    Untargeted lipidomics in overweight males with cardiovascular diseases - influence of smoking status : diploma thesis

    Pušenje duhana odgovorno je za prerani razvoj kardiovaskularnih bolesti različitim mehanizmima, a abnormalne razine lipidnih seruma i razina lipoproteina jedna su od posljedica. Lipidi su biomolekule koje igraju vitalnu ulogu u raznim fiziopatologijama. Kako bi se otkrila funkcija lipida, od iznimne je važnosti identificirati i kvantificirati pojedinačne molekularne vrste lipida u složenim biološkim sustavima. Lipidomika je brzo razvijajuća analitička tehnika sposobna mjeriti stotine lipida i trenutno je na čelu znanstvenih istraživanja zbog važnosti lipida u zdravlju i bolesti. Cilj ove studije bio je procijeniti učinak pušenja cigareta na profil lipida u pacijenata s prekomjernom tjelesnom težinom s već razvijenom kardiovaskularnom bolešću pomoću tekuće kromatografije (LC) spojene online s masenom spektrometrijom (MS). Sveukupno zapažanje ove studije bilo je da je došlo do povećanja koncentracije masnih kiselina i nekih specifičnih triglicerida (TG) i diglicerida (DG) te do smanjenja koncentracije kolesterol estera (i zasićene i nezasićene) , fosfatidilkolina (osobito nezasićene) i lizofosfatidikolina (osobito zasićene), i TG zasićen u pušača u usporedbi s nepušačima. Stoga se na temelju ove studije može reći da pušenje utječe i narušava profil lipida, ali kod pacijenata s već postojećim kardiovaskularnim bolestima i mnogim dodatnim čimbenicima pušenje možda nema tako značajan utjecaj kao prije razvoja bolestiTobacco smoking is responsible for the premature development of cardiovascular disease by various mechanisms, and abnormal serum lipid profile and lipoprotein levels are one of the consequences. Lipids are crucial small biomolecules and play vital roles in a variety of physio-pathological events. In order to unravel lipid function, it is of utmost importance to identify and quantify single lipid molecular species in complex biological systems. Lipidomics is a rapidly evolving analytical technique capable of measuring hundreds of lipids and is currently at the forefront of scientific research due to the importance of lipids in health and disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoking on lipid profile in overweight patients with already developed cardiovascular disease by liquid chromatography (LC) coupled online to mass spectrometry (MS). The overall observation of the present study was that, there was an increase in concentration of fatty acids, and some specific triglycerides (TG) and diglycerides (DG) and decrease in the concentration of colesteryl esters (both saturated and unsaturated) phosphatidylcholines (especially unsaturated) and lysophosphatidycolines (especially saturated), and triglycerides saturated in smokers compared to nonsmokers. Thus, it can be said, based on the present study, that smoking affects and deranges the lipid profile, but in patients with already existing cardiovascular diseases and many confounding factors smoking may not have such significant influence as before disease development

    β-Laktami i hidantoini pokazuju raznoliku biološku aktivnost. Cilj ove doktorske disertacije bio je priprava kiralnih 3,5-disupstituiranih hidantoina i fenilamino-derivata parazoantina A i F polazeći iz β-laktama. Provedena istraživanja obuhvatila su njihovu enantioseparaciju, određivanje apsolutne konfiguracije te ispitivanja biološkog djelovanja. Dijastereomerna smjesa cis- i trans-3-amino-β-laktama 3 i 4 dobivena je reakcijom ciklokondenzacije metilnog estera glicina i imina 1a,b. Enantiomerno čisti trans-3-amino-β-laktami 4c,d dobiveni su reakcijom ciklokondenzacije (+)- ili (−)-mentilnog estera glicina s iminom 1a. Racemični trans-3-amino-β-laktam 4e dobiven je Staudingerovom reakcijom između karboksilne kiseline aktivirane 2-klor-1-metilpiridin-jodidom i imina 1a. Amino skupina na C-3 položaju β- laktamskog prstena poslužila je u daljnjoj sintetskoj nadogradnji prstena. Kondenzacijom amino skupine β-laktama s različitim aromatskim i alifatskim izocijanatima pripravljene su β- laktamske uree 12a-v, koje su potom intramolekulskom transformacijom prevedene u kiralne 3,5-disupstituirane hidantoine 13a-i/14a-i. U pokušajima sinteza fenilamino-derivata parazoantina A i F, reakcija kondenzacije između N-Boc-aminopropanala i anilina nije uspjela. S ciljem enantioseparacije novosintetiziranih molekula razvijene su enantioselektivne HPLC i SFC metode za odjeljivanje kiralnih β-laktamskih urea 12a-v i 3,5-disupstituiranih hidantoina 13a-i i 14a-i upotrebom polisaharidnih kiralnih nepokretnih faza. Kod primjene SFC kromatografije, ispitan je utjecaj kiralne nepokretne faze, vrste alkoholnog modifikatora, udjela trietilamina, temperature kolone i povratnog tlaka na enantioseparaciju β-laktamskih urea 12a- v. Apsolutne konfiguracije 3-amino-β-laktama i 3,5-disupstituiranih hidantoina određene su primjenom ECD spektroskopije i TDDFT matematičke metode. U sklopu određivanja in silico biološke aktivnosti novosintetiziranih molekula predviđeni su ADME i toksikološki parametri trans--laktamskih urea, 3,5-disupstituiranih hidantoina, prirodnih parazoantina A-J i fenilamino-derivata parazoantina A i F. Antimikrobno djelovanje β-laktamskih urea 12a-v ispitano je u in vitro uvjetima na odabranim sojevima bakterija i gljivica. Novosintetizirane trans-3-amino-β-laktamske uree 12a-v nisu pokazale antibakterijsko i antifungalno djelovanje. Antiproliferativno djelovanje trans-3-amino-β-laktamskih urea 12a, 12b, 12c, 12f, 12h, 12o, 12p, 12r i 12t i 3,5-disupstituiranih hidantoina 13a-i i 14a-i ispitano je u in vitro uvjetima pomoću MTT testa na staničnim linijama hepatocelularnog karcinoma jetre (HepG2), karcinoma jajnika (A2780), karcinoma dojke (MCF-7) te netransformiranih ljudskih fibroblasta (HFF-1). Najjači citotoksični učinak na staničnu liniju MCF-7 pokazao je hidantoin 14c a - laktamska urea 12p na staničnu liniju A2780. Spojevi 13g, 13h, 14c, 14g i 14h pokazuju citotoksični učinak na zdrave HFF-1 stanice.β-Lactams and hydantoins show various biological activities. The goal of this doctoral thesis was to synthesize chiral 3,5-disubstituted hydantoins and phenylamino derivatives of Parazoanthine A and F from -lactams. Conducted research comprised their enantioseparation, absolute configuration determination and biological evaluation. Diastereomeric mixture of cis- and trans-3-amino-β-lactams 3 and 4 was synthesized using cyclocondensation reaction of glycine methyl ester and imine 1a,b. Enantiomerically pure trans-3-amino-β-lactams 4c,d were synthesized using cyclocondensation reaction of (+)- or (−)-glycine menthyl ester with imine 1a. Racemic trans-3-amino-β-lactam 4e was synthesized by the Staudinger reaction of carboxylic acid activated with 2-chloro-1-methylpyridinium iodide with imine 1a. The amino group at the C-3 position of the β-actam ring was used for further structural upgrade. β-Lactams ureas 12a-v were prepared by the condensation reaction of the amino group of β-lactam ring with variuos aromatic and aliphatic isocyanates, which were then converted into chiral 3,5- disubstituted hydantoins 13a-i/14a-i via intramolecular transformation. Furthermore, the synthesis of phenylamino derivatives of Parazoanthine A and F was attempted, but the condensation reaction of N-Boc-aminopropanal with aniline did not proceed. Enantioselective HPLC methods were developed for the separation of trans--lactam ureas 12a-v and 3,5- disubstituted hydantoins 13a-i and 14a-i, and also SFC method for the separation of trans-- lactams ureas 12a-v, on the polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases. The effect of the chiral stationary phase, type of alcoholic modifier, the volume fraction of triethylamine, column temperature, and backpressure on the separation efficiency were investigated. The absolute configurations of 3-amino-β-lactams and 3,5-disubstituted hydantoins was determined by ECD spectroscopy and TDDFT calculations. In addition, set of ADME and toxicity parameters were predicted for trans--lactam ureas, 3,5-disubstituted hydantoins, natural Parazoanthines A-J and phenylamino derivatives of Parazoanthines A i F. The antimicrobial activity of trans-- lactams ureas 12a-v was tested in vitro against different strains of bacteria and fungi. All new trans--lactams ureas 14a-v have shown no antibacterical and antifungal activity. The antiproliferative activity of trans--lactam ureas 12a, 12b, 12c, 12f, 12h, 12o, 12p, 12r and 12t and 3,5-disubstituted hydantoins 13a-i and 14a-i was determined in vitro using the MTT assay on liver hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2), ovarian carcinoma (A2780), breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) and untransformed human fibroblasts (HFF-1). Hydantoin 14c showed the strongest cytotoxic effect against MCF-7 cell line and -lactam urea 12p against A2780 cell line. Compounds 13g, 13h, 14c, 14g and 14h showed cytotoxic effect against healthy HFF-1 cells

    Sir iz mišine je tradicionalni hrvatski sir koji zrije u životinjskoj (jarećoj ili janjećoj) koži-mješini. U ovom završnom radu analiziran je sastav i sadržaj hlapljivih spojeva sira iz mišine. Izolacija hlapljivih spojeva izvršena je mikroekstrakcijom vršnih para na čvrstoj fazi korištenjem sivog vlakna pri tri različite temperature (40, 50 i 60 °C). Svi uzorci analizirani su vezanim sustavom plinska kromatografija-spektrometrija masa na HP-5MS koloni, a dobiveni rezultati su uspoređeni. U sva tri uzorka najzastupljeniji spoj je alkohol etanol, a od ostalih spojeva u uzorcima prevladavaju karboksilne kiseline i njihovi esteri.Cheese in a sack is a traditional Croatian cheese that ripens in animal (goat or lamb) skin. In this bachelor thesis, the composition and content of volatile compounds from the cheese in a sack were analyzed. Isolation of volatile compounds was performed by solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) using gray fiber at three different temperatures (40, 50 and 60 °C). All samples were analyzed by coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry system on an HP-5MS column, and the results were compared. In all three samples, the most common compound is alcohol ethanol, and of the other compounds in the samples, carboxylic acids and their esters predominate

    U ovom završnom radu analiziran je sastav i sadržaj hlapljivih spojeva sira iz mišine. Za izolaciju hlapljivih spojeva sira korištena je destilacija s dušikom i trapovima. Hlapljivi spojevi sakupljani su u tri različita trapa tijekom 3 h i tijekom 6 h. Dobiveni uzorci su analizirani vezanim sustavom plinska kromatografija-spektrometrija masa na HP-5MS koloni. Najzastupljeniji spojevi u svim uzorcima su ugljikovodici, bilo da se radi o aromatskim, ravnolančanim ili razgranatim ugljikovodicima.In this bachelor thesis, the composition and content of volatile compounds from the cheese in a sack were analyzed. Isolation of volatile compounds was performed by nitrogen purge and steam distillation. Volatiles were collected in three different traps during 3 h and 6 h. The obtained samples were analyzed by coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry system on an HP-5MS column.     Cilj ovog rada bio je upoznati se sa sirovinama koje se koriste u proizvodnji piva, tehnologijom njegove proizvodnje te radom „Grainfather“ sustava te pomoću njega proizvesti craft pivo koje smo nazvali Lag.anica. Pivo je jedno od najstarijih alkoholnih pića porijeklom iz Mezopotamije, a prema arheološkim zapisima taj prvi oblik piva nije bio ni nalik na pivo kakvo danas poznajemo. Usporedno s napretkom znanosti i tehnologije, značajno je napredovala i proizvodnja piva, posebice craft piva koje je danas sve popularnije i čija proizvodnja uzima sve više maha. Craft pivo je svako pivo nastalo u craft pivovari ili domaćinstvu, odnosno onaj proizvod dobiven od strane pojedinačne osobe ili nezavisne tvrtke koja svoj proizvod stavlja na tržište samo u svrhu svoga poslovanja te koja ne prodaje više od 6 milijuna barela godišnje. Proizvodnja piva se odvija u nekoliko koraka od kojih su najvažniji ukomljavanje, kuhanje sladovine, cijeđenje, ohmeljavanje, hlađenje, bistrenje, alkoholno vrenje, flaširanje, te karbonizacija. U ovom radu osmišljeno je i proizvedeno craft pivo Lag.anica.The aim of this work was to learn about the raw materials for the beer production, its technology and how the "Grainfather" system works, and to make a craft beer from it, which we called Lag.anica. Beer is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages originating from Mesopotamia, and according to archaeological records, the first form of beer was not even similar to the beer we know today. In parallel with the advances in science and technology, beer production has also evolved significantly, especially craft beer, which is now increasingly popular and the production of which is becoming more and more important. Craft beer is any beer produced in a craft brewery or in a household, that is, that product obtained by an individual person or an independent company that puts its product on the market for the sole purpose of its business and sells no more than 6 million barrels per year. Beer is produced in several steps, the most important of which are malting, wort boiling, pressing, hopping, cooling, clarification, alcoholic fermentation, bottling, and carbonation. Lag.anica craft beer was designed and produced in this work

    Biotransformation of euphoboetirane A by Sordaria tormento-alba aimed at the search for new bioactive molecules : diploma thesis

    Latirani, koji se često nalaze u biljkama roda Euphorbia, pripadaju skupini biološki aktivnih policikličkih diterpenoida. Ova grupa spojeva i njihovi sintetski derivati dobili su značajnu pozornost zahvaljujući svojim biološkim aktivnostima i kliničkom potencijalu protiv različitih bolesti kao što je višestruka otpornost na lijekove (MDR), protuupalno djelovanje, citotoksično djelovanje protiv staničnih linija raka, antivirusna svojstva i njihova sposobnost induciranja proliferacije ili diferencijacije u neurone neuralnih progenitorskih stanica. U ovom radu provedena je izolacija, pročišćavanje i biotransformacija eufoboetirana A (4) pomoću endofitne gljivice Sordaria tomento-alba. Cijele stanice kulture ove gljivice korištene su za biotransformaciju početnog supstrata (4) te su dobivena dva produkta biotransformacije od interesa, koji su odvojeni i pročišćeni kolonskom kromatografijom i HPLC-om. Strukture dobivenih produkata biotransformacije razjašnjene su na temelju opsežnih NMR i MS analiza podataka. Identificirani su kao Sordarianona (23) i 3,5,15-triacetoksi-12-hidroksilatira-6(17),13(20)-dien-14-on (24). Ovo istraživanje pokazuje biotransformacijsku sposobnost endofitne gljivice Sordaria tomento-alba da vrši intramolekularne cikloadicije, hidroksilacije i izomerizacije dvostrukih ugljik-ugljik veza. Ove reakcije mogu dovesti do derivata latirana s pojačanim biološkim aktivnostima, što bi moglo pomoći u rasvjetljavanju strukturnih značajki po kojima ti spojevi pokazuju potencijal za liječenje neurodegenerativnih poremećaja.Lathyranes, frequently found in plants of the genus Euphorbia, belong to the group of biologically active polycyclic diterpenoids. This family of compounds and their synthetic derivatives have received considerable attention owing to their interesting biological activities and clinical potential against different diseases like multi-drug resistance (MDR) reversal, anti-inflammatory activity, cytotoxic activity against cancer cell lines, antiviral properties and their capability to induce proliferation or differentiation into neurons of neural progenitor cells. In this work, it has been carried out the isolation, purification and biotransformation of euphoboetirane A (4) by the endophytic fungus Sordaria tomento-alba. Whole cell culture of this fungus was used to biotransform the initial substrate (4) in two biotransformation products of interest, which were separated and purified by the column chromatography and HPLC. The structures of obtained biotransformation products were elucidated on the basis of extensive NMR and MS data analyses. They were identified as Sordarianona (23) and 3,5,15-triacetoxy-12-hydroxylathyra-6(17),13(20)-dien-14-on (24). This research shows biotransformation ability of endophytic fungus Sordaria tomento-alba to perform intramolecular cycloadditions, hydroxylations and isomerisations of carbon-carbon double bonds. These reactions may lead to lathyrane derivatives with enhanced biological activities, which could help to clarify the structural features by which these compounds show potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders

    Investigation of the possibility of application of Fe(III)-modified zeolite for the remediation of mercury-contaminated soil from the Idrija mine site in Slovenia : bachelor thesis

    U ovom završnom radu provedeno je ispitivanje ispiranja živom zasićenih Fe(III)-modificiranih zeolita (FeZ) prema standardnoj DIN 38414 S4 normi i TCLP proceduri (engl. Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure). U širokom rasponu pH, 3 ≤ pH o ≤ 11 uočena je minimalna desorpcija Hg(II) iz živom zasićenih zeolita, dok je značajnija uočena pri pH o =2 i pH o =12. Budući da je količina desorbirane Hg(II) prema TCLP proceduri bila veća od propisanog kriterija (0,2 mg/L) FeZ se može primijeniti samo za ex situ remedijaciju. TCLP procedura primijenjena je na živom onečišćeno tlo s područja rudnika Idrije u Sloveniji s i bez dodatka FeZ kako bi se procijenila potencijalna toksičnost tla. Rezultati su pokazali da je tlo izrazito onečišćeno i predstavlja opasni otpad. Dodatak zeolita značajno je smanjio koncentraciju ukupno eluirane Hg. Utvrđeno je da je pri masi od 1,00 g koncentracija ukupno eluirane Hg smanjena ispod TCLP kriterija (0,2 mg/L).In this bachelor thesis, the leaching test of mercury-saturated Fe(III)-modified zeolites (FeZ) was carried out according to the standard DIN 38414 S4 norm and the TCLP procedure (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure). In a wide pH range, 3 ≤ pH o ≤ 11, minimal desorption of Hg(II) from mercury-saturated zeolites was observed, while a more significant one was observed at pH o =2 and pH o =12. Since the amount of desorbed Hg(II) according to the TCLP procedure was greater than the prescribed criterion (0.2 mg/L), FeZ can only be applied for ex situ remediation. The TCLP procedure was applied to mercury-contaminated soil from the Idrija mine site in Slovenia with and without the addition of FeZ in order to assess the potential toxicity of the soil. The results showed that the soil is extremely polluted and represents hazardous waste. The addition of zeolite significantly reduced the concentration of total eluted Hg. It was found that with a mass of 1.00 g, the concentration of total eluted Hg was reduced below the TCLP criteria (0.2 mg/L)

    Spontano emitiranje čestica ili zračenja prouzrokovano raspadom nestabilnih atomskih jezgri naziva se radioaktivnost. Čovjek je svakodnevno izložen zračenju, često ne znajući da su radioaktivne čestice prisutne u zraku, u tlu pa i u ljudskom organizmu. Ovaj rad podijeljen je na dva dijela. U prvom dijelu razmatra se povijesni razvoj radioaktivnosti počevši od otkrića 1896. godine. Nakon toga su definirani temeljni pojmovi vezani uz radioaktivnost i radioaktivno zračenje poput radioaktivnog raspada, nuklearnih reakcija, doza zračenja te mjernih uređaja. Zatim se u drugom dijelu prikazuje podjela zračenja na prirodno i umjetno te posredni i neposredni učinci na čovjeka i ljudsko zdravlje.The spontaneous emission of particles or radiation caused by the decay of unstable atomic nuclei is called radioactivity. Humans are exposed to radiation daily, often not knowing that radioactive particles are present in the air, the soil and even the human body. This paper is divided into two parts. The first part discusses the historical development of radioactivity starting from its discovery in 1896. Afterward, fundamental terms related to radioactivity and radioactive radiation are defined, such as radioactive decay, nuclear reactions, radiation doses, and measuring devices. Following that, the second part presents the division of radiation into natural and artificial as well as the indirect and direct effects on humans and human health

    Effect of electrode material and solution pH for Crystal Violet dye removal : bachelor thesis

    U radu je ispitan utjecaj različitih metala (Al legure AA 2007, brodskog čelika i Zn) na proces uklanjanja boje Crystal Violet (CV) pri različitim početnim pH vrijednostima otopine (pH = 3,2, 5,5 i 7). Odvijanjem postupka elektrokoagulacije (EK) dolazi do porasta temperature i pH otopine. Najmanji porast temperature dobiven je s elektrodama od brodskog čelika, a najveći porast s elektrodama od Zn. Najmanje promjene pH otopine uočene su pri upotrebi Al-elektroda, dok su najveće promjene pH dobivene ispitivanjem sa Zn elektrodama. Vodljivost otopine ne mijenja se značajno tijekom provedbe procesa EK neovisno o pH medija i o materijalu elektrode. Najveća djelotvornost uklanjanja boje CV elektrokoagulacijom dobivena je upotrebom elektroda od brodskog čelika (preko 90 %) neovisno o pH, uz postizanje visokih postotaka uklanjanja već nakon 15 minuta. Najmanja djelotvornost uklanjanja postignuta je s elektrodama od Zn. Najmanji gubitak mase anoda dobiven je za Al-anode, dok je najveći gubitak mase dobiven za Zn anode. Ispitivanjem stanja površine anoda optičkim mikroskopom utvrđeno je da je kod Al i brodskog čelika uz opće otapanje anoda prisutna i oštećenja uzrokovana lokaliziranim oblicima korozije, dok su kod Zn anoda, uslijed intenzivnog općeg otapanja vidljive granice zrna.These studies investigated the influence of different metals (Al alloy AA 2007, shipbuilding steel, and Zn) on the electrocoagulation process (EC) for Crystal Violet dye (CV) removal the at different initial solution pH values (pH = 3.2, 5.5, and 7). As the electrocoagulation process progresses, the temperature and pH of the solution increase. The lowest temperature increase was obtained with electrodes made of shipbuilding steel, and the highest with electrodes made of Zn. The lowest pH changes in the solution were observed when Al electrodes were used, while the highest pH changes were obtained during the tests with Zn electrodes. The conductivity of the solution does not change significantly during the EC process, regardless of the pH of the medium and the material of the electrode. The highest efficiency of CV dye removal by electrocoagulation was obtained using shipbuilding steel electrodes (over 90%) regardless of pH, with high percentages of removal achieved after only 15 minutes. The lowest removal efficiency was achieved with Zn electrodes. The lowest mass loss of the anodes was found with Al anodes, while the highest mass loss was found with Zn anodes. Examination of the condition of the anode surface with an optical microscope revealed that, in addition to the general dissolution of the anode, damage due to localized forms of corrosion was present in Al and shipbuilding steel, while grain boundaries were visible in Zn anodes due to intense general dissolution

    Motar (Crithmum maritimum L.) je višegodišnja halofitna biljka koja u Hrvatskoj raste duž cijele Jadranske obale. Biljka je poznata od davnina, te se listovi konzumiraju kao hrana i začin, dok se u narodnoj medicini koristi kao lijek. Zbog brojnih biološki aktivnih tvari zastupljenih u cijeloj biljci provedena su razna istraživanja u svrhu stjecanja novih znanja i boljeg iskorištenja same biljke. Tako je cilj ovog rada bio ispitati kemijski sastav i antioksidacijsku aktivnost motra te usporediti razlike između ekstrakta cvijeta i ekstrakta lista. Uzorci su prikupljeni na tri različite lokacije: otoku Pagu, otoku Korčuli, te u Cavtatu. Biljnim ekstraktima određen je udio ukupnih fenola i flavonoida, dok je koncentracija klorogenske kiseline određena korištenjem visokodjelotvorne tekućinske kromatografije (engl. High Performance Liquid Chromatography, HPLC). Za određivanje antioksidacijske aktivnosti korištene su tri metode: određivanje antioksidacijske snage redukcije željeza (engl. Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power, FRAP), metoda redukcije 2,2-difenil-1-pikrilhidrazil radikala (engl. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) i ispitivanje kapaciteta apsorpcije kisikovih radikala (engl. Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, ORAC). Iz dobivenih rezultata može se zaključiti kako ekstrakti lista i cvijeta motra imaju visok sadržaj ukupnih fenola, flavonoida te klorogenske kiseline. Osim visokog udjela fenolnih komponenta ekstrakti su pokazali i jako dobru antioksidacijsku aktivnost određenu svim metodama. U radu je uočen i utjecaj lokacije branja motra, pa tako uzorci s lokacije Korčula imaju najviši udio fenolnih komponenta i najbolju antioksidacijsku aktivnost, dok su najlošiji rezultati zabilježeni za uzorke s lokacije Pag. Osim toga, ekstrakti cvijeta motra pokazali su bolje rezultate od ekstrakta lista, što ukazuje na izuzetan potencijal ove biljke koji je još uvijek nedovoljno istražen i neiskorišten.Sea fennel (Crithmum maritimum L.) is a perennial halophytic plant that grows along the entire Adriatic coast in Croatia. The plant has been known since ancient times and the leaves are consumed as food and spice, while in folk medicine it is used as a medicine. Due to the numerous biologically active substances present throughout the plant, various researches have been carried out in order to gain new knowledge and make better use of the plant itself. The aim of this work was therefore to investigate the chemical composition and antioxidant activity in order to compare the differences between the flower and leaf extracts. Samples were collected from three different locations: on the island of Pag, on the island of Korčula and in Cavtat. The plant extracts were used to determine the content of total phenols and flavonoids, while the concetration of chlorogenic acid was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Three methods are used to determine antioxidant activity: ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), the method of reduction of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). From the obtained results, it can be concluded that the extracts of sea fennel leaves and flowers have a high content of total phenols, flavonoids and chlorogenic acid. Besides the high content of phenolic components, the extracts also showed very good antioxidant activity, which was determined by all methods. In the study, the influence of the location of harvesting of the sea fennel was also observed, so that the samples from Korčula showed the highest content of phenolic components and the best antioxidant activity, while the samples from Pag showed the lowest results. In addition, the extracts from the flowers of sea fennel showed better results than the leaf extracts, indicating the extraordinary potential of this plant, which has not yet been sufficiently researched and exploited
