    Exploring MNEs’ inter-organizational knowledge transfer processes for enhancing innovation capability

    PurposeThis study investigates how multinational enterprises (MNEs) operating in emerging markets (EMs) acquire locally embedded knowledge and transfer it back to their headquarters (HQs) in developed economies.Design/methodology/approachWe adopt a qualitative case study approach, using the Gioia methodology, to examine knowledge flows within three MNEs operating in the Chinese market. Data were collected through 22 in-depth interviews with expatriates and their colleagues in both HQ and host units.FindingsOur findings highlight the value of emerging market knowledge for driving innovation for developed-economy MNEs and reveal eight sub-processes shaping expatriates’ knowledge acquisition (KA) and knowledge transfer (KT): (1) becoming acquainted with the host unit’s business environment, (2) identifying useful knowledge sources, (3) fostering relationships aimed at the development of friendships with external parties, (4) acquisition, (5) gaining senior (HQ) management support, (6) enhancing the absorptive capacity of HQs, (7) boundary spanning and (8) transferring knowledge. Additionally, we introduce renqing-based and face-based trust as novel dimensions of social capital theory, providing new insights into trust dynamics in emerging market contexts.Originality/valueThis study uncovers micro-level processes by which expatriates facilitate KA and KT from EMs to developed-economy HQ, addressing gaps in HQ-centric and emerging multinational enterprise-focused research. It advances social capital theory by introducing culturally nuanced trust dimensions and provides a more holistic, context-sensitive understanding of cross-border knowledge flows in coopetitive relationships, incorporating multi-actor perspectives

    Visual studies of Indian universities – A dataset This is a composite dataset of seven folders of 1,013 curated image files, selected from over five thousand photographed still-images, which were produced as research data for a wider project on marginality in the Indian academy. This composite dataset has been uploaded to the open science repository (‘Zenodo’) where a digital object identifier (DOI) has been registered. The sets have been embargoed for a period, to allow for related publications by the research team, following which they will be open access. The dataset also includes files on the fieldwork protocol, codebook, fieldnotes and a description of the project following FAIR principles of open science data management. Methodological notes This aspect of the project falls within visual university studies (VUS), a term coined by Dina Zoe Belluigi (the UK-based PI on the project) when analysing global research papers published since the Cold War, wherein VUS “encompasses a spectrum of orientations that take the visual as a central part of the focus, process or product in the study of the university or its citizens, including the visual as subject matter (such as public art or architecture; images archived and newly produced), the visual as method (such as participatory data creation, or photojournalism), and as methodology (such as creative arts research)” (Belluigi, 2025: 1048). Visual studies were found to provide “opportunity for raising questions about what is visibilised, invisibilised and envisioned within material and virtual representations”, by individuals, groups and institutions, “including image manufacture” that may be fallacious, aspirational or hoped-for (ibid). The approach enables critical analysis of pantemporal discourses through visual material. In this case, campus spaces of institutional sites were photographed. Prof Belluigi produced a protocol outlining preparations, guidance and thirteen spaces for image-capture. The protocol was informed by scholarship Belluigi [1] and Marjit [2] had undertaken, with invited input by the artist Brent Meistre. The protocol foregrounded the log book for fieldnotes of each site, completed by the researcher undertaking the image-capture. Ethical clearance was awarded by two institutional bodies: Queen’s University Belfast’s School of Social Science, Education and Social Work Research Ethics Committee (Ref No: 017_2324) and Jadavpur University’s Institutional Ethics Committee (Ref No: IEC/30/C/23). Seventeen institutional sites in six Indian states were selected for visual study. All were public higher education institutions. This included Assam, Dehli, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. For each site, attempts were made to access the thirteen spaces pre-identified as of value for visual study. There is variation in which of these sites were captured, in addition to variation in the number of final spaces captured. All images were captured with mobile phone cameras. Ethical conduct was observed, included securing permissions for access to sites from gatekeepers, where in many sites, the fieldworkers were accompanied by a site-specific gatekeeper. In addition, care was taken to avoid the capture of human person’s faces, and where such identifiers and those of institutions were captured, to obscure the identifiers while editing the images. During the project, the image files were sorted and uploaded to protected, encrypted online cloud storage. Images were sorted, and those with identifiers cleaned. Meta-data cleaning included the removal of location of site and exact date of capture to observe ethical conduct. The name of the fieldworker taking the image has been attributed as author, with year of data capture, keywords and copyright licence added. In accordance with observing ethical conduct, the file name has been altered to a code associated with the Indian state and site only.     Cordon sanitaire: an observation post at the Shankill Falls divide in Belfast

    This article investigates the monitoring of a “Peace Line” between the Falls and Shankill areas in Belfast in 1972. It considers how observation posts created what photographer Frankie Quinn has called a cordon sanitaire, resulting in social division. Observation posts used disciplinary techniques to manage the social conduct of large groups, and operated according to Michel Foucault’s principles of panopticism. State institutions could monitor populations through inspections and recording procedures. Considering surveillance from the perspective of military observers, entire regions could be appropriated by these spatial mechanisms, which codified territories and controlled movement. This paper critically questions assertions that hierarchical observation gave rise to panoptic discipline and conditioned the population into docile acquiescence. Rather, the cordon sanitaire provoked subversion and invisible resistance, prompting its re-conception as a postcolonial space.<br/

    Hybridisation primes population invasiveness under environmental change

The same species, not the same invader: Metabolic responses of genetically distinct invasive populations of Dikerogammarus villosus (Sowinsky, 1894) and their intraspecific hybrid to environmental stresses. Journal of Animal Ecology, in press. Biological invasions are a major global environmental change that has contributed to most anthropogenic extinction events while costing trillions. Invasiveness and impact assessments are often done at the species level; however, there is growing recognition that intraspecific population-level differences can be profound, especially in response to environmental gradients. Jermacz et al. (2025) employ a series of experiments to compare physiological responses between two populations of a high-impact invasive amphipod, the ‘killer shrimp’ Dikerogammarus villosus, under stresses associated with climate change. Moreover, they assess the performance of intraspecific hybrids between the populations, which are expected to converge in future along their separate invasion routes from the Ponto-Caspian region. The main finding in their study is that—alongside differences in physiological performance between the two populations—their intraspecific hybrids exhibit significant performance advantages under environmental stress. The increased genetic diversity and phenotypic capacity afforded through hybridisation between distinct invasive populations could be a mechanism that bolsters invasion success under climate change. These findings have implications for fundamentally understanding and practically managing invasive populations in changing environments.<br/

    Cultural and creative crowdfunding: how project categories shape adoption and success on Kickstarter

    This article contributes to the literature on cultural and creative crowdfunding (CCCF), illustrating the trends and dynamics of crowdfunding adoption amid cultural and creative industries (CCIs) from a longitudinal perspective. This paper explores the development of CCCF by examining all campaigns on Kickstarter from 2009 to 2020, taking into account the variations among CCIs, their respective success rates, and the amounts pledged. Using three different statistical tests, we find support for the hypotheses that there is an association between CCI campaign categories and campaign success, which varies over time. Our main findings reveal distinct dynamics with significant differences in the success rates and pledged amounts when treating the fifteen Kickstarter project categories as proxy for the different CCIs
