Greenhouse gas and ammonia emission mitigation priorities for UK policy targets

    Get PDF
Agriculture plays a critical role in providing food and maintaining food security whist at the same time delivering multiple other ecosystem services and is essential for food production and food security. However, agricultural systems are generally a net source of greenhouse gases and ammonia They therefore need to play a crucial role in climate change mitigation and net zero ambitions. It is widely acknowledged that there is a need to further reduce and mitigate emissions across sectors, including agriculture to address the climate emergency and emissions gap. This discussion paper outlines a collation of opinions from a range of experts within agricultural research and advisory roles following a greenhouse gas and ammonia emission mitigation workshop held in the UK in March 2022. The meeting identified the top mitigation priorities within the UK’s agricultural sector to achieve reductions in greenhouse gases and ammonia that are compatible with policy targets. In addition, experts provided an overview of what they believe are the key knowledge gaps, future opportunities and co benefits to mitigation practices as well as indicating the potential barriers to uptake for mitigation scenarios discussed

A scoping review of community-based mental health intervention for children and adolescents in South Asia

Children and adolescents in South Asia are exposed to significant mental health risks. Yet, policy to prevent or treat youth mental health problems in this context is underdeveloped, and services are difficult to access. Community-based mental health treatment may offer a potential solution, by increasing resource capacity in deprived settings. However, little is known about the current community-based mental health provision for South Asian youth. A scoping review was conducted across six scientific databases and hand searching of reference lists to identify relevant studies. Study selection and data extraction were performed by three independent reviewers using predefined criteria, an adapted version of the template for intervention description and replication checklist and the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. The search identified 19 relevant studies published from January 2000 to March 2020. Studies most frequently addressed PTSD and autism, were conducted in India and Sri Lanka, used education-based intervention and were based in urban school settings. Community-based mental health provision for the South Asian youth is in its infancy, but holds promise for providing essential resources to treat or prevent mental health disorder. New insights on approaches are discussed, which are valuable for South Asian settings, primarily task-shifting and stigma reduction, with implications for policy, practice and research

    “a monstrously difficult subject”:Stanley Kubrick’s Aryan Papers (1991-1993)

Special issue of The Journal of Jewish Identities on the subject of the influence of the Holocaust on Jewish identities and conversely, the influence of Jewish identities on perceptions and interpretations of the Holocaust, co-edited by Phyllis Lassner and Victoria Aarons, forthcoming January 2023. The works of Stanley Kubrick, whether his photography, documentary or feature film, can be said to embody cultural expressions of Jewish Identities, the Holocaust and World War II. While Kubrick long sought to make a film about World War II and the Holocaust, he never succeeded. Nevertheless, allusions can be found in his work, both direct and indirect, in both the projects he completed and those he only planned but never realised. By exploiting the new research into Kubrick’s Jewishness (Abrams, Burton, Cocks, Grinberg, Mikics,) and combining it with newly available archival material, this article addresses "Aryan Papers," the Holocaust film project that Kubrick worked on but failed to complete between 1991 and 1993 and why it was never realized

The genome sequence of Philonthus cognatus (Stephens, 1832) (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae), a rove beetle.

We present a genome assembly from an individual male (a rove beetle; Arthropoda; Insecta; Coleoptera; Staphylinidae). The genome sequence is 1,030.6 megabases in span. Most of the assembly is scaffolded into 12 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the X and Y sex chromosomes. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled and is 20.7 kilobases in length. Gene annotation of this assembly on Ensembl identified 29,629 protein coding genes. [Abstract copyright: Copyright: © 2023 Crowley LM et al.

Effects of implementation support on children’s reading outcomes following an online early reading programme: a cluster-randomised controlled trial

    Get PDF
Well-designed computer or app-based instruction has a number of potential benefits (e.g., increasing accessibility and feasibility of high-quality instruction, reducing time and resources required for training expert delivery, saving instructional time). However, variation in implementation can still affect outcomes when using educational technology. Research generally suggests that without follow-up support after training, implementation of educational interventions is often poor and outcomes reduced. However, the extent to which this is the case when the core element of an intervention is computer or app-delivered is not yet clear. This study investigated the effects of providing ongoing implementation support for Headsprout Early Reading (HER, an early reading programme accessible via a computer or an app), to determine whether such support leads to better outcomes. Twenty-two primary schools (269 learners) participated in a cluster-randomised controlled trial. Eleven schools received initial training followed by ongoing support across the school year, whereas the other 11 schools received initial training and technical support only. Pre and post-measures of reading skills were conducted using the York Assessment of Reading for Comprehension. We found no effect of implementation support on outcomes, and no effect of implementation support on delivery of the core element of HER. However, there were some effects of implementation support on the implementation of other HER elements relating to the responsiveness of educators to learners’ learning within HER. These findings have implications for providing access to high quality online instruction in early reading skills at scale, with minimal training. More broadly, the current study suggests that well-designed computer or app-based instruction can yield positive outcomes with minimal implementation support and training. However, further research is required to ensure the interplay between learners’ app-based learning and teacher intervention functions as intended to provide additional support for those who need it
