perseverance of effort) on EI, considering the three TPB dimensions: personal attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. The results show that not all competences are significant for EI and their influence differs markedly. Creativity proves to be a key competence for the potential entrepreneurship stage while the two competences that comprise the psychological Grit concept have no influence on EI. The findings are linked to pedagogical recommendations, presenting valuable insights for EE. Entrepreneurial training based on competences must be designed more consciously, targeting particular competences and considering the specific phase of the entrepreneurial process

Genetic selection has improved the prolificacy of sows, which is reflected in an increase in litter size, and the proper nutrition of gilts and sows has changed simultaneously due to improved productivity. Due to this intense genetic selection, there has been a very noticeable decrease in the fat reserves of the gilts accompanied by changes in the basal metabolism of the pigs. Most nutrient recommendations are based on research with sows that were much less prolific and productive than those found on today's farms. Therefore, the nutrient requirements of modern sows are poorly understood compared to our knowledge of growing pigs. Changes in sow performance have had important effects on their nutritional requirements due to increased prolificacy, milk production and larger body size which imply higher requirements. Therefore, the fundamental data underlying current sow feeding models need to be updated. Simulation models are tools used in both research and industry to match nutrient recommendations to animal productivity targets and help us make decisions on feeding strategies based on feed production costs. We have to address several emerging issues: sustainability, environmental impact, profitability or animal welfare. The right combination of an environmentally friendly feeding regime and diet formulation through a nutritional approach will be most effective in reducing nutrient excretion in pig production. In the early stages of gestation, the major amino acid requirement is for maternal body augmentation, while in the later stages of gestation it is for the development of foetal and mammary tissue. For the last third, feed intake should be increased, especially to take into account the increased metabolic needs during gestation, as well as the increase in litter size, avoiding overfeeding the sows at this stage. The aim of the modelling proposed in this work was to achieve new nutritional programmes in pregnant and lactating sows. This study was carried out over a period of 3 years. Body weight, backfat thickness (TBT), loin depth (LP), litter weight and feed intake during gestation and lactation were recorded. EGD and PL were measured by ultrasound at mating, calving and weaning. Similarly, 74 yearlings were monitored from weaning to first mating during their rebreeding phase. Females were fed once a day during gestation and twice a day during lactation. The model described by Dourmad et al. (1999, 2008) served as the basis for the gestation model. For the lactation model, the model described by Dourmad et al. (2008) was also used and contrasted with that of Hansen. It is vital to consider how sows utilise nutrients for reproduction. Therefore, appropriate feeding strategies allow for better nutrition and less nutrient excretion. Nutritional intakes must be adapted to maintain body reserves in optimal condition throughout their productive life and thus optimise their reproductive performance, which requires precise adjustment of feeding level, nutritional composition of feed, environmental and housing conditions, etc. as these directly affect nutrient utilisation and voluntary intake

Morphologic and molecular diagnostic criteria of malignancies in biliary strictures

    Get PDF
The differential diagnosis of benign and malignant biliary strictures is not always feasible and still represents a major diagnostic challenge, mainly due to the scarcity of the tissue retrieved for proper cytological or histopathological diagnosis. The present review focuses on morphological criteria in the diagnosis of biliary strictures, in the course of primary sclerosing cholangitis and other pathologies, starting from the limits of the cytological and histological evaluation, as well as the ancillary methodologies currently available in Pathology laboratories The current guidelines suggest fluorescence in situ hybridization for the analysis of chromosomes 3, 7, and 17 polysomies and deletion of the 9p21 locus; however, other more promising techniques are on the horizon for both patient care and research purposes, such as Next-Generation Sequencing, able to analyze multiple genes simultaneously in a cost-effective fashion. Lastly, the most recent approaches proposed in the literature for the differential diagnosis of biliary stricture are described, such as circulating tumor DNA, miRNAs, and DNA methylation, among others
