    Genome-wide association study of quantitative kidney function in 52,531 individuals with diabetes identifies five diabetes-specific loci

    BACKGROUND: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a serious diabetes complication caused by both environmental and genetic risk factors. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified several loci associated with kidney function and kidney disease in the general population and, to a lesser extent, in diabetes.METHODS: To uncover the genetic factors driving diabetes-induced kidney function, we conducted a series of GWAS meta-analyses of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in 17,267 individuals with type 1 diabetes and 35,264 with type 2 diabetes (52,531 total), utilizing multiple well characterized cohorts of type 1 diabetes DKD and data from the UK Biobank and SUMMIT Consortium. We further accounted for DKD case/control status, diabetes duration and subtype, body mass index, glycated hemoglobin levels, and the relationship between eGFR and albuminuria.RESULTS: GWAS identified 13 loci associated with eGFR (P&lt;5x10-8), with five loci (candidate genes: HIPK3, TRIM5, RORA, ERBB4, and BCL6/LPP) not associated or were in opposite directions as compared to eGFR in the general population. Four candidate genes (HIPK3, BCL6, LPP, and RORA) demonstrated evidence of differential expression in kidney compartments and cells among subgroups with DKD or diabetes versus controls. Lead SNPs rs8027829 (RORA) and rs76300256 (BCL6/LPP) were methylation quantitative trait loci in whole blood and kidney tissue, respectively, and rs76300256 and its related CpGs all cluster in a kidney enhancer.CONCLUSIONS: Our integrated approach identified candidate genes with diabetes-specific effects on kidney function.</p

    Lightweight AI based malware detection using opcode and system call analysis across IOT architectures

    The Internet of Things (IoT) is expanding rapidly across consumer, industrial, and infrastructure domains. As malware targeting these resource-constrained devices becomes increasingly sophisticated, new approaches to detection are re- quired. This paper presents a comparative study of three analysis techniques for IoT malware detection: static opcode analysis, dynamic opcode tracing, and dynamic system call analysis. Experiments were conducted across four widely used architectures, x86, ARM, MIPS, and MIPSEL, using code emulation. Feature vectors were generated from both static disassembly and runtime execution traces and evaluated using Random Forest classifiers. Results show that dynamic opcode analysis consistently outperforms static analysis across all architectures, achieving accuracy up to 100%. These findings demonstrate the potential for fast, lightweight, and architecture-aware malware detection systems suitable for real-world IoT deployments. This work presents the two novel contributions. First, the first dynamic opcode analysis of MIPS and MIPSEL platforms for malware detection. Second, the first comprehensive comparison of static opcode analysis, dynamic opcode tracing, and dynamic system call monitoring for IoT malware detection across multiple architectures, laying the groundwork for future research into cross platform detection techniques

    Cultural policy: perspectives on the island of Ireland

    Cultural Policy: Perspectives on the Island of Ireland draws together a wide range of academic perspectives and disciplines that relate to cultural policy in the context of the island of Ireland (Ireland and Northern Ireland). Through the study of the unique context of this intertwined two-polity island, the collection aims to further the examination of the “situated” nature of cultural policy amongst people and place. Contributions from media, European integration, festivals, arts and education, sustainable development, and cultural participation and work bring attention to, and open up, the interdisciplinary dialogue on cultural policy studies on, of, and for the island and beyond. By way of its particular environment, the collection also serves as a call for greater recognition and reflexivity in cultural policy studies regarding how people and place define what we think we know about cultural policy.This book will be of interest to local and international policy and cultural policy scholars as well as practitioners in policy, arts, culture, and creativity. The collection situates a range of industries, practices, and sectors in shared, local, complex, and international contexts and frames, revealing the multi-level operation of policy governances from the domestic to the global. The findings from the specific context of the island of Ireland thus have relevance for other nation-states and regions with similar intertwined jurisdictions and resulting tensions. More generally, this body of multi- and interdisciplinary academic research on and of Ireland deepens our understanding of locally situated, but globally connected, cross-border and transnational cultural policy studies

    Toward inclusive green human resource management: an identity-based analytical framework

    The concept of green human resource management (HRM) has evolved significantly over the past decades, transitioning from isolated organizational practices to an integral part of strategic HRM systems aimed at environmental sustainability. However, despite the proliferation of green initiatives, employees often feel excluded from these efforts, as firms struggle to embed these practices across all levels of the workforce. We address this inclusivity gap by introducing an identity-based analytical framework for green HRM. By recognizing and integrating multiple social identities, such as self-identity, social identity, and nature-related identity, this framework provides a structured approach to understanding and enhancing inclusive green HRM practices. It highlights key mechanisms, including changing stereotypes, facilitating identity verification and identity complementarity, and building toward the common good. Recognizing the complexities of various diversity dimensions and their intersections, the paper offers a roadmap for organizations to tailor their green HRM practices effectively. Ultimately, this approach bridges the gap between green HRM scholarship and practical implementation, challenging existing limitations in GHRM practices and advancing an inclusive approach to embedding sustainability in the workplace.<br/

    Role of Fusobacterium nucleatum in the pathogenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma: a systematic review of molecular mechanisms and signalling pathways

    ObjectivesTo evaluate the mechanisms and signalling pathways involved in the pathogenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) that are promoted by Fusobacterium nucleatum infection across human participant, in vivo and in vitro studies.DesignThis systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines to address the question: What mechanisms and potential signalling pathways are implicated in the pathogenesis of OSCC facilitated by F. nucleatum infection, compared with non-infected controls? Searches were performed across three electronic databases: Scopus, Web of Science, and MEDLINE.ResultsSixty-three studies met the inclusion criteria for the systematic review. Studies involving human participants revealed alterations in bacterial genes related to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) synthesis, bacterial mobility and flagellar assembly. Additionally, alteration in host genes including DNA repair, tumour protein P53 (TP53), toll-like receptors and proinflammatory genes such as interleukin (IL)1β, IL8, and IL6 were reported. In vivo studies reported upregulation of cyclin D1 and IL6 following F. nucleatum infection. In vitro studies demonstrated changes in epithelial-mesenchymal transition markers such as E-cadherin, N-cadherin, vimentin, and zinc finger E-box binding homeobox (ZEB)1/2, along with increased expression of inflammatory markers, including IL-8 and IL-6 following F. nucleatum infection.ConclusionThe findings from this systematic review highlight a significant molecular response to F. nucleatum infection in oral cancer. The results underscore the complex interaction between F. nucleatum and host molecular pathways, offering valuable insights into how this bacterium may contribute to oral cancer development and progression
