Assessment tool addresses implementation challenges of ecosystem-based management principles in marine spatial planning processes

    No full text
Ecosystem-based marine spatial planning is an approach to managing maritime activities while ensuring human well-being and biodiversity conservation as key pillars for sustainable development. Here, we use a comprehensive literature review and a co-development process with experts to build an assessment framework and tool that integrates the fundamental principles of an ecosystem approach to management and translates them into specific actions to be undertaken during planning processes. We illustrate the potential of this tool through the evaluation of two national marine spatial plans (Spain and France), in consultation with the representatives involved in their development and implementation. To ensure more coherent future planning, socio-ecological system evolution in a climate change scenario and the future marine space needs of maritime sectors should be considered, as well as improving the governance structure and knowledge of ecosystem processes. This framework provides a consistent and transparent assessment method for practitioners and competent authorities

Collective post-traumatic growth: Validating and measuring positive change in the collective self among victims of sexual violence

    No full text
Across the world, women's personal responses to gender-based violence are increasingly political. In the current paper, we consider whether positive changes in the collective self, arising from personal experience of gender-based violence, which may lie at the heart of this phenomenon, can be evidenced. Four studies are reported that evidence and validate a proposed construct that reveals collective post-traumatic growth (PTG) among people who have experienced sexual violence. Confirmatory factor analyses, including a preregistered analysis, indicate that collective PTG is a multidimensional construct and is distinct, yet related to personal PTG. A longitudinal analysis offers evidence of stability and highlights the importance of collective efficacy and group solidarity in determining collective PTG over time. A final experimental study provides evidence of collective PTG determining people's emotional responses to reminders of their trauma. Taken together, these studies emphasize the significance of collective growth as an often overlooked, though positive and important, sociopolitical response to direct experiences of very personal trauma.</p

Am I more stressed because I'm aware of being a woman? The impact of gender identity salience on women's cardiovascular responses to stress

    No full text
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate how which social identity is salient affects physiological responses to stress in women. Specifically, we examined whether gender identity salience, compared to university student identity salience, would lead to significant differences in cardiovascular responses during a math stress task. Design: We conducted a between-subjects experiment, where participants were randomly assigned to either a gender identity salience condition or a university student identity salience condition. Methods: Ninety-six female participants completed the math stress task. Blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) and heart rate were measured to assess physiological responses to stress. Results: Women in the gender identity condition exhibited significantly higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure responses compared to those in the student identity condition. No significant differences in heart rate were observed between conditions. Conclusions: These findings suggest that gender identity salience amplifies physiological stress responses in women, providing insights into how group-related processes impact health outcomes. This study highlights the importance of considering identity salience in understanding women's cardiovascular response to stress.</p
