The Awakening of W.E.B. Du Bois

keywords: primacy of black feeling, verstehen Sociology, double consciousness, race abstract:  This is an interpretive article that concentrates on the early W.E.B. Du Bois who shaped the wider world\u27s understanding of the Black experience in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Under the intellectual compression of learning and scholarship at the highest level, an awakening Du Bois developed ideas evolved in his youth and early maturity about the primacy of African American "feeling" and its importance in rejuvenating the American personality as well as the regeneration of Africa.  Influenced by William James\u27s pragmatism and interest in the paranormal as well as the verstehen method of Sociology learned in Germany, Du Bois sought a humanistic perspective by extending the frontiers of art, culture and spiritual values to fulfill a vision of the Africana great-souled person.  As prelude to The Souls of Black People, Du Bois undertook his scholarship from the inside-out.  Instead of positing the so-called "Negro Problem" as a problem to be solved in the style of academic Philosophy or statistical Sociology, Du Bois took the point of view of one who lived the strain and stresses afflicting African Americans, sharing their hopes and failures in the search for recognition and respect thereby introducing an alternative to traditional definitions of thought and reality.

Towards a Roadmap for Exploring Texas German Voices

    No full text
Our interdisciplinary article provides an overview of the breadth and variety of primary sources available to scholars studying Texas German history, culture, and language. We seek to (re)open an interdisciplinary dialogue and inspire future research. As we explore how linguists and historians can fruitfully work together, we take Texas German-Indigenous relations as our case study, showcasing the evolving use and associations of the term Indianer. A special emphasis is placed on the dynamics of (inter)generational ethnic memory formation around the (passed down) story of the kidnapping and return of Herman Lehmann in the 1870s.

The American Black Press and Late Imperial Russia

In early western accounts, Russia was distinctly oppressive, a state characterized by tyranny, barbarism, and Mongolian influence. But these accounts were faulty. They were written by merchants, diplomats, and explorers, wealthy white men who had never experienced the repression they witnessed in Russia. When Black Americans looked to Russia, however, they saw a place fundamentally similar to the United States. By tracing the coverage of Russia in the American Black press from 1827 to 1917, this paper argues that the connections between slavery and serfdom drove Black attitudes toward late Imperial Russia, making Black accounts reflective of circumstances in the United States, Russia, and the Black press itself.
