    Segment Anything for Dendrites from Electron Microscopy

    Segmentation of cellular structures in electron microscopy (EM) images is fundamental to analyzing the morphology of neurons and glial cells in the healthy and diseased brain tissue. Current neuronal segmentation applications are based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and do not effectively capture global relationships within images. Here, we present DendriteSAM, a vision foundation model based on Segment Anything, for interactive and automatic segmentation of dendrites in EM images. The model is trained on high-resolution EM data from healthy rat hippocampus and is tested on diseased rat and human data. Our evaluation results demonstrate better mask quality compared to the original and other fine-tuned models, leveraging the features learned during training. This study introduces the first implementation of vision foundation models in dendrite segmentation, paving the path for computer-assisted diagnosis of neuronal anomalies

    Soil microhabitat conditions drive post-fire ecosystem multifunctionality changes in forests recovering from prescribed burning

    Background and aims A strong positive correlation between biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality has been widely observed. However, the effects of forest management fires on multifunctionality, the magnitude of multiple plant diversity metrics (taxonomic, phylogenetic, functional diversity, and species abundance), and microbial and soil biotic/abiotic variables within the comprehensive fire-impact framework remain poorly understood. Methods We examined multifunctionality changing patterns in the mid-growing season from 2019 to 2022—the first 4 years following low-intensity prescribed burning—over typical local coniferous and broad-leaved forests of Northeast China. Results We found that multifunctionality recovered ~ 4 years after burning. There was a significant decrease in soil nutrient support function (a decrease of ~ 14 times in coniferous forests and 8 times in broad-leaved forests) after the fires compared to unburned stands. Notably, prescribed burning strongly reversed the interfunctional relationship between trade-offs and synergies within the coniferous forests but mitigated it within the broad-leaved forests. Soil microhabitat conditions (bulk density and soil moisture), but not plant metrics, were the most critical parameters explaining fire-impact multifunctionality. Plant and microbial metrics affect waste decomposition and nutrient support functions. Conclusions Coniferous and broad-leaved forest ecosystem multifunctionality responds differently to prescribed burning; however, recovery in both could be facilitated by managing soil microhabitat conditions. This approach offers a practical and efficient way of mitigating the long-term impact of intentional fires aimed at reducing fuel loads on ecosystem functioning

    CHILDREN ABROAD: A RELATIONAL ANALYSIS OF FINNISH CHILD PROTECTION AND WELFARE IN TRANSNATIONAL CONTEXTS [CARELA] Interview data

    This is a description of interview data that is not open and reusable. The data were collected within the postdoctoral project CARELA (2020-2024) funded by the Finnish Research Council. This research project focused on child welfare, children’s rights and access to justice in transnational settings and mapped the diverse phenomena that should fall under the umbrella of transnational child welfare but often go under the radar of legal and social work practices. Additionally, the project examined how individuals are affected by the contingent and changing social relations that simultaneously condition and emerge in the field of transnational child welfare, how different actors view the adequacy of the support provided by the state, and how bureaucrats use and make sense of law in different settings. Interview data: A total of 67 qualitative semi-structured interviews (Galletta 2013) or teller-focused interviews (Bredal et al. 2022, Hydén 2014), of which 52 were recorded and transcribed, plus 11 interviews related to social issues within the Finnish community in Spain (total 78 interviews) and several informal interviews.
