    Sex bias in mortality risk changes over the lifespan of bottlenose dolphins.

    Research on sex biases in longevity in mammals often assumes that male investment in competition results in a female survival advantage that is constant throughout life. We use 35 years of longitudinal data on 1003 wild bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) to examine age-specific mortality, demonstrating a time-varying effect of sex on mortality hazard over the five-decade lifespan of a social mammal. Males are at higher risk of mortality than females during the juvenile period, but the gap between male and female mortality hazard closes in the mid-teens, coincident with the onset of female reproduction. Female mortality hazard is non-significantly higher than male mortality hazard in adulthood, resulting in a moderate male bias in the oldest age class. Bottlenose dolphins have an intensely male-competitive mating system, and juvenile male mortality has been linked to social competition. Contrary to predictions from sexual selection theory, however, male–male competition does not result in sustained male-biased mortality. As female dolphins experience high costs of sexual coercion in addition to long and energetically expensive periods of gestation and lactation, this suggests that substantial female investment in reproduction can elevate female mortality risk and impact sex biases in lifespan

    Migratory bats are sensitive to magnetic inclination changes during the compass calibration period

    The Earth's magnetic field is used as a navigational cue by many animals. For mammals, however, there are few data to show that navigation ability relies on sensing the natural magnetic field. In night-time migrating bats, experiments demonstrating a role for the solar azimuth at sunset in the calibration of the orientation system suggest that the magnetic field is a candidate for their compass. Here, we investigated how an altered magnetic field at sunset changes the nocturnal orientation of the bat Pipistrellus pygmaeus. We exposed bats to either the natural magnetic field, a horizontally shifted field (120°), or the same shifted field combined with a reversal of the natural value of inclination (70° to -70°). We later released the bats and found that the take-off orientation differed among all treatments. Bats that were exposed to the 120° shift were unimodally oriented northwards in contrast to controls which exhibited a bimodal north-south distribution. Surprisingly, the orientation of bats exposed to both a 120° shift and reverse inclination was indistinguishable from a uniform distribution. These results suggest that these migratory bats calibrate the magnetic field at sunset, and for the first time, they show that bats are sensitive to the angle of magnetic inclination.</p

    More foreign aid, less financial development

    We examine whether foreign aid substitutes domestic finance. A simple theoretical model is presented to show that foreign aid might raise private consumption but reduce private borrowing, which could be consistent with undermining financial development. The results of empirical tests of the foreign aid–financial development relationship reported employing crosssectional and panel data sets of 96 developing countries for the period 1971-2015. The results indicate that foreign aid inflows have a negative and highly significant impact on financial development in aid-recipient countries. The results are not affected by model specification, different control variables, variation in country sample, or estimation technique. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to test the foreign aid–financial development linkage

    What do you Bring to the Table? Exploring Psychological Attributes that Predict Successful Military Training

    The psychological characteristics that new recruits bring when starting military basic training (MBT) may help or hinder successful completion rates. The first part of this study explores how psychological characteristics assessed at the start of MBT influence retention and performance outcomes upon completion. At the start and upon completing MBT, a sample of 204 UK male Infantry recruits undergoing a 26-week Combat Infantryman’s Course were assessed on personality traits (psychoticism, neuroticism, and extroversion); a set of relevant cognitions (i.e. effortful control); motivation (i.e. internalization of military core values); and an assessment of mentally tough behavior. Recruits who successfully completed MBT were significantly higher in age, psychoticism, and mentally tough behavior. The second part of the study explored how MBT influenced these variables across time. A subsample of 132 male Infantry recruits that passed basic military training first time were analyzed. Across the 26-week course, there was a significant increase in extraversion, and a significant decrease in neuroticism, and external regulation. Results differed slightly when we removed the lowest passing group from the analysis and whether MANOVA or Logistic Regression analysis was used. Results indicate that what you bring to the table will influence pass and retention rates

    High-resolution maps show that rubber causes substantial deforestation

    Understanding the effects of cash crop expansion on natural forest is of fundamental importance. However, for most crops there are no remotely sensed global maps1, and global deforestation impacts are estimated using models and extrapolations. Natural rubber is an example of a principal commodity for which deforestation impacts have been highly uncertain, with estimates differing more than fivefold1,2,3,4. Here we harnessed Earth observation satellite data and cloud computing5 to produce high-resolution maps of rubber (10 m pixel size) and associated deforestation (30 m pixel size) for Southeast Asia. Our maps indicate that rubber-related forest loss has been substantially underestimated in policy, by the public and in recent reports6,7,8. Our direct remotely sensed observations show that deforestation for rubber is at least twofold to threefold higher than suggested by figures now widely used for setting policy4. With more than 4 million hectares of forest loss for rubber since 1993 (at least 2 million hectares since 2000) and more than 1 million hectares of rubber plantations established in Key Biodiversity Areas, the effects of rubber on biodiversity and ecosystem services in Southeast Asia could be extensive. Thus, rubber deserves more attention in domestic policy, within trade agreements and in incoming due-diligence legislation

    Adaptation of an eHealth Intervention: iSupport for Carers of People with Rare Dementias

    ‘iSupport’ is an online psychoeducation and skills development intervention created by the World Health Organisation to support people with dementia. This project adapted iSupport for carers of people with rare dementias (iSupport RDC), creating a new resource to support the health and wellbeing of this underserved population. The adaptation involved three phases: (1) Codesign methods to generate preliminary adaptations; (2) Analysis of phase one findings informingadaptations to iSupport to develop; iSupport RDC; (3) Post-adaptation survey to ascertain participant agreement with the adaptations in iSupport RDC. Fourteen participants contributed, resulting in 212 suggested adaptations, of which 94 (92%) were considered practical, generalisable, and aligned with iSupport principles. These adaptations encompassed content and design changes, including addressing the challenges of rare dementias (PCA, PPA, LBD, and FTD). iSupport RDC represents a significant adaptation of the WHO iSupport intervention. Its tailored nature acknowledges the unique needs of people caring for someone with a rare dementia, improving their access to specialisedresources and support. By extending iSupport to this population, it contributes to advancing dementia care inclusivity and broadening the understanding of rare dementias. A feasibility study is underway to assess iSupport RDCs acceptability, with prospects for cultural adaptations to benefit carers globally

    “It's opened my eyes to what's out there”: How do nature-based interventions influence access to and perceptions of the natural environment?

    The health and wellbeing benefits of engagement with the natural environment are well documented. Nature-based interventions (NBIs) can widen access, but little is known about how they affect independent use and perception of greenspace. This mixed methods study examines the longer-term influence of one NBI on woodland visits. 120 adults took part in a longitudinal questionnaire survey, and 20 participated in focus groups. An increase in independent woodland visits was found to continue to rise beyond the programme endpoint suggesting that NBIs can act as a turning point for engagement with nature, breaking down psychological, emotional and socio-cultural barriers

    'I have never bounced back': resilience and living with dementia

    This work responds to the limited research about resilience when living with dementia and develops a conceptual model to inform service development and healthcare practices for this population. An iterative process of theory building across four phases of activity (scoping review  = 9 studies), stakeholder engagement (  = 7), interviews (  = 11) generated a combined sample of 87 people living with dementia and their carers, including those affected by rare dementias to explore their lived experiences. An existing framework of resilience developed in other populations served as the starting point to analyse and synthesise the findings, inspiring a new conceptual model of resilience unique to the experience of living with dementia. The synthesis suggests resilience encompasses the daily struggles of living with a dementia; people are not flourishing, thriving or 'bouncing back', but are managing and adapting under pressure and stress. The conceptual model suggests resilience may be achieved through the collective and collaborative role of psychological strengths, practical approaches to adapting to life with dementia, continuing with hobbies, interests and activities, strong relationships with family and friends, peer support and education, participating in community activities and support from healthcare professionals. Most of these themes are not reflected in resilience outcome measures. Practitioners adopting a strengths-based approach utilising the conceptual model at the point of diagnosis and post-diagnosis support may help individuals achieve resilience through appropriately tailored services and support. This 'resilience practice' could also extend to other degenerative or debilitating chronic conditions a person faces in their life course
