    Understanding College Athlete Mental Health: Insights from Division I Athletic Department Personnel

    Throughout contemporary society, mental health and well-being are viewed as critical components of holistic, biopsychosocial development. This perspective has gained momentum within the context of sport, as athletes utilize their social platform to advocate for mental health resources and supports. However, the diverse and dynamic needs of many athletes remain unmet. Within the current study, six focus groups—which included 27 partners of collegiate athletics—were conducted and included athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, as well as athletic administrators and academic counselors. Using a reflexive thematic analysis, findings indicated that college athlete mental health is understood as holistic well-being and the ability to thrive in daily life. Participants discussed learning about mental health through academic education and training, as well as lived experiences (e.g., dual pandemic). Finally, participants believed more athletes are talking about mental health and that athletes feel most comfortable discussing mental health with their teammates and friends, the team’s sport staff (e.g., athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, assistant coaches), and mental health professionals.     Long-term decline and homogenization of an avian community surpasses effects on bird diversity caused by a single extreme flood event

    Protected areas are key elements in conservation. However, baseline data for these areas is often missing making estimation of biodiversity trends and effectiveness of management difficult to assess. Moreover, severe weather events that are intensified by climate change might heavily affect protected areas. Herein, we analyse breeding bird surveys from a small-scale protected area, the mouth of the river Ahr in western Germany. The area was stroked by a catastrophic flood event in the year 2021. We perform a before-after study spanning 38 years using breeding bird data from the yeas 1984, 2020 and 2022. Our results show only minor effects caused by the flood event. In contrast, long term data show an increase of species tight to woody vegetation while open habitat birds, among them more specialist species, often decreased. Hence, the protected area does only partially fulfil its purpose and important gaps are identified. Finally, we conclude that the results of our case study might well be exemplary for many insufficiently managed special protected areas and recommend more effective conservation efforts.

    An unexpected opportunity to video record an attempted natural habitat predation of an adult Thamnophis sirtalis by a subadult Coluber constrictor allowed detailed examination of predator and defensive strategies of both snakes. Slow playback of the recording, with occasional frame-by-frame viewing, clearly showed the entirely visual hunting mechanism of C. constrictor. It also showed the detailed and unmistakable cognition and intentionality employed by the T. sirtalis to repeatedly evade and misdirect the vision-based attack of the C. constrictor. Our observations, along with the openly available archived video, add to the growing body of knowledge on snake cognition and intentionality in natural habitats
