    How Efficient IsModel-to-Model Data Assimilation atMitigating Atmospheric Forcing Errors in a Regional Ocean Model?

    This paper examines the efficiency of a recently developed Nesting with Data Assimilation (NDA) method at mitigating errors in heat and momentum fluxes at the ocean surface coming from external forcing. The analysis uses a set of 19 numerical simulations, all using the same ocean model and exactly the same NDA process. One simulation (the reference) uses the original atmospheric data, and the other eighteen simulations are performed with intentionally introduced perturbations in the atmospheric forcing. The NDA algorithm uses model-to-model data assimilation instead of assimilating observations directly. Therefore, it requires a good quality, although a coarser resolution data assimilating parent model. All experiments are carried out in the South East Arabian Sea. The variables under study are sea surface temperature, kinetic energy, relative vorticity and enstrophy. The results show significant improvement in bias, root-mean-square-error, and correlation coefficients between the reference and the perturbed models when they are run in the data assimilating configurations. Residual post-assimilation uncertainties are similar or lower than uncertainties of satellite based observations. Different length of DA cycle within a range from 1 to 8 days has little effect on the accuracy of results

    his article examines the various ways new wealth infiltrated the Welsh gentry during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, considering the behaviours and actions of new men, together with the processes they followed to assimilate into the world of the old families. This study emphasises a level of openness of landed society to new arrivals able to comport themselves according to the expectations of the existing social elite. It demonstrates that acquiring land and property, which served as a visible display of their wealth, was only one strategy deployed by new wealth to secure gentry status. Other approaches included building country houses, consuming fashionable goods, undertaking public duties, political representation, drawing on culture and living heritage by projecting an image of ancient lineage (Welsh gentry understanding of Welshness was heavily reliant on lineage) through name-changing, adopting coats of arms and family mottos

    Rapidly recognizing and understanding others’ social interactions is an important ability that relies on deciphering multiple sources of information; for example, perceiving body information and inferring others’ intentions. Despite recent advances in characterizing the brain basis of this ability in adults, its developmental underpinnings are virtually unknown. Here, we used fMRI to investigate which sources of social information support superior temporal sulcus (STS) responses to interactive biological motion (i.e. 2 interacting point-light human figures) at different developmental intervals in human participants (of either sex): Children show supportive functional connectivity with key nodes of the mentalizing network, while adults show stronger reliance on regions associated with body- and dynamic social interaction/biological motion processing. We suggest that adults employ efficient action-intention understanding via body and biological motion information, while children show a stronger reliance on hidden mental-state inferences as a potential means of learning to better understand others’ interactive behavior

    Effects of Neurofeedback Training on Frontal Midline Theta Power, Shooting Performance and Attentional Focus with Experienced Biathletes

    Frontal midline theta power (FMT) has been associated with superior rifle shooting performance. Our experiment examined whether electroencephalographic-based training could increase FMT, shooting performance and attentional focus in highly-trained/elite biathletes. Participants (n = 28; age, M = 21.7, SD = 2.3) were assigned to a control group or an intervention group (with 3 h of neurofeedback training). FMT increased from baseline during the neurofeedback training sessions (p ≤ 0.05). However, there were no group × pre-post training (test) interactions for FMT or shooting performance (p > 0.05). There was a small group × test effect for attentional focus (p = 0.07; ηp2 = 0.12), indicating a potential benefit of neurofeedback training. Superior shooters were more proficient at increasing FMT during neurofeedback training, but this did not translate to greater improvements in shooting performance. Our findings suggest that the effects of neurofeedback training are transient and do not necessarily benefit performance

    Differential effects of repeated inspiratory and limb muscle loading on effort perception in patients with obstructive sleep apnea and healthy males

    Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by collapse of the upper airways during sleep. The contribution of alterations in effort perception is not understood. This study investigated the response of inspiratory and quadriceps muscles to repetitive loading on effort perception in OSA patients, pre and post continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment, and in healthy individuals. Twenty-one OSA patients and 40 healthy participants completed protocols for repetitive inspiratory and leg muscle loading combined with intermittent rating of perceived exertion (RPE 14—somewhat hard/hard) to assess effort sensitivity. Electromyography, inspiratory pressure and isometric force were measured. OSA patients reported higher fatiguability of respiratory and leg muscles than controls. OSA patients revealed lower effort sensitivity in the leg muscles compared with controls, while repetitive loading led to a decline in force production. In the respiratory system, OSA patients revealed similar effort sensitivity at baseline compared with controls, but a large reduction in effort sensitivity after loading. Baseline effort sensitivity was correlated with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). After CPAP treatment, OSA patients revealed a decreased baseline effort sensitivity with a missing loading response. Effort sensitivity was differentially affected in the respiratory and leg systems with outcomes of CPAP treatment suggesting a full reversibility. Outcomes suggest that reversible adaptive response of effort perception in the respiratory system might contribute to the severity of OSA

    Biochar application to temperate grasslands: challenges and opportunities for delivering multiple ecosystem services

    Grasslands (natural, semi-natural and improved) occupy approximately one-third of the terrestrial biosphere and are key for global ecosystem service provision, storing up to 30% of soil organic carbon (SOC). To date, most research on soil carbon (C) sequestration has focused on croplands where the levels of native soil organic matter (SOM) are typically low and significant potential exists to replenish SOM stocks. However, with the renewed push to achieve “net zero” C emissions by 2050, grasslands may offer an additional C store, utilising tools such as biochar. Here, we critically evaluate the potential for biochar as a technology for increasing grassland C stocks, identifying a number of practical, economic, social and legislative challenges that need to be addressed before the widescale adoption of biochar may be achieved. We critically assess the current knowledge within the field of grassland biochar research in the context of ecosystem service provision and provide opinions on the applicability of biochar as an amendment to different types of grassland (improved, semi-improved and unimproved) and the potential effect on ecosystem provision using a range of application techniques in the topsoil and subsoil. We concluded that the key question remains, is it possible for managed grasslands to store more C, without causing a loss in additional ecosystem services? To address this question future research must take a more multidisciplinary and holistic approach when evaluating the potential role of biochar at sequestering C in grasslands to mitigate climate change.
