Framing the Future: How Temporal Perspectives Influence Perceptions of Tensions of Pragmatic Sustainability Paradoxes

    No full text
Pursuing sustainability presents entrepreneurs with a strategic tension between planet and profit. How can competing environmental and financial demands be reconciled? We examine whether temporal perspective shapes how entrepreneurs perceive this tension. What is the role of the time horizon in the perception of sustainability as a synergistic opportunity or a contradictory tradeoff regarding financial performance? This study explores temporal framing's impact on entrepreneurs' cognitive perceptions of sustainability tensions, hypothesizing that temporal distance shapes perceived paradoxicalness, influencing strategic responses. Analyzing 353 US entrepreneurs through an experimental vignette, it examines the cognitive mechanisms linking time horizon, paradox perceptions, and strategic responses, positing that an entrepreneur's temporal framing acts as an individual-level factor affecting perceived paradoxicalness. The findings aim to clarify boundary conditions for paradox theory and reveal contextual factors enabling a both/and approach. By integrating temporal construal theory with entrepreneurship, this research extends the understanding of how temporal perspectives affect paradox perceptions, addressing the need for more nuanced insights into conditions diminishing versus strengthening perceived interrelatedness of paradoxes. Additionally, it highlights the practical implications of understanding how cognitive framing shapes paradox perceptions, offering insights into balancing trade-offs constructively and the potential of a long-term temporal perspective in perceiving sustainability as an opportunity rather than a constraint
