Measures to improve the treatment effect of oral appliance therapy in obstructive sleep apnea patients
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a recognized sleep disorder linked to significant health risks if left untreated. Oral appliance (OA) therapy is recognized as the second line treatment option for OSA and is especially relevant for patients who are nonadherent to therapy with positive airway pressure (PAP). Although widely used, the effectiveness of OA therapy varies, highlighting the need for improved strategies to enhance treatment outcomes. This thesis aims to identify strategies to enhance the effectiveness of OA therapy, focusing on clinically applicable measures and the identification of variables to predict non-responders.
The thesis is based on three studies: (1) a retrospective cohort study assessing the use of acoustic pharyngometry (AP) to identify optimal mandibular positioning in OA therapy (Paper 1), (2) a randomized crossover trial evaluating the application of elastic bands to bibloc OAs (Paper 2) and (3) a prospective cohort study examining predictors of non-response to OA therapy (Paper 3).
Paper 1 demonstrated high overall success rates using an AP protocol to individualize mandibular positioning in OA treatment. Paper 2 demonstrated that elastic bands improved treatment success rates, particularly in men with large maximum mouth openings. However, their lower patient preference underscores the importance of selective application to optimize outcomes. Paper 3 identified several potential predictors of non-response to OA treatment, including the endotypical traits of severe collapsibility, high loop gain, and low arousal threshold, as well as a smaller distance from habitual occlusion to retruded position and the absence of positional OSA.
The findings suggest that individualized OA positioning can improve overall treatment success, while the use of elastic bands may enable effective treatment for selected patients who would otherwise be non-responders. Additionally, identifying predictive variables for treatment response is essential for advancing precision medicine in OSA management with oral appliances.Doktorgradsavhandlin
Sedimentological Characterization and Interpretation of Tidal Deposits: A Comparative Study of Subsurface and Outcrop Data from the Garn Formation and the Sego Sandstone
Tidal deposits are important subsurface reservoirs that may host significant hydrocarbons accumulations and provide opportunities for CO2 storage. These reservoirs are often highly complex, exhibiting significant heterogeneity at both the inter- and intra-sandbody scale, which can complicate fluid movement and lead to poor reservoir drainage. Their complexity makes them difficult to characterize, interpret, and predict. As a result, the connectivity and variability of many tidal deposits remain less understood than those of other depositional systems. This thesis presents a characterization, interpretation and comparative study of tidally influenced deposits from subsurface cores of the Garn Formation in the Maria Field, Norwegian Sea, and outcrops of the Sego Sandstone in the Book Cliffs, Utah, USA. By integration of sedimentological logging, facies analysis, and architectural interpretation, the suitability of the Sego Sandstone as a field analogue for the Garn Formation will be assessed. While the Sego Sandstone has been extensively studied, its depositional environment remains debated. Similarly, the Garn Formation is well-documented, but data specific to the Maria Field is limited. Results show that while both formations exhibit similar depositional elements, and some comparable vertical trends, the overall depositional environment has been interpreted differently. The Garn Formation has been interpreted to consist of tidal sand ridges and inter-ridge swales deposited in a tidally influenced shelf setting, with stacking patterns that shows no clear parasequences. In contrast, analysis of the Sego Sandstone suggest deposition in a regressive tidal-deltaic system, characterized by lower shoreface deposits overlain by alternating tidal bars and interbars, occasionally incised by channels. Key differences challenge the direct applicability of the Sego Sandstone as a field analogue for the Garn Formation. This study advances the understanding of tidal systems and provides valuable insights for reservoir geologists by improving recognition of sedimentary structures, stacking patterns, and facies transitions diagnostic of tidal processes. It also highlights the need for further research on outcrop analogues to better constrain the internal architecture and heterogeneity of tidal bar and ridge systems, contributing to improve subsurface depositional models and reservoir predictions.Masteroppgave i geovitenskapGEOV399MAMN-GEO
Profiling the stable isotope signature of water vapour from kinetic fractionation in Arctic conditions
With the current rate of Arctic sea-ice decline, the Arctic is anticipated to experience an ice-free summer before the end of the century, with unprecedented disturbances expected to the local Arctic water cycle. These disturbances can extend beyond the confines of the High Arctic and influence weather patterns in the Eurasian and North American mid-latitudes, via the equatorward transport of heat and moisture. Numerical weather models struggle to accurately recreate these events in the water cycle, as the processes occurring during the moisture export can only be approximated. The signal embedded in the stable water isotopic composition of this moisture could be utilised to identify compensating errors in the numerical model, as it provides an integrated measure of the history of preceding phase changes. However, a comprehensive, process-based understanding of how near-surface exchanges generate or modify this signal in Arctic conditions remains elusive, with the current understanding being mostly based on observations taken at vertical scales much larger than the processes themselves.
This thesis represents a cumulative effort to refine our understanding of how water isotopic signatures are transformed during these processes. Achieving this necessitated the development and utilisation of innovative observational methodologies, with a fundamental focus on connecting the isotopic composition of water vapour across vertical scales.
In Paper I, we present a novel and pragmatic system for measuring the vertical distribution of stable water isotopes in the first few meters above the surface. The system utilises a height-adjustable inlet connected to a cavity ring-down spectrometer to produce near-surface profiles of water vapour isotopic composition. We assess the impact that the harsh deployment environment might have had on the spectrometer, finding the effects minimal compared to more conventional deployments in a field observatory.
We detail our Arctic field campaign, ISLAS2020, in Paper II. This campaign involved multiple deployments of the profiling system outlined in Paper I, one over snow-covered tundra and the other over open fjord water. The description includes the isotopic composition of discrete snow/liquid samples taken from profiling surfaces. We also describe the instrumentation installed at both profiling deployment sites, including fibre-optic distributed temperature sensing columns, providing high-resolution, continuous temperature profiles alongside our isotopic profiles. All results from the field campaign are made publicly available at a curated, open-access data repository.
Paper III compares the stable water isotope profiles from Paper II with established theoretical models and previous laboratory experimentation. We find that the isotopic signatures observed at our experimental sites correspond with modelled values, with evaporation in the cold, dry Arctic conditions resulting in large, positive deuterium excess values. Additionally, our exceptionally negative deuterium excess measurements in vapour, observed during super-saturated deposition of vapour onto the underlying snowpack, can be simulated using a finite reservoir distillation model that accounts for non-equilibrium fractionation effects.
Paper IV describes a water vapour generation device used for correcting stable water isotope observations for humidity-dependent offsets that vary across isotopic values. Possessing two dispensing heads with nanolitre dispensing precision, the device allows for the precise mixing of two reference standards. Therefore, the device can automatically iterate through possible mixing combinations in the isotope-humidity space between the two standards, resulting in a characterisation surface specific to a given laser spectrometer. This characterisation surface is applied as a part of the post-processing of the low humidity observations collected during our Arctic field measurements, as outlined in Paper II.
We introduce ultralight aircraft as platforms for collecting in-situ vertical profiles of stable water isotopes in Paper V. Observations with these aircraft have the potential to connect the water isotopic composition across most of the atmospheric column, from a few meters above surface to mid-troposphere. These profiles have the added benefit as acting as "ground-truthing" for space-bourne remote sensing of stable water isotopes, which would ultimately improve data coverage in data-sparse regions.Doktorgradsavhandlin
Analysen anvender forskjell-i – forskjell forskningsdesign.
A CFD Investigation of Pressure-Driven Hydrogen Leakage and Flow Regimes
This thesis investigates the behavior of hydrogen leakage and flow properties through a combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and theoretical methods. Hydrogen has the potential to provide promising solutions in the energy sector. However, due to its chemical and physical properties, fully integrating it into the existing energy infrastructure presents challenges. Therefore, gaining a more comprehensive view of certain aspects of hydrogen flow should be of interest.
Using the commercial CFD software STAR-CCM+, the leakage rate of hydrogen was assessed and compared to that of two other gases: methane and nitrogen. The simulations modeled fully pressure-driven leakages, analyzing flow from a chamber with a specified initial pressure. This was done under both low and high initial pressures, which also served as a comparison between subsonic and supersonic flow. The results revealed an inversely proportional relationship between the molar leakage rate and the density of the gas in question, which compared favorably with the theoretical Darcy-Weisbach equation. In these leakage scenarios, the hydrogen flow, unlike the two other gases, also led to the formation of a high-density wavefront.
Additional simulations were conducted to compare the effects of slip- or no-slip boundary conditions on the flow rate at various pressure levels and pipe diameters. Slip and no-slip boundary conditions refer to whether a fluid "slips" along a solid wall or if the fluid wall velocity is zero along the wall. In alignment with the theory, the slip effects became more significant as the pressure and diameter decreased. Furthermore, a theoretical model was derived to estimate mass flow in the slip regime. The results from the simulations and the derived model were compared, with the model displaying a smaller relative difference between slip- and no-slip flow. A sensitivity analysis and dimensional analysis were conducted to examine the derived model further and evaluate its robustness and applicability.
Finally, the Riemann problem—a theoretical initial value problem that models the behavior of shock waves—was solved to validate the simulation results. It provided exact solutions to specific physical parameters of hydrogen shock waves. Comparing the theoretical solution of the Riemann problem to the equivalent scenario in STAR-CCM+ verified the accuracy of previous simulations and validated the solver models used throughout the thesis.Masteroppgave i energiENERGI399I5MAMN-ENE
Care, Control and Calories: A Genealogy of Measuring International Undernutrition
This article documents the historical development of the calory and its application in international measurement of undernutrition. It provides an empirical account of the origins of caloric measurement as a scientific instrument, its uptake into international statistics on undernutrition produced by the League of Nations and the United Nations, and eventual use in monitoring global development goals. The historical analysis explores and discusses how a dialectic of care and control is embedded in macrosocial measurement of hunger: Caloric statistics have served as a condition of possibility for states and international agencies to render food systems governable through constituting a novel form of legibility that pushed the frontiers for modern schemes of top-down intervention and control. Such measurements have furthermore served as a vital resource to legitimize and justify the ambitions of the UN and modern development agenda, serving to establish and shape grand narratives of humanity’s progress under different food regimes. Based on this historical analysis, the article provides a normative and epistemic argument for centring the perspectives and knowledges of those affected by hunger in the enumeration of nutrition and food security. Such democratic agency should however not just be an object of measurement but be leveraged through participatory methodologies that draw upon the voices of the food insecure to better capture the multidimensional nature of food security through numbers.publishedVersio

This master’s thesis explores how cooperative learning can promote increased oral activity in the Norwegian language subject at the lower secondary level. The main research question addressed is: How can cooperative learning contribute to increased oral participation in the Norwegian subject? To answer this, two research questions have been formulated:
1. In what way can the teacher's facilitation and systematic use of oral collaborative assignments strengthen the individual student's oracy?
2. What do the students themselves think about collaborative learning as a method to increase oral activity related to academic conversations in the classroom?
The study also investigates how collaborative learning can be a method for facilitating oral activity and how this affects students' oracy.
The thesis is grounded in sociocultural learning theory, particularly inspired by perspectives from Vygotsky and Bakthin, emphasizing that learning occurs in social and dialogic contexts. Through various cooperative learning tasks in the classroom — such as “expert carousel” and “quiz and swap”— students were encouraged to use language actively in collaboration with peers. The analysis indicates that systematic use of cooperative tasks enhances students’ sense of safety, academic engagement, and ability to participate orally.
Findings suggest that cooperative learning can contribute to a more inclusive and dialogic classroom where more students feel confident speaking and develop stronger oral competencies. The study highlights the teacher’s role as a facilitator and supporter, and the importance of creating a safe learning environment for oral participation. This research has practical relevance and offers concrete examples of how oral skills in the Norwegian subject can be systematically supported through cooperative learning.Erfaringsbasert masteroppgave i undervisning med fordypning i norskNORMAU65
Can It Go On Like This?
This thesis explores how farmers in Vestlandet, Norway, experience and respond to structural changes in Norwegian agriculture. Through qualitative interviews with farmers in the region, the study examines how values, practices, and strategies emerge in response to various stressors and uncertainties, such as economic pressure, conflicting demands, social expectations, and ongoing structural changes in the agricultural sector. Drawing on theories of resilience – and inspired by Donna Haraway’s invitation to “stay with the trouble” - the analysis investigates how farmers navigate the tensions between ideals of sustainability and the lived realities of modern farming. Resilience is thus not treated as a neutral capacity to endure, but as a question of what is being sustained - and for whom. The analysis uncovers diverse and overlapping expressions of resilience, ranging from adaptive responses to changing conditions, to relational practices grounded in care and mutual adjustment with animals, land, and self. Haraway’s concept of oddkin offers a lens to understand farming as a multispecies, ethical practice rather than mere production for survival. In a time of climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and economic uncertainty, such care-based resilience appears both vulnerable and vital. It points toward sustainability not as a ‘technical fix’, but as the cultivation of relations that make farming liveable - together.Praksisbasert masteroppgaveSDG351MAHF-SD
«One thing is functional variations, but first of all, they’re children!» A reflexive evaluation and implementation study of music therapy’s role in an interdisciplinary intensive habilitation process for children with multifunction variations
This master’s thesis examines music therapy with children with multifunctional variations in the context of intensive habilitation (IH) at a hospital. Both individual and group-based sessions have been offered and conducted. Overall, the thesis addresses issues of implementation and evaluation and aims to gain more knowledge about how music therapy can be conducted and integrated in the interdisciplinary concept of IH. The research applies a quantitative interview-design including four parents of children having attended music therapy. The parents share their experiences about participating in IH, both with and without music therapy being a part of it. Next to data material from semi-structured interview with the parents, the researcher’s log is included in data-collection and reflexive thematic analysis. The findings indicate that music therapy can create a space for play, which in turn can lead to increased motivation and interest in the children, facilitation exploration and participation. Disability studies, communicative musicality and a psychosocial perspective inform the discussion of the findings. In conclusion, the music was not a negative part of the participates experience. The master’s thesis highlights the importance and relevance of music and play for children’s development and as part of interdisciplinary IH.Masteroppgave i musikkterapiMUTP350MAHF-INMU
