Implementation and testing of a service system with smart and modular special load carriers
Under- and overstocks, missing load carriers and special transports are problems that occur due to insufficient transparency in a supply chain. Therefore, current re-search approaches in the field of logistics focus on smart objects and cyber-physical systems that collect process-relevant data and thus contribute to an in-crease in transparency and the optimization of the supply chain. This article shows how innovative prod-uct and databased services (e.g. automatic inventory management, condition monitoring) can be imple-mented using smart and modular special load carriers. The experiments with the service system, the architec-ture and the hardware show the achievable benefits and technology-related limits. Among other things, manual process steps within the container circuit and necessary documentations in the supply chain are dig-itized with the help of the service system. The increased transparency in current stocks and damaged goods al-so actively contributes to an improved process quality for the supply chain partners
Getting Data Subject Rights Right A submission to the European Data Protection Board from international data rights academics, to inform regulatory guidance
We are a group of academics active in research and practice around data rights. We believe that the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) guidance on data rights currently under development is an important point to resolve a variety of tensions and grey areas which, if left unaddressed, may significantly undermine the fundamental right to data protection. All of us were present at the recent stakeholder event on data rights in Brussels on 4 November 2019, and it is in the context and spirit of stakeholder engagement that we have created this document to explore and provide recommendations and examples in this area. This document is based on comprehensive empirical evidence as well as CJEU case law, EDPB (and, previously, Article 29 Working Party) guidance and extensive scientific research into the scope, rationale, effects and general modalities of data rights
Designing Mobile Multimodal Interaction for Visually Impaired and Older Adults: Challenges and Possible Solutions
This paper presents two early studies aimed at investigating issues concerning the design of multimodal in- teraction - based on voice commands and one-hand mid-air gestures - with mobile technology specifically designed for visually impaired and elderly users. These studies were carried out on a new device allowing enhanced speech recognition (including lip movement analysis) and mid-air gesture interaction on Android operating system (smartphone and tablet PC). We discuss the initial findings and challenges raised by these novel interaction modalities, and in particular the issues regarding the design of feedback and feedforward, the problem of false positives, and the correct orientation and distance of the hand and the device during the interaction. Finally, we present a set of feedback and feedforward solutions designed to overcome the main issues highlighted
Conceptualizations of the controller in permissionless blockchains
The relationship between blockchain and the General Data Protection Regulation (hereinafter GDPR) is often described as problematic. This article addresses one of the problems blockchain faces: who is/are the controller(s) in a blockchain context? This article demonstrates that it is particularly difficult to identify the controller in blockchain applications that are integrated in the core code of a permissionless blockchain. The P2P character of blockchains, with its broad distribution of responsibilities, makes it difficult to ascertain who is able to determine purposes and means of the processing of data. In order to structure the discussion, this article develops three conceptualizations of cooperation within a blockchain. These conceptualizations give different perspectives on the relations between the actors in a blockchain that are potential controllers. The article identifies who is most likely to be the controller in the different conceptualizations and gives indications about the extent to which the controllers are able to exercise their responsibilities. A problem is that an adequate exercise of responsibility requires coordination within the blockchain. However, the system that normally takes care of coordination in a permissionless blockchain – the crypto-economic incentive system – is at present not able to provide adequate data protection
Application of coupled DEM-MBD simulation at the example of bucket elevators
The calculation of the scooping resistance of bucket elevators is based on empirically determined para-meters. The range of validity of the used mathematical expressions is limited to certain geometrical boundary conditions. A new simulation method for coupling ma-chine models (multi body dynamic simulation, MBD) with material models (discrete element method, DEM) was developed and validated using numerous tests. In this article the method of coupled DEM-MBD simulati-on is used to analyze the scooping resistance of vertical bucket elevators for different loading types and bulk solid properties
A Conversation Analytic Approach to Instant Messaging Service Encounters
New types of marks available after the European Union Trade Mark Reform An Analysis in the light of the U.S. Trade mark law
This article analyzes one of the novelties brought about by the European Union trade mark reform; i.e. the removal of the graphic representation requirement opening opportunities to register new types of marks at the European Union Intellectual Property Office. In this article, the legal requirements for the registration of the non-traditional trade marks under the legal frameworks of the European Union and the United States of America are discussed and the new provisions of the European Union trade mark law on the representation of trade marks are assessed
