    Sisäympäristöissä niin työpaikoilla kuin asunnoissakin esiintyy erilaisia epäpuhtauksia ja muita tekijöitä, jotka voivat aiheuttaa ohimeneviä ärsytys- tai yleisoireita tai lisätä riskiä sairastua kroonisesti. Kosteusvauriot lisäävät erityisesti hengitystieoireiden ja -sairauksien riskiä. Lisäriskin aiheuttajana on pidetty kosteusvaurion mahdollistamaa mikrobikasvua, mutta viime vuosikymmeninä kertynyt tutkimusnäyttö ei tue tätä näkemystä ja syytekijät ovat edelleen tuntemattomia. Epäiltäessä kosteusvauriota ensisijainen tutkimus on rakennustekninen tarkastus. Jos kosteusvaurio on todettavissa aistinvaraisesti tai kosteusmittauksin, mikrobien tarkemmasta määrittämisestä ei ole lisähyötyä: oleskelu- ja työtilojen kosteusvauriota pidetään lain mukaan mahdollisena terveyshaittana riippumatta mikrobien määrästä tai laadusta. Terveysperusteisten raja-arvojen määrittämiseksi kosteusvaurioiden terveysvaikutuksia määrittävistä tekijöistä tarvitaan lisätietoa. Ydinasia
