Students' experiences of distress during work-integrated learning
While work-integrated learning (WIL) is praised as effective for providing opportunities for knowledge, skills, and value development in authentic workplaces, student experiences may not always be positive. In New Zealand, the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Students) Code of Practice [Pastoral Care Code of Practice] (2021) requires tertiary providers ensure the wellbeing and safety of their learners. This article analyses survey data on social work students’ experiences of distress during WIL. Results suggest students experienced different distresses, but financial hardship and feeling unsupported on placement were particularly impactful. Material impacts from these and other stressors included reduced confidence, anxiety, adverse physical or mental health, and sleep disruption. The participants utilised personal strategies to manage distress and had mixed experiences of receiving information and support from their tertiary institution. To mitigate distressing experiences recommendations to improve current systems and processes as well as individual students’ experiences will be outlined.fals
Impact of unhealthy food/drink marketing exposure to children in New Zealand: A systematic narrative review
Unhealthy food and drink marketing exposure to children is known to influence children's dietary choices and the World Health Organization recommends governments protect children from the marketing of unhealthy commodities. This study aims to explore and synthesize children's unhealthy food and drink marketing exposure in New Zealand. A systematic search strategy was undertaken following the PRISMA guidelines. Eight databases were searched for studies from inception to January 2024 on marketing exposure of unhealthy food and drink to children aged 2-17 years. A deductive coding analysis was used, with codes sourced from a modified coding framework developed using a diagram sourced from the ASEAN and UNICEF (2023) report. The diagram demonstrates the pathway from marketing exposure to unhealthy food- and drink-related diseases. A total of 1019 studies were screened for eligibility. Forty-five studies met the inclusion criteria - five qualitative, 34 quantitative and four mixed-method studies. The results are presented in a narrative review format. Findings demonstrated children's exposure to unhealthy food/drink marketing is ubiquitous with clear links to dietary preference and consumption. To improve child health now and over the life course, unhealthy food/drink marketing needs to be subjected to greater restriction with enforceable legislation to protect children from exposure to unhealthy marketing, breaking the chain from exposure to ill health.fals
Placing Public Housing: Announcement Effects of New Builds in More and Less Expensive Neighbourhoods
This study investigates the differential effect of the announcement of new public housing locations on property prices in relatively more expensive and less expensive neighbourhoods, taking advantage of a single unanticipated government announcement of new builds in multiple locations in the Australian Capital Territory. We apply three different approaches to control for the quality differences of properties, to be used alongside the difference-in-differences method. We find the announcement dampens property prices in more expensive host neighbourhoods but not in less expensive ones, and when the host neighbourhoods are treated as one, we find that there is no impact, hence masking this heterogeneous impact. Our findings will help policy-makers make important decisions around equity and efficiency in the provision of public housing across regions.fals
Integrating the Cross-Border Industrial Chain: An Exploring of Key Configuration of Agricultural Investment in Lancang-Mekong River Region
The demand for agriculture finance and investment for sustainable agriculture development has long been a concern for many years. However, the insufficient integration of the agricultural technology innovation chain and technology transfer impedes the enhancement of collaborative innovation capability in evolving total factor productivity. This paper utilizes Chinese agricultural companies’ investment in the Lancang-Mekong River region as an example to scrutinize key configuration factors fostering the integration of technical collaboration within agricultural industry chains. The results indicated that Chinese agricultural companies can be classified into two categories based on their approach to technical collaboration. The first category is strength-oriented, and companies in this category have the capability to transform technological investments, yielding relatively high returns. They also have optimistic expectations regarding favorable policies in the host country. This category accounts for about one-third of the companies studied. The second category is potential-oriented, in which firms possess the potential for technological investment transformation, with lower investment returns. They require effective contextual management and tax incentives from the host country to thrive. The impact of foreign direct investment decision-making diminishes, introducing new imperatives for the current host country’s market environment and the management of FDI enterprises in the host country. This study makes contributions to advance the exploration of technology’s impact on agricultural companies’ cross-border investment, stipulating new requirements for the transformative development of regional foreign direct investment, particularly for private enterprises.fals
Genomic selection shows improved expected genetic gain over phenotypic selection of agronomic traits in allotetraploid white clover.
Genomic selection using white clover multi-year-multi-site data showed predicted genetic gains through integrating among-half-sibling-family phenotypic selection and within-family genomic selection were up to 89% greater than half-sibling-family phenotypic selection alone. Genomic selection, an effective breeding tool used widely in plants and animals for improving low-heritability traits, has only recently been applied to forages. We explored the feasibility of implementing genomic selection in white clover (Trifolium repens L.), a key forage legume which has shown limited genetic improvement in dry matter yield (DMY) and persistence traits. We used data from a training population comprising 200 half-sibling (HS) families evaluated in a cattle-grazed field trial across three years and two locations. Combining phenotype and genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) data, we assessed different two-stage genomic prediction models, including KGD-GBLUP developed for low-depth GBS data, on DMY, growth score, leaf size and stolon traits. Predictive abilities were similar among the models, ranging from -0.17 to 0.44 across traits, and remained stable for most traits when reducing model input to 100-120 HS families and 5500 markers, suggesting genomic selection is viable with fewer resources. Incorporating a correlated trait with a primary trait in multi-trait prediction models increased predictive ability by 28-124%. Deterministic modelling showed integrating among-HS-family phenotypic selection and within-family genomic selection at different selection pressures estimated up to 89% DMY genetic gain compared to phenotypic selection alone, despite a modest predictive ability of 0.3. This study demonstrates the potential benefits of combining genomic and phenotypic selection to boost genetic gains in white clover. Using cost-effective GBS paired with a prediction model optimized for low read-depth data, the approach can achieve prediction accuracies comparable to traditional models, providing a viable path for implementing genomic selection in white clover.fals
Campylobacter colonization and undernutrition in infants in rural eastern Ethiopia - a longitudinal community-based birth cohort study.
Background: Campylobacter is associated with environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) and malnutrition in children. Campylobacter infection could be a linchpin between livestock fecal exposure and health outcomes in low-resource smallholder settings.
Methods: We followed a birth cohort of 106 infants in rural smallholder households in eastern Ethiopia up to 13 months of age. We measured anthropometry, surveyed sociodemographic determinants, and collected stool and urine samples. A short survey was conducted during monthly visits, infant stool samples were collected, and Campylobacter spp. was quantified using genus-specific qPCR. In month 13, we collected stool and urine samples to assay for EED biomarkers. We employed regression analyses to assess the associations of household determinants with Campylobacter colonization, EED, and growth faltering.
Results: The Campylobacter load in infant stools increased with age. The mean length-for-age Z-score (LAZ) decreased from −0.45 at 3–4 months of age to −2.06 at 13 months, while the prevalence of stunting increased from 3 to 51%. The prevalence of EED at 13 months of age was 56%. A higher Campylobacter load was associated with more frequent diarrhea. Prelacteal feeding significantly increased Campylobacter load in the first month of life. Over the whole follow-up period, Campylobacter load was increased by keeping chickens unconfined at home and unsanitary disposal of infant stools while decreased by mothers’ handwashing with soap. Longitudinally, Campylobacter load was positively associated with food insecurity, introduction of complementary foods, and raw milk consumption. There were no significant associations between Campylobacter load, EED, and LAZ.
Conclusion: This study found that most determinants associated with increased Campylobacter infection were related to suboptimal feeding practices and hygiene. The findings related to livestock-associated risks were inconclusive. Although stunting, EED, and Campylobacter prevalence rates all increased to high levels by the end of the first year of life, no significant association between them was identified. While additional research is needed to investigate whether findings from this study are replicable in other populations, community efforts to improve infant and young child feeding practices and food hygiene, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) at the household level, could reduce (cross-)contamination at the point of exposure.fals
Pathophysiology of Penetrating Captive Bolt Stunning in Horned and Polled Sheep and Factors Determining Incomplete Concussion.
Penetrating captive bolt (PCB) is widely used for stunning and on-farm dispatch of livestock, yet its efficacy can vary, with the potential for animal welfare compromise. This study investigated the pathophysiology of PCB-induced trauma in horned and polled sheep (Ovis aries), focusing on factors contributing to incomplete concussion. Thirty-seven (n = 18 horned Scottish blackface and n = 19 polled North Country mule) mature ewes (aged 4-10 years) were shot with PCB with varying cartridge power and PCB modifications, followed by clinical assessment and post-mortem analysis using magnetic resonance imagining (MRI) and gross pathology. The results indicated that damage to the reticular activating system, bolt velocity and penetration depth are crucial for inducing irreversible unconsciousness, with depths less than 37 mm often resulting in incomplete concussion. MRI provided detailed insights into brain injuries, aligning well with gross pathological findings. This study highlights the importance of precise bolt placement and appropriate PCB configurations in ensuring humane outcomes, with MRI proving to be a valuable tool for assessing brain trauma in stunned animals. These findings enhance the understanding of effective stunning techniques and support improved welfare practices in livestock management.fals
Molecular survey of canine parvovirus type 2: the emergence of subtype 2c in New Zealand
AIMS:
To determine the genetic makeup of carnivore parvoviruses currently circulating in New Zealand; to investigate their evolutionary patterns; and to compare these viruses with those detected during the previous New Zealand-based survey (2009-2010).
METHODS:
Faecal samples from dogs (n = 40) with a clinical diagnosis of parvovirus enteritis were voluntarily submitted by veterinarians from throughout New Zealand. In addition, one sample was collected from a cat with comparable clinical presentation. The samples were used for DNA extraction and PCR amplification of viral protein 2 (VP2) of canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2). All samples produced amplicons of the expected sizes, which were then sequenced. The viruses were subtyped based on the presence of specific amino acids at defined locations. In addition, VP2 sequences were analysed using phylogeny and molecular network analysis.
RESULTS:
The majority (30/40; 75%) of CPV-2-infected dogs were younger than 6 months and 8/40 (20%) were aged between 9 months and 1 year. Most (39/41; 95%) parvoviruses were subtyped as CPV-2c, and one as the original CPV-2. The faecal sample from a cat was positive for feline panleukopenia virus. The majority (37/39; 95%) of New Zealand CPV-2c viruses were monophyletic. The remaining two New Zealand CPV-2c viruses clustered with Chinese and Sri Lankan CPV-2c viruses, separately from the main New Zealand clade.
CONCLUSIONS:
There has been an apparent replacement of the CPV-2a viruses with CPV-2c viruses in New Zealand between 2011 and 2019. The source of the current CPV-2c viruses remains undetermined. The monophyletic nature of the majority of viruses detected most likely reflects a country-wide spread of the most successful genotype. However, an occasional introduction of CPV-2 from overseas cannot be excluded.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE:
Current vaccines appear to be protective against disease caused by the CPV-2c viruses currently circulating in New Zealand. Vaccination and protection from environmental sources of CPV-2 until the development of vaccine-induced immunity remains the cornerstone of protection in young dogs against parvovirus enteritis. Ongoing monitoring of the genetic changes in CPV-2 is important, as it would allow early detection of variants that may be more likely to escape vaccine-induced immunity.fals
COVID-19 fear and ethnocentrism in the global south: A cross-cultural analysis
This study explored the extent to which fear of COVID-19 was related to ethnocentrism in 10 Global South nations: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Peru, South Africa, and Singapore. Based on a representative sample of 2963 participants, results revealed ethnocentrism and fear of COVID-19 are positively correlated. In addition, there was a significant difference in ethnocentrism and fear of COVID-19 based on nation and sex. Theoretical implications and future research are discussed, with an emphasis on how the presence of a contagion, a virus, influences intercultural and intergroup dynamics, prejudice, and ethnocentrism.fals
