    Eccentric operation of STATCOM using Predictive Controller

    The impact of multilevel converter STATCOM in transmission and distribution system is given high importance. Increment of number of switches in multi-level cascaded H-bridge converter, made it more vulnerable to open circuit and short circuit faults. To reduce the effect of faults on line voltage magnitude, in this paper an advanced improved predictive controller is used to generate PWM pulses for the power electronic devices. A Cascaded H-bridge STATCOM, interconnected to a distribution system with linear and non-linear loads. The feedback control structure of STATCOM has an advantage of reducing THD and controllable reactive power. A switch fault detection and elimination method is proposed with a bypass switch connected to each H-bridge to surpass the faulty  H-bridge. The complete analysis with all control structures is designed in MATLAB/Simulink representing dynamic graphs and feasibility of proposed method is verified

    Challenges to Quit Smoking among Smokers in Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi, Sepang, Selangor, Malaysia

    Cigarette smoking is the largest preventable risk factor for morbidity and mortality in developed countries.  The prevalence of smoking is increasing in Malaysia.  Over the years, we have accumulated the knowledge of the risks and dangers of smoking towards health and had used these as interventions to motivate smokers to quit smoking.  However, quitting smoking is hard as people who stop smoking often start again because of weight gain, stress and withdrawal symptoms.  Therefore, this study aimed to identify the challenges to quit smoking among smokers in Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi, Sepang, Selangor.  A cross-sectional study was conducted with a combination of stratified and simple random sampling.  The study was conducted via a face-to-face interview using a standardized questionnaire.  The data was analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) Version 20.0.  Easy availability of cigarettes was the most challenging factor (86%) followed by seeing things that reminded the respondents of smoking (58%), feeling lost without smoking (53%) and withdrawal symptoms (47%).  To combat these challenges, it is imperative to strengthen the enforcement on regulations advertisement and display of cigarettes and develop more activities on motivation among smokers and their families, which may be organized by government or non-government organizations. Other than that, another important aspect in the promoting smoking cessation program is to encourage smoke-free homes

    Diabetes Mellitus Prevalence and Burden among Community Acquired Pneumonia Patients

    This work aimed at measuring the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus among community acquired pneumonia (CAP) patients and declaring its effect on CAP patient's outcome. Both community acquired pneumonia and diabetes mellitus are common in Egypt, and patients with associated CAP and DM need special care and supervision. This   prospective study was carried out on 108 CAP patients admitted to Abassia Chest Hospital during the period from January 2016 to December 2016. Clinical and radiological diagnosis of pneumonia and DM diagnosis were performed. DM recorded a prevalence of 39.8% among community acquired pneumonia patients. Disturbed level of consciousness is more frequent among diabetic patients than non diabetics. Diabetic patients recorded higher rate of hospital admission, longer duration of hospital stay, higher rate of ICU admission and more sever pneumonia than among non diabetic patients. CURB-65 score showed significant positive correlation with HbA1c of the patients. Associated community-acquired pneumonia and diabetes mellitus is frequent in our locality and labor a double burden on the affected patients leading to poorer prognosis, higher rate of hospitalization with longer duration of hospital stay and ICU admission. So CAP patients with DM need intimate care

    Premarital Sex among Adolescent Street Children in Pekanbaru

    Premarital sex is any behavior that is driven by sexual desire with the opposite sex before marriage. Some premarital sex activities include feeling, kissing, necking, petting, and intercourse. Premarital sex in adolescents has a negative impact such as unwanted pregnancy, unsafe abortion, resulting in increased maternal, neonatal deaths and perinatal, increasing the incidence of HIV / AIDS, dropping out of school. To Know Relations factors knowledge, girlfriend status, exposure to pornography, family harmony, the negative influence of peers and parental supervision with premarital sex on street adolescent girls. Quantitative analytical observational method with cross sectional design. Samples of 100 teenage children street children in Pekanbaru City. Snow ball sampling technique, Instrument is a questionnaire. Univariate data analysis, multivariate bivariate with logistic regression test. showed 65% (65 people) prenup sex, 78% dating, 74% pornography exposure, peer influence 70%, lack of knowledge of youth 61%, family not harmonious 80%, and low parental supervision 57 %. The related variables (p value <0.05) with premarital sex behavior are boyfriend status, pornographic exposure and peer influence. Status girlfriend most risky 39 times premarital sex. There is relationship and influence of 3 factors to premarital sex on adolescent child of Street of Pekanbaru Town. Suggestions for the formation of containers such as peer counselor and BKR (Youth Family Development) as a precautionary measure to increase the number of premarital sex incidents in the juveniles Street Children Pekanbaru

    Study of Absorption Loss Effects on Acoustic Wave Propagation in Shallow Water Using Different Empirical Models

    Efficient underwater acoustic communication and target locating systems require detailed study of acoustic wave propagation in the sea. Many investigators have studied the absorption of acoustic waves in ocean water and formulated empirical equations such as Thorp’s formula, Schulkin and Marsh model and Fisher and Simmons formula. The Fisher and Simmons formula found the effect associated with the relaxation of boric acid on absorption and provided a more detailed form of absorption coefficient which varies with frequency. However, no simulation model has made for the underwater acoustic propagation using these models. This paper reports the comparative study of acoustic wave absorption carried out by means of modeling in MATLAB. The results of simulation have been evaluated using measured data collected at Desaru beach on the eastern shore of Johor in Malaysia. The model has been used to determine sound absorption for given values of depth (D), salinity (S), temperature (T), pH, and acoustic wave transmitter frequency (f). From the results a suitable range, depth and frequency can be found to obtain best propagation link with low absorption loss

    Vision Based Approach to Sign Language Recognition

    We propose an algorithm for automatically recognizing some certain amount of gestures from hand movements to help deaf and dumb and hard hearing people. Hand gesture recognition is quite a challenging problem in its form. We have considered a fixed set of manual commands and a specific environment, and develop a effective, procedure for gesture recognition. Our approach contains steps for segmenting the hand region, locating the fingers, and finally classifying the gesture which in general terms means detecting, tracking and recognising. The algorithm is non-changing to rotations, translations and scale of the hand. We will be demonstrating the effectiveness of the technique on real imagery

    The Effects of “I Can Problem Solve Program” on Children’s Perspective Taking Abilities

    This study was conducted to determine the effects of I Can Problem Solve Program on preschool children’s perspective taking skills. Participants were 51 children who were attending two public preschool. In the study, pretest – posttest – permanence test control group desing was used. There were an experimental group and two control groups in the study. As data collection tool, “Perspective Taking Test for Children (PTC)” which was developed by Aslan and Köksal-Akyol [1] were utilized. Firstly, PTC was applied to children as pretest. Then “I Can Problem Solve Program” which was developed by Shure [2] and adapted to Turkish by Öğülmüş [3] was applied to children in experimental group. Children in control groups were attend the regular program. After the completing the program application PTC was implemented to experimental group and control groups as posttest. Finally, PTC was applied to experimental group as permanence test after a month of posttest. At the end of the study, it was determined that I Can Problem Solve Program had a significant impact on children’s perspective taking skills. There was a statistically significant difference between experimental group and control groups in posttest, while there was no difference between the groups in prettest. Children in experimental group performed better than children in control groups in posttest. Moreover, there was no significant difference in experimental group’s scores between posttest and permanence test scores

    Analysis of Inductance Gradient and Current Density Distribution Over Different Cross-section of Rails

    In a rail gun system the armature accelerated due to the Lorentz force caused by the current which is diffused in to the rails. The entire system depends on the inductance gradient of the rail which is directly connected to the accelerating performance and efficiency of railgun. Hence, the exact analysis of inductance gradient is extremely significant for the railgun design. Since short duration of current pulse is applied to the rails determination of inductance gradient is very difficult. The inductance gradient varies with the system parameters such as the dimensions of the rails and armature. And it can be calculated with analytical method and numerical methods. In this paper inductance gradient of the rail has been computed and compared with the different rail models using Ansoft Maxwell Eddy current solver which uses finite element technique to calculate the field distribution in a space. The current density, magnetic flux density, repulsive force acting on the rails also computed to analyze the performance of rail gun

    Computational Morphological Analysis of Yorùbá Language Words

    Nigeria official languages are English, Yorùbá, Igbo and Hausa. The focus of the study reported in this paper is to develop learning tool that can assist learners to learn the Yorùbá language using its alphabets. The study is critical to Yorùbá language, because of its endangerment. There is need to introduce different learning tools that can mitigate its extinction. A Yorùbá word perfect system was developed to assist people in learning the Yorùbá language. English and Yorùbá words formation are experimented using computational morphological approach (word formation). The theoretical framework considered Finite state automata (FSA) to realise different ways of combining the consonants and vowels to form word. Two to five letter words were considered. The system was designed and implemented using UML tools and python programming language.The system will teach the users on how the words are formed, and the number of syllables in each word. The user  need not to know how to tone mark word before he/she can use the system. Any word typed will be analysed according to its number of syllables. This approach produces representatives of all parts of speech (POS) of the two languages. It produces corpora for the two language

    Netload-Constrained Unit Commitment Considering Increasing Renewable Energy Penetration Levels: Impact of Generation Schedules and Operational Cost

    In the context of low carbon power systems, the penetration levels of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are expected to increase dramatically. In this regard, this paper investigates the maximum RES penetration level constrained by net load while considering an inflexible Unit Commitment (UC) model. To solve the UC problem, an enhanced priority list (EPL) based method is developed. In the proposed method, the plants were activated sequentially based on the operational price. The system constraint violations were repeatedly corrected until all system constraints (such as net load and spinning reserves) were satisfied. The proposed EPL method was efficient to achieve a near optimal solution under high shares of RES. Furthermore, the research work investigates three different scenarios representing penetration levels of 10% solar-only, 14.5% wind-only and 27.5% mixture of both solar and wind. The impact of each penetration level on the system scheduling and operational cost were analyzed in detail. The analysis presented shows that a potential operational cost savings of 21.6 /MW,20/MW, 20 /MW and 11.1 $/MW is feasible under each of the represented scenarios, respectively
