Electronic Glove: a Teaching Aid for the Hearing Impaired

    No full text
Learning how to speak in order to communicate with others is part of growing up. Like a normal person, deaf and mutes also need to learn how to connect to the world they live in. For this purpose, an Electronic Glove or E-Glove was developed as a teaching aid for the hearing impaired particularly children. E-Glove makes use of the American Sign Language (ASL) as the basis for recognizing hand gestures. It was designed using flex sensors and an accelerometer to detect the degree of bend made by the fingers as well as a movement of the hand. E-Glove transmits the data received from the sensors wirelessly to a computer and then displays the letter or basic word that corresponds to a gesture made by the individual wearing it. E-Glove provides a simple, accurate, reliable, cheap, speedy gesture recognition and user-friendly teaching aid for the instructors that are teaching sign language to the deaf and mute community.

Wavelet transforms and wavelet packets are widely imposed in the analysis and resolution of problems related to science and technical engineering. Decomposition wavelet packet allows several frequency bands according to various levels of resolutions. We apply this transform (PWT) coupled with the SPIHT coder to reduce the limitations of conventional wavelet filter bank. The results obtained using the applied algorithm, are very satisfactory and encouraging compared to many of the best coders cited in the literature and show a visual and numerical superiority over conventional methods. These the promising results are confirmed by visual evaluation parameters (PSNR, MSSIM and VIF)

    No full text
Pattern recognition has been acknowledged as one of the promising research areas and it has drawn the awareness among many researchers since its existence at the beginning of the nineties. Multilayer Neural networks are used in pattern Recognition and classification based on the features derived from the input patterns. The Reflectivity information extracted from the Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) image helps in identifying the convective cloud type which has a strong relation to the precipitation rate. The reflectivity information is rooted in the DWR image with the help of colors and color bar is provided to distinguish among different reflectivity  information. Artificial Neural network predicts the color based on the maximum likelihood estimation problem. This paper presents a  best possible backpropagation algorithm for color identification in DWR images by comparing various backpropagation algorithms such as Levenberg-Marquardt, Conjugate gradient, and Resilient back propagation etc.,. Pattern recognition using Neural networks presents better results compared to standard distance measures. It is observed that Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation algorithm yields a regression value of 99% approximately and accuracy of 98%.

Predictive Approach for Power Quality Improvement Based Direct Power Control

    No full text
The extensive use of non-linear loads in industry becomes increasingly a serious problem that affects the quality of energy delivered to customers. Therefore, the shunt active power filter (SAPF) has emerged as an important industrial tool to eliminate induced harmonic currents   and compensating of reactive power. This paper proposes an improved control configuration for SAPF based on a modern technique called predictive direct power control (Predictive-DPC). The principle of this control is based on the direct regulation of the instantaneous active and reactive powers to guarantee a good energy quality on the grid side. For this purpose the appropriate average voltage vector which cancels power tracking errors is calculated by a simple predictive model at the bigining of each control period. This type of control includes various features such as the lack of look up table (LUTs) and closed current loops and the constant switching frequency is achieved through the use of PWM modulation.  The results of the simulation process show a high performance in the steady and transient state function for predictive-DPC control that might be a reasonable alternative to conventional DPC in the field of active power filtering

    No full text
This paper deals with the design of cascaded 11 level H- bridge inverter. It includes a comparison between the 11 level H-bridge and T-bridge multilevel inverter. The cascaded inverter of higher level is a very effective and practical solution for reduction of total harmonic distortion (THD).These cascaded multilevel inverter can be used for higher voltage applications with more stability. As the level is increased the output waveform becomes more sinusoidal in nature. The inverter is designed using multicarrier sinusoidal pulse width modulation technique for generating triggering pulses for the semiconductor switches used in the device. Through this paper it will be proved that a cascaded multilevel H-bridge topology has higher efficiency than a T-bridge inverter, as whichever source input voltage is provided since input is equal to the output voltage. In T-bridge inverter, the output obtained is half of the applied input, so efficiency is just half as compared to H-bridge. The output waveform is distorted and has higher THD.  The simulation is performed using MATLAB /Simulink 2013 software

    No full text
With emerge of increasing research in the domain of future wireless communications, massive MIMO (multiple inputs multiple outputs) attracted most of researchers interests. Massive MIMO is high-speed wireless communication standards. A channel estimation technology plays the essential role in the MIMO systems. Efficient channel estimation leads to spectral efficient wireless communications. The critics of Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) are the challenging tasks while designing the channel estimation methods. To mitigate the challenges of ISI, we proposed the novel blind channel estimation method which based on Independent component analysis (ICA) in this paper. Proposed channel estimation it works for both blind interference cancellation and ISI cancellation. The proposed Hybrid ICA (HICA) method depends on pulse shape filtering and ambiguity removal to improve the spectral efficiency and reliability for MIMO communications. The Kurtosis operation is used to measure the complex data at first to estimate the common signals. Then we exploited the advantages of 3rd and 4th order Higher Order Statistics (HOS) to priorities the common signals during the channel estimation. In this paper, we present the detailed design and evaluation of HICA blind channel estimation method. We showed the simulation results of HICA against the state-of-art techniques for channel estimation using BER, MSE, and PAPR

In this paper, an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based cognitive multi  relay network is investigated  to maximize  the transmission rate of the cognitive radio (CR) with enhanced  fairness among CR users  with interference to the primary users (PUs) being managed below a certain threshold level. In order to improve the transmission rate of the CR,  optimization of the subcarrier pairing and power allocation is  to be carried out simultaneously.  Firstly  joint optimization problem is formulated and  Composite Genetic and Ordered Subcarrier Pairing (CGOSP) algorithm is proposed to solve the problem.  The motivation behind merging genetic and OSP algorithm is to reduce the complexity of Genetic Algorithm (GA). Further, to have  a fair allocation of resources among CR users, the Round Robin allocation method is adopted so as to allocate subcarrier pairs to relays efficiently. The degree of fairness of the system is calculated using  Jain’s Fairness Index (JFI).  Simulation results demonstrate  the significant improvement in  transmission rate of  the CR,  low computational complexity  and enhanced fairness
