    “The most astonishing election result since the war”?:Re-examining the Leyton By-election of 1965

    Historic studies of 1960s British election contests often considered the national political dynamics the major determinant in any poll result. This article carefully evaluates how far a combination of political, social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors might have determined the outcome in a specific contest. It considers how they interacted and demonstrates that such an approach can help scholars evaluate the result, and consider the significance, of the Leyton contest of January 1965. While other scholars have noted the significance of Leyton, no comprehensive study exists despite abundant and accessible source material. Alongside addressing this gap in the literature, this article suggests that Leyton-specific issues, such as the town’s larger than usual population of retired residents, was more influential than supposed problems associated with Labour’s candidate, Patrick Gordon Walker, and his previous defeat at the Smethwick constituency

    Lake Water Temperature Modeling in an Era of Climate Change: Data Sources, Models, and Future Prospects

    Abstract Lake thermal dynamics have been considerably impacted by climate change, with potential adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems. To better understand the potential impacts of future climate change on lake thermal dynamics and related processes, the use of mathematical models is essential. In this study, we provide a comprehensive review of lake water temperature modeling. We begin by discussing the physical concepts that regulate thermal dynamics in lakes, which serve as a primer for the description of process-based models. We then provide an overview of different sources of observational water temperature data, including in situ monitoring and satellite Earth observations, used in the field of lake water temperature modeling. We classify and review the various lake water temperature models available, and then discuss model performance, including commonly used performance metrics and optimization methods. Finally, we analyze emerging modeling approaches, including forecasting, digital twins, combining process-based modeling with deep learning, evaluating structural model differences through ensemble modeling, adapted water management, and coupling of climate and lake models. This review is aimed at a diverse group of professionals working in the fields of limnology and hydrology, including ecologists, biologists, physicists, engineers, and remote sensing researchers from the private and public sectors who are interested in understanding lake water temperature modeling and its potential applications

The impact of financial development is statistically significant above and below the optimal level, but its impact on income inequality is not asymmetric, with the costs of financial ‘under-development’ being greater than those for ‘over-development’

    Austerity Alive and Well in Wales and UBI in Intensive Care

    There have been many Universal Basic Income (UBI) pilots worldwide and a large literature has emerged outlining mostly positive findings but also acknowledging that no government has implemented the policy. In June 2022 the Welsh Government launched the UK's most important UBI pilot to date with young adults who have been looked after by the statutory care system (referred to as ‘care leavers’). The pilot would be appraised by an ongoing rigorous evaluation process until 2025 with the results not fully known until 2027. However, even before the results of the evaluation are known, the Welsh Government has decided not to roll out a permanent UBI to care leavers after the pilot ends because of costs. We consider the implications of the Welsh pilot with special focus on continuing austerity and the cost-of-living crisis, and within the context of Welsh Government's commitment to the well-being of future generations. With another UBI-curious government deciding not to adopt it, it further undermines worldwide confidence in UBI as a credible policy

    Challenges and Opportunities in Data Visualization Education: A Call to Action

    This paper is a call to action for research and discussion on data visualization education. As visualization evolves and spreads through our professional and personal lives, we need to understand how to support and empower a broad and diverse community of learners in visualization. Data Visualization is a diverse and dynamic discipline that combines knowledge from different fields, is tailored to suit diverse audiences and contexts, and frequently incorporates tacit knowledge. This complex nature leads to a series of interrelated challenges for data visualization education. Driven by a lack of consolidated knowledge, overview, and orientation for visualization education, the 21 authors of this paper—educators and researchers in data visualization—identify and describe 19 challenges informed by our collective practical experience. We organize these challenges around seven themes People, Goals & Assessment, Environment, Motivation, Methods, Materials, and Change. Across these themes, we formulate 43 research questions to address these challenges. As part of our call to action, we then conclude with 5 cross-cutting opportunities and respective action items: embrace DIVERSITY+INCLUSION, build COMMUNITIES, conduct RESEARCH, act AGILE, and relish RESPONSIBILITY. We aim to inspire researchers, educators and learners to drive visualization education forward and discuss why, how, who and where we educate, as we learn to use visualization to address challenges across many scales and many domains in a rapidly changing world: viseducationchallenges.github.io

    Influence of cohesive clay on wave–current ripple dynamics captured in a 3D phase diagram

    Wave–current ripples that develop on seabeds of mixed non-cohesive sand and cohesive clay are commonplace in coastal and estuarine environments. While laboratory research on ripples forming in these types of mixed-bed environments is relatively limited, it has identified deep cleaning, the removal of clay below the ripple troughs, as an important factor controlling ripple development. New large-scale flume experiments seek to address this sparsity in data by considering two wave-current conditions with 15 initial clay content, C0, ranging from 0 to 18.3%. The experiments record ripple development and pre- and post-experiment bed clay contents, to quantify clay winnowing. The present experiments are combined with previous wave–only, wave–current and current–only experiments to produce a consistent picture of larger and smaller flatter ripples over a range of wave-current conditions and C0. Specifically, the results reveal a sudden decrease in the ripple steepness for C0 > 10.6%, likely associated with a three-20 orders of magnitude decrease in hydraulic conductivity. Accompanying the sudden change in steepness is a gradual linear decrease in wavelength with C0 for C0 > 7.4%. Ultimately, for the highest values of C0, the bed remains flat, but clay winnowing still takes place, albeit at a rate two orders of magnitude lower than for rippled beds. For a given flow, the initiation time, when ripples first appear on a flat bed, increases with increasing C0. This, together with the fact that the bed remains flat for the highest values of C0, 25 demonstrates that the threshold of motion increases with C0. The inferred threshold enhancement, and the occurrence of large and small ripples, is used to construct a new three-dimensional phase diagram of bed characteristics involving the wave and current Shields parameters and C0, which has important implications for morphodynamic modelling

    Going DEEP - an evaluation of a social pedagogy informed approach to evidence enriched practice in social care

    Social care workers benefit from multiple types of evidence to enhance the wellbeing of citizens, support their own wellbeing and improve social care services. Building capacity within social care to find, collect and use different forms of evidence is an international concern. The Developing Evidence Enriched Practice (DEEP) programme in Wales is informed by the values and aims of social pedagogy. It aspires to enhance both the generation and the use of evidence in social care. To learn about what works in the programme, we conducted an evaluation based on contribution analysis to explore programme impacts during 2020-2023. Based on a co-produced theory of change the evaluation drew on exemplar cases, questionnaire responses, documentary evidence, process data and unsolicited feedback. There was evidence that the DEEP programme contributed to people gaining a better understanding and valuing of different forms of evidence. Citizen voice could become more central in decision-making, and there were examples of practice, policy and research being informed by diverse evidence. Many people who attended the DEEP learning course enhanced their confidence and skills in using the DEEP approach and said they would put their learning into practice. It was harder to evidence longer-term impacts and the sustainability of the approach. These findings suggest there can be merit in developing capacity building programmes informed by social pedagogy. Such programmes can be characterised as being relational, holistic, practice focused, multi-faceted, contextualised and co-produced with intended beneficiaries
