Machine learning for single-cell immune profiling in MS after stem cell transplantation
The goal of this thesis was to explore whether machine learning can be used to separate immune profiles from MS patients before and after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT), and from healthy individuals using single-cell mass cytometry data. I also compared a clustering-based pipeline with a clustering-free approach.
The clustering-based method grouped cells and used summary values for classification. It worked to some extent but didn’t capture enough detail to reliably separate the conditions. Models trained directly on individual cells performed better, especially a simple decision tree that used only a small number of markers. Even though neural networks like Deep Sets managed to fit the training data they didn’t generalize as well to new patients.
The final decision tree model achieved perfect accuracy on both validation and test patients. This suggests that a few key immune markers may be enough to detect treatment-related changes and that simple models can perform surprisingly well in this kind of setting even compared to more advanced neural networks.Masteroppgave i informatikkINF399MAMN-INFMAMN-PRO

Heating from the north: How ice and wind impact the transport of Atlantic-origin water from the Arctic Ocean to the Barents Sea
The northwestern Barents Sea is one of the fastest-changing environments in the Polar regions. It is influenced by Atlantic Water through several pathways. In this thesis, we examine the inflow of Atlantic-influenced water through one of these pathways: the Kvitøya Trough. A mooring array consisting of three moorings was deployed across the slope just downstream of Kvitøya Trough from November 2019 to November 2021. These moorings recorded hydrographic data as well as bottom pressure. The bottom pressure measurements, combined with altimetry data, were used to determine the absolute volume transport through Kvitøya Trough. We found that winter 2020-2021 was much warmer than winter 2019-2020. The transport was found to be driven by wind during periods without a sea ice lid. The decrease in sea ice cover in 2020 led to an increase in transport through Kvitøya Trough, resulting in a maximum southward transport of Sv in November 2020, sufficient to replace the volume of water in the northwestern Barents Sea. Stronger transport into the northwestern Barents Sea has not been previously observed through Kvitøya Trough or any of the other pathways.Masteroppgave i meteorologi og oseanografiGEOF399MAMN-GEO
Anticipatory grief and ecclesiastical heritage: The demolition of modernist churches in Finland
An increasing number of modernist churches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland which were built in the 1960s and 1970s are reaching a point in their life cycle where they require extensive renovations or demolition. As church membership is falling due to secularisation, an ageing population, and immigration, the financial resources to do extensive renovations are also diminishing. Hence more and more modernist churches are threatened by demolition. Despite their relatively young age, these churches have already become meaningful for and entwined with the lives of local communities, and their removal is felt as a loss of valuable heritage. This article discusses the reasons for demolition and analyses subsequent debates in the public media. While most media attention is directed to values defined by architects and heritage professionals, the emotional and autobiographical values of the locals are less appreciated. It is argued that heritage professionals could prepare for the demolitions by adopting the framework of anticipatory grief, which acknowledges and perhaps alleviates the loss felt by the stakeholders.publishedVersio
Exploration in Motion: A Qualitative Study of How the Concept of Exploration is Transformed from Disciplinary and Ideological Intentions to Teachers’ Understandings and Experiences in Mathematics 1T
This master's thesis explores how the concept of exploration (utforskning) is transformed across different levels of curriculum discourse: from didactic and ideological intentions, through curriculum documents, to teachers' understandings and experiences with implementation in the Norwegian mathematics subject 1T. The study is grounded in curriculum theory with a focus on perspectives on implementation, and is based on qualitative interviews with five teachers and one curriculum contributor. The analysis reveals that the concept of exploration is interpreted and realized differently across levels, and that tensions exist between overarching curricular visions and teachers’ practical needs. Findings show that in practice, exploration is often associated with specific classroom activities rather than with deeper learning processes, and that both external influences and professional interpretations shape its implementation. This study contributes insight into how curriculum concepts take shape in practice, and what conditions support – or hinder – the intention of fostering more exploratory mathematics teaching.Masteroppgave i matematikkdidatikkMAT699VID-MAUMA
Towards prediction of CML Treatment Outcomes with Machine Learning and CyTOF Data
Predicting responses to therapy for patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is crucial for optimizing treatment strategies. This study utilizes machine learning models with mass cytometry (CyTOF) data from samples taken before treatment, at 3 hours and 7 days post-treatment, to predict patient responses to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) at 6 and 18 months. By comparing the accuracy of various machine learning methods, the research aims to develop tailored treatment strategies for CML patients. The study also explores how well these models can be applied to new patients. A nested cross-validation strategy is employed to optimize and evaluate the models. Additionally, the models are analyzed to identify key biomarkers deemed important for predicting responses at different time points. The findings indicate that integrating machine learning with CyTOF data shows promise in enhancing predictive accuracy, which may help in making early-phase treatment decisions and improving patient outcomes in CML therapy. Furthermore, the study demonstrates promising results in predicting cell types using models trained on clustered CyTOF data, highlighting the potential for these models to accurately classify cell populations.Masteroppgave i informatikkINF399MAMN-PROGMAMN-IN
Self-care among milieu therapists in child welfare residential care institutions
The goal with this master’s thesis is to examine self-care among the employees working closest to the youths who live in child welfare residential care institutions – milieu therapists. Milieu therapists have an important and challenging job. They are set to help youth who experience major crises in their lives. Employees are exposed to physical and mental stress, and researchers have been concerned with such negative consequences of working in child welfare. Self-care has received increasing attention in the wake of this.
In using qualitative methods, I have interviewed five milieu therapists in public child welfare residential care institutions. I’ve explored what milieu therapists experience and perceive as important for self-care, what self-care entails for milieu therapists in child welfare institutions, and what are important prerequisites for milieu therapists’ self-care.
Findings suggests that several aspects are important for milieu therapists’ self-care. Considering both an individual oriented- and a relational oriented theory of well-being, as well as empowerment theory, I argue that self-care is a dynamic process. On the one hand it is a personal task where milieu therapists’ knowledge of themselves, their own needs, and boundaries, sets the framework for what self-care means to them. I also find that attitudes towards and awareness of the topic, as well as knowledge and experience, are important prerequisites for their self-care. On the other hand, my findings suggests that a fine and mutual interaction in milieu therapists’ relations with their colleagues and leaders, and structures around the milieu therapist, are important for milieu therapists’ self-care.Masteroppgave i BarnevernMABARN330MAPS-BAR
