Control of polarimetric dimension of a tightly focused light field

    No full text
Tightly focused optical fields exhibit rich polarization characteristics, which hold great potential for both fundamental research and applications. In this work, we investigate the control of the polarimetric dimension of tightly focused fields. We propose a simple and effective method based on the joint modulation of the polarization state and spatial coherence of the incident beam. Specifically, by adjusting the polarization angle of a cylindrically polarized beam and tuning its spatial coherence width, the polarimetric dimension D—a physical quantity that characterizes the dimensionality of a polarization state—can be continuously tuned across its entire theoretical range, 1 ≤ D ≤ 3, at the focal point. We further elucidate the physical mechanisms behind this tunability, showing that the coherence governs the correlations among orthogonal field components, while the polarization state controls their relative intensities. These results offer new possibilities for tailoring the polarization structure of light in three dimensions and may find promising applications in the precise optical control of polarization-sensitive particles

Crafting the living cultural heritage in Finland

    No full text
Crafting is an important hobby for many Finns as revealed in a survey by the Finnish Craft Organization Taito.1 According to its findings, many Finns keep up the living crafts culture through their crafting activities. This is contrary to developments in many parts of the world in which various craft practices are at risk of disappearing because there are no longer practitioners to continue certain crafts. The purpose of this article is to reveal and analyse the mechanisms that safeguard the living cultural heritage of crafts in Finland
