Demographic and Socio-economic Determinants of Birth Interval Dynamics in Manipur: A Survival Analysis

    No full text
The birth interval is a major determinant of levels of fertility in high fertility populations. A house-to-house survey of 1225 women in Manipur, a tiny state in North Eastern India was carried out to investigate birth interval patterns and its determinants. Using survival analysis, among the nine explanatory variables of interest, only three factors – infant mortality, Lactation and use of contraceptive devices have highly significant effect (P<0.01) on the duration of birth interval and only three factors – age at marriage of wife, parity and sex of child are found to be significant (P<0.05) on the duration variable

Thymoma with Myasthenia Gravis in Adolescent

    No full text
Thymomas are exceedingly rare in the first 20 years of life, Thymic lesions comprise approximately 2–3% of all pediatric mediastinal tumors and include thymic cysts, hyperplasia, carcinoma, and thymomas. Fewer than 30 cases in children have been described in the literature. Thymomas in adults are commonly associated with other diseases, the most frequent being myasthenia gravis. However, this association has been rarely reported in childhood. These tumors are typically aggressive, with poor outcomes. We report a case of thymoma associated with myasthenia gravis in a 16-year-old girl and review the literature

    Ganglioneuroma Always A Histopathological Diagnosis

    No full text
Neuroblastoma, ganglioneuroblastoma and ganglioneuroma arise from sympathetic tissue in the neck, posterior mediastinum, adrenal gland, retroperitoneum and pelvis Ganglioneuromas are commonly seen in childhood. They are highly differentiated benign tumors and are compatible with long-term disease free survival. Retroperitoneal localization is relatively frequent for these tumors. Due to its rarity and lack of specific radiological findings diagnosis is always postoperative. Here, we present a case of Retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma which was undiagnosed before surgery

    Craniopharyngioma - Transnasal Endoscopic Approach

    No full text
Craniopharyngiomas are slow growing tumours arising from remnants of the craniopharyngeal duct and occupy the sellar region. The patients may remain asymptomatic for long duration or present with headache or visual disturbances. Surgery is the mainstay of the treatment. Traditionally these tumours have been removed by neurosurgeons through the cranial approach but the advent of nasal endoscopes has opened new avenues for ENT surgeons to treat such patients. We hereby present a case of craniopharyngioma who was successfully treated by Trans-nasal Hypophysectomy

Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Endometrium with Extensive Icthyosis Uteri

    No full text
We report a rare case of squamous cell carcinoma of endometrium arising in icthyosis uteri in a 60 years old lady presenting with vaginal bleedin

Appendicocecal Fistula – A Rare Complication of Appendicitis

    No full text
Fistulisation of appendix to other organs or to the exterior through abdominal wall is a rare complication of appendicitis. We present one such rare case of appendicocecal fistula due to appendicitis in a patient initially managed conservatively for appendicular lum

Computing with space: a tangle formalism for chora and difference

    No full text
What is space computing, simulation, or understanding? Converging from several sources, this seems to be something more primitive than what is meant nowadays by computation, something that was along with us since antiquity (the word "choros", "chora", denotes "space" or "place" and is seemingly the most mysterious notion from Plato, described in Timaeus 48e - 53c) which has to do with cybernetics and with the understanding of the front end visual system. It may have some unexpected applications, also. \ud \ud Here, inspired by Bateson (see Supplementary Material), I explore from the mathematical side the point of view that there is no difference between the map and the territory, but instead the transformation of one into another can be understood by using a formalism of tangle diagrams

The common and uncommon cestodal infestation encountered in routine histopathological practice from a semi-urban population in south India and their public health importance.

    No full text
Parasites are encountered uncommonly in routine histopathologic practice. Among them, cestodes form a major bulk. Cysticercosis heads the list forming the bulk of cases followed by Hydatidosis and Sparganosis. Microscopic identification of inflammation with surrounding reactions along with other morphological features forms the mainstay of diagnosis of parasitic diseases on histopathology. Identification of the parasites on histopathological examination would reduce the cost-diagnosis ratio avoiding expensive serological investigation

    Tamsulosin turn a round

    No full text
Tamsulosin is a sulfamoylphen-ethylamine derivative, a potent and a selective antagonist of Alpha-1A adrenoceptor. Its approved in the treatment of LUTS in BPH disease, being a specific Alpha -1A blocker it does not interfere much with the cardiovascular system. Though an age old molecule but still its a friendly drug to most of the physicians. Even the recent studies found its as efficacious to some of the newer molecules in the group

Comparative evaluation of the effect of statin drugs in Hyperlipidaemic patients

    No full text
Background: Statins clearly confer substantial benefit in people with established cardiovascular (CV) disease (secondary prevention). The effectiveness of various statin drugs in hyperlipidaemic patients is evaluated in the present study. Aim: This work was undertaken to assess the effective role of statin in hyperlipidaemic patients with cardiovascular disease and comparison was made between various classes of statin drugs. Settings and Design: The study population contained 50 subjects with hyperlipidaemia and they were administered with statin class of drugs. Results: The administration of Rosuvastatin and Atrovastatin was found to be more effective in the treatment of hyperlipidaemic patients than that of Simvastatin and Pravastatin. Although flavostatin also had a profound effect, the dosage was high compared to other statins. Hence its effectiveness compared to Rosuvastatin and Atrovastatin need to be further investigated. Conclusions: Rosuvastatin and Atrovastatin can be more effective in reducing hyperlipidemia compared to other classes of statin drugs and thus further reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in such patients. In addition to that,Rosuvasatin had less side effects in patients as compared to atrovastatin and can be defined as the most effective among the statin class of drugs
