Splenic Epithelial Cyst with Elevated Ca 19-9 Levels
Primary epithelial cysts of the spleen are very rare entities. Few cases have been reported in literature till date. We report a 19 years old female who presented to us with a large epithelial cyst of the spleen and elevated CA 19-9 levels
Getting the most from a surname study:\ud semantics, DNA and computer modelling\ud (third edition)
We here address such questions as: what does a surname\ud
mean;is it single origin;and, why do some surnames grow abnormally large? Though most surnames are rare, most people have populous surnames. In this article, we consider in particular the evidence that some frequent surnames could be completely or nearly single origin; this would imply that the whole surname relates to a single family\ud
that has grown abnormally large. Some populous surnames\ud
have a geographical distribution that might be thought to be consistent with a single origin. As yet, such supposition generally lacks support from adequate DNA evidence.\ud
\ud
Guided by the empirical evidence, our computer simulations identify various possible reasons for a surname family’s unusually prolific growth. In particular, chance is a main factor. Also, overall population growth conditions vary widely between different counties. This can go a long way towards explaining the large population of Plant, which is apparently the second largest single-family contender in the favourable growing conditions of Staffordshire. This\ud
surname shows relatively little evidence of a significant living population that stems from origins other than that of its dominant family. The initial semblance that Sykes could be the second largest single-family contender in West\ud
Yorkshire is more open to debate, since there might be more\ud
substantial other origins. To explain its dominant family, it seems necessary to invoke some exceptional characteristics such as more favourable growth factors for its homeland than those pertaining in the available data for the whole county. Also, for the computer modelling, we consider the effects of additional factors such as polygyny, resilience to plague,Y-chromosome linked fecundity, or an early start to an hereditary surname. Such factors can be beneficial in seeing a family through initial precarious times, sustaining its survival through to\ud
a small but real chance of subsequent proliferation in more favourable Industrial Age growth conditions
Colorectal Cancer Profile in a Tertiary Care Centre, Bangalore, India
Introduction: Colorectal cancers are a common disease of oncological practice. A raising incidence is seen in Asian population. It is one of the cancers where screening and early diagnosis are possible. Very few articles are there about the cancer scenario in India. A study of the disease profile helps in screening, early diagnosis and management of the disease in developing countries. Aim: To study the cancer presentation in our population which can help in developing strategies for better control of disease. Material and Methods: Medical records of 171 patients registered at Kidwai Hospital from 2010 to 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Data including age at presentation, sex, location of the cancer and stage at presentation were analyzed. Results: The male to female ratio was 1.26:1 in rectal cancer. In colon cancer the ratio was 1:1.3. The mean age at presentation was 47 years in males and 51 years in females in colorectal cancers together. Thirty eight percent of the patients were less than 45 years old. Eighty percent of the cases were rectal cancers. In 71% of rectal cancers the growth was located within 5cm from anal verge (AV). Stage III was the commonest stage of presentation. Abdominoperineal resection (APR) was the commonest surgical procedure done. Inoperability was highest with lower rectal cancer. Conclusion: Younger age at presentation, low lying rectal cancers and advanced stage at presentation were observed in our study group which includes predominantly rural population. Rectal cancers are the most common cancers referred among colorectal cancers. Screening for colorectal cancers and early evaluation of symptomatic cases need to be encouraged. Patients should be educated regarding this. Screening strategies, etiopathogenesis and genetic abnormalities in colorectal cancer patients need to be defined in developing countries
Umbilical Metastasis as the Manifestation of an Asymptomatic Gallbladder Carcinoma
Sister Mary Joseph's nodule (SMJN) is an eponym used to describe the metastatic lesion of the umbilicus. Umbilical metastases are rare and its occurrence as a first manifestation of an asymptomatic primary malignancy is very rare. The gallbladder is the source of SMJN in 2%-3% of cases. SMJN can present in any one of the following ways; first manifestation of an occult primary malignancy, an indication of recurrence in a patient with a previous malignancy, or as progression of an underlying symptomatic primary disease. Our study emphasizes the importance of identifying this very useful and easily applicable clinical sign by careful physical examination of the abdomen, and also the need for proper clinical evaluation of any umbilical lesion, and the histological diagnosis. In the present study we report on a case of Sister Mary Joseph's Nodule as the presentation of an asymptomatic gallbladder carcinoma, and review the relevant literature
A Recurrent Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of Cuboid Bone with Soft Tissue
Aneursymal bone cyst of cuboid is a rare benign tumor and at times it can be aggressive. Here we would like to report a case of recurrent ABC of cuboid with soft tissue involvement managed by resection reverse sural artery island flap and fibula graft. Only 3 cases of ABC cuboid were reported in the literature till date
Automatic Extraction of Protein Interaction in Literature
Protein-protein interaction extraction is the key precondition of the construction of protein knowledge network, and it is very important for the research in the biomedicine. This paper extracted directional protein-protein interaction from the biological text, using the SVM-based method. Experiments were evaluated on the LLL05 corpus with good results. The results show that dependency features are import for the protein-protein interaction extraction and features related to the interaction word are effective for the interaction direction judgment. At last, we analyzed the effects of different features and planed for the next step
Abilità linguistiche, extralinguistiche e paralinguistiche in pazienti con lesioni focali all’emisfero destro
Anatomical Variations in the Arteries and Nerves of the Right Carotid Triangle
Variations of the arteries and nerves are of clinical importance to the clinicians and surgeons in performing the surgeries. During the routine dissection for the undergraduates, variation in the branches of external carotid artery was noted in the right carotid triangle. The superior thyroid artery showed an upward loop from its origin and had a highly tortuous course, the lingual and facial arteries arouse from a common linguo-facial trunk and the ascending pharyngeal artery took origin from the Internal carotid artery. The ansa cervicalis showed absence of inferior root. The second and third cervical spinal nerves joined the superior root separately
Mirror neuron activity is no proof for action understanding.
We focus on the thesis that action understanding is a function of the mirror neuron system. According to our opinion, understanding is a process that runs through hermeneutic circles from the “Vorverständnis” (“previous understanding”) to steps of deeper understanding. Our critique relates to the narrow neuroscientific definition of action understanding as the capacity to recognize several movements as belonging to one action. After a reconstruction of the model's developments, we will challenge the claims of the model by Rizzolatti and Sinigaglia (2010). By analyzing the relation between the experimental results and its interpretation, we will conclude that there is no proof that mirror neuron activity leads to action understanding
Influences of mood on academic course evaluations
In two subsequent experiments, the influence of mood on academic course evaluation is examined. By means of facial feedback, either a positive or a negative mood was induced while students were completing a course evaluation questionnaire during lectures. Results from both studies reveal that a positive mood leads to better ratings of different dimensions of lecture quality. While in Study 1 (N=109) mood was not directly controlled, Study 2 (N=64) replicates the findings of the prior study and reveals direct influences of positive and negative mood on academic course evaluation
