UK Attitudes Towards Personal Data Stores and Control Over Personal Data, 2021
(1) To ascertain how the British public (adults) feel about personal data storage apps and services, and how in control over their personal data they feel, we conducted a UK-wide demographically representative national survey (implemented by survey company, ICM Unlimited, across 15-18 January 2021, 2,065 respondents, online omnibus). (2) To qualitatively assess UK adults' views on control over personal data, and perceptions of personal data storage apps and services, six two-hour focus groups (35 participants) were conducted in February 2021, split according to age (18-34 year olds in Groups A, D and E, and 65+ in Groups B, C and F). (3) To ascertain how the British public (adults) feel about being paid for supplying their biometric and emotion personal data in a controlled fashion via personal data storage apps and services, we conducted a UK-wide demographically representative national survey (implemented by survey company, Walnut Unlimited, across 29 Sep – 1 Oct 2021, 2,070 respondents, online omnibus)
Mapping the root systems of individual trees in a natural community using genotyping-by-sequencing
Summary: The architecture of root systems is an important driver of plant fitness, competition and ecosystem processes. However, the methodological difficulty of mapping roots hampers the study of these processes. Existing approaches to match individual plants to belowground samples are low throughput and species specific. Here, we developed a scalable sequencing‐based method to map the root systems of individual trees across multiple species. We successfully applied it to a tropical dry forest community in the Brazilian Caatinga containing 14 species. We sequenced all 42 individual shrubs and trees in a 14 × 14 m plot using double‐digest restriction site‐associated sequencing (ddRADseq). We identified species‐specific markers and individual‐specific haplotypes from the data. We matched these markers to the ddRADseq data from 100 mixed root samples from across the centre (10 × 10 m) of the plot at four different depths using a newly developed R package. We identified individual root samples for all species and all but one individual. There was a strong significant correlation between belowground and aboveground size measurements, and we also detected significant species‐level root‐depth preference for two species. The method is more scalable and less labour intensive than the current techniques and is broadly applicable to ecology, forestry and agricultural biology
Similar metabolic responses of co-occurring post-settlement mussels to temperature change despite distinct geographical distributions
For marine animals with biphasic life stages, different environmental conditions are experienced during ontogeny so that physiological constraints on early stages could explain adult distributions and life history traits. The invasive and cool-temperate adapted Mytilus galloprovincialis intertidal mussel approaches the eastern limit of its biogeographic distribution on the south coast of South Africa, where it shares a habitat with the warm-temperate adapted and indigenous Perna perna mussel. As adults, the two species exhibit different metabolic regulation capacities in response to temperature. We compared the acute metabolic response to temperature between species during the post-settlement recruit stage. Aerobic respiration rates of recently settled recruits were measured monthly for 5 months for temperatures 5 °C above or below the ambient field seawater temperature at the time of collection. Unlike adults, the capacity for aerobic metabolic regulation in response to temperature differed little between species under the conditions tested, indicating a similar degree of phenotypic or developmental plasticity in response to the thermal environment. In addition, monthly variations in metabolic patterns indicate unexpectedly high plasticity in response to recent seasonal thermal history for both species
Superiority and cost-effectiveness of monthly extended-release buprenorphine versus daily standard of care medication: a pragmatic, parallel-group, open-label, multicentre, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial
Daily methadone maintenance or buprenorphine treatment is the standard-of-care (SoC) medication for opioid use disorder (OUD). Subcutaneously injected, extended-release buprenorphine (BUP-XR) may be more effective-but there has been no superiority evaluation. This pragmatic, parallel-group, open-label, multi-centre, effectiveness superiority randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial was conducted at five National Health Service community-based treatment clinics in England and Scotland. Participants (adults aged ≥ 18 years; all meeting DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for moderate or severe OUD at admission to their current maintenance treatment episode) were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive continued daily SoC (liquid methadone (usual dose range: 60-120 mg) or sublingual/transmucosal buprenorphine (usual dose range: 8-24 mg) for 24 weeks; or monthly BUP-XR (Sublocade;® two injections of 300 mg, then four maintenance injections of 100 mg or 300 mg, with maintenance dose selected by response and preference) for 24 weeks. In the intent-to-treat population (senior statistician blinded to blinded to treatment group allocation), and with a seven-day grace period after randomisation, the primary endpoint was the count of days abstinent from non-medical opioids between days 8-168 (i.e., weeks 2-24; range: 0-161 days). Safety was reported for the intention-to- treat population. Adopting a broad societal perspective inclusive of criminal justice, NHS and personal social service costs, a trial-based cost-utility analysis estimated the Incremental Cost-effectiveness Ratio (ICER) per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) of BUP-XR versus SoC at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence threshold. The study was registered EudraCT (2018-004460-63) and ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05164549), and is completed. Between Aug 9, 2019 and Nov 2, 2021, 314 participants were randomly allocated to receive SoC (n = 156) or BUP-XR (n = 158). Participants were abstinent from opioids for an adjusted mean of 104.37 days (standard error [SE] 9.89; range: 0-161 days) in the SoC group and an adjusted mean of 123.43 days (SE 4.76; range: 24-161 days) in the BUP-XR group (adjusted incident rate ratio [IRR] 1.18, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.05-1.33; p-value 0.004). The incidence of any adverse event was higher in the BUP-XR group than the SoC group (128 [81.0%] of 158 participants versus 67 [42.9%] of 156 participants, respectively-most commonly rapidly-resolving (mild-moderate range) pain from drug administration in the BUP-XR group (121 [26.9%] of 450 adverse events). There were 11 serious adverse events (7.0%) in the 158 participants in the BUP-XR group, and 18 serious adverse events (11.5%) in the 156 participants in the SoC group-none judged to be related to study treatment. The BUP-XR treatment group had a mean incremental cost of £1033 (95% central range [CR] -1189 to 3225) and was associated with a mean incremental QALY of 0.02 (95% CR 0.00-0.05), and an ICER of £47,540 (0.37 probability of being cost-effective at the £30,000/QALY gained willingness-to-pay threshold). However, BUP-XR dominated the SoC among participants who were rated more severe at study baseline, and among participants in maintenance treatment for more that 28 days at study enrolment. Evaluated against the daily oral SoC, monthly BUP-XR is clinically superior, delivering greater abstinence from opioids, and with a comparable safety profile. BUP-XR was not cost-effective in a base case cost-utility analysis using the societal perspective, but it was more effective and less costly (dominant) among participants with more severe OUD, or those whose current treatment episode was longer than 28 days. Further trials are needed to evaluate if BUP-XR is associated with better clinical and health economic outcomes over the longer term. Indivior. Environmental and land use consequences of replacing milk and beef with plant-based alternatives
The consumption of meat and dairy products raise enormous environmental concerns. Circa 80% of global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the livestock industry originate from beef, milk and pork production. Changing the production and consumption of meat and dairy products is considered to offer an important contribution to achieving the Paris Agreement climate targets (UNFCCC, 2015), and could reduce the import of soybean meal to Europe from countries where it is linked with deforestation. However, individual diet substitutions may have indirect and unintended environmental consequences across interlinked livestock systems – hence a wider assessment of impacts of consumption changes is required using consequential life cycle assessment (LCA). In this study, we investigated the environmental consequences of two independent yet interconnected diet choices in a German context: (i) replacing dairy milk with soy milk, and; (ii) replacing beef meatballs with pea protein balls. We related commodity demand to detailed agricultural rotations and land use changes via farm scale economic modelling coupled with consequential LCA. The substitution of beef meatballs with pea-derived protein balls can result in GHG savings of 2.4 kg CO2e per 100 g serving, and up to 7.3 kg CO2e per 100 g serving if spared land is afforested. Environmental problems related to nutrient leakage such as acidification and eutrophication are also mitigated. Meanwhile, unless accompanied by dramatic reductions in beef consumption, the substitution of cow milk with soy-based milk does not lead to significant GHG mitigation owing to the displacement of dairy-beef production to less efficient suckler-beef systems. Nonetheless, land sparing by cow milk substitution could support overall GHG mitigation if combined with afforestation. This study confirms that legumes can play an important role in diet transitions towards climate neutrality, especially via substitution of meat (as opposed to dairy) products
Forecasting the chaotic dynamics of external cavity semiconductor lasers
Chaotic time series prediction has been paid intense attention in recent years due to its important applications. Herein, we present a single-node photonic reservoir computing approach to forecasting the chaotic behavior of external cavity semiconductor lasers using only observed data. In the reservoir, we employ a semiconductor laser with delay as the sole nonlinear physical node. By investigating the effect of the reservoir meta-parameters on the prediction performance, we numerically demonstrate that there exists an optimal meta-parameter space for forecasting optical-feedback-induced chaos. Simulation results demonstrate that using our method, the upcoming chaotic time series can be continuously predicted for a time period in excess of 2 ns with a normalized mean squared error lower than 0.1. This proposed method only utilizes simple nonlinear semiconductor lasers and thus offers a hardware-friendly approach for complex chaos prediction. In addition, this work may provide a roadmap for the meta-parameter selection of a delay-based photonic reservoir to obtain optimal prediction performance
Structural prediction during language comprehension revealed by electrophysiology: Evidence from Italian auxiliaries.
Prediction in language comprehension has become a key mechanism in recent psycholinguistic theory, with evidence from lexical prediction as a primary source. Less work has focused on whether comprehenders also make structural predictions above the lexical level. Previous research shows that processing is facilitated for syntactic structures which are predictable based on context; however, there is so far no direct evidence that speakers formulate structural predictions ahead of encountering input. We investigated whether subject noun animacy cues comprehenders to predict different verb phrase (VP) structures, with the incompatibility between a low animacy subject and an Agent interpretation of transitives/unergative VPs predicting a derived (passive/unaccusative) VP structure, using Italian auxiliaries. Native Italian speakers read sentences with subject nouns varying from high to low animacy followed by the auxiliary avereHAVE, which is compatible with underived VPs, or essereBE, which is compatible with derived VPs. The auxiliary avereHAVE elicited greater frontal negativity when preceded by a subject noun with lower animacy. The auxiliary essereBE elicited no differential ERP given subject animacy. We propose that this frontal negativity reflects violation of a structural prediction, with amplitude reflecting the strength of initial commitment or difficulty in revising a predicted structure. Differences between auxiliaries are proposed to follow from the more specific distribution of avereHAVE. We argue that this evidence unambiguously supports a predictive mechanism for phrase-level structure

This article discusses the 'causes' of the current energy crisis, how it affects the poor and the vulnerable in the UK, and proposes two solutions to help mitigate the problem
High-yield carbon derived from commercial phenol–formaldehyde resin for broadband microwave absorption by balancing conductivity and polarization loss
Lightweight and chemically stable carbon are widely applied as attractive microwave absorption materials (MAMs). However, the effective response bandwidth of pure carbonaceous MAMs is limited due to the imbalance between conductivity and polarization loss. Herein, carbon with a large number of amorphous/nanocrystalline uneven phase interfaces prepared from commercial phenol–formaldehyde resin (PF) through simple anoxic carbonization exhibited excellent microwave absorption performance by balancing conductivity and polarization loss. Benefiting from the modification of the carbon nanocrystalline, a suitable electrical conductivity is obtained with a large number of amorphous/nanocrystalline uneven phase interfaces, allowing more incident microwaves to be lost. Thus, PF-650 exhibits a strong reflection loss of − 59.62 dB and a broadband effective microwave absorption of 6.32 GHz at 2.35 mm. In contrast to typical carbonaceous MAMs with multiple chemical compositions and complicated microstructures, this work provides a promising approach to the preparation of highly efficient and yielding carbonaceous materials for practical applications
