    Impact of Aggregate Gradation on Airfield (P-401) Asphalt Mixture

    The Federal Aviation Administrations’ (FAA) current asphalt mixture gradation specification limits are finer, and the allowable ranges are more restrictive than control points for similar nominal maximum aggregate size mixtures within the Superpave mix design methodology. Ensuring the gradation specification limits requirements are allowing asphalt mix designers to produce the best performing, most economical, and lowest carbon footprint mixtures will safeguard airfield pavements into the future and were goals of this research.This research utilized three material sources, one each from Arizona, Nevada and Washington to develop mix designs using the Baily Method inside the P-401 gradation specification limits requirements (in spec) and outside the P-401 gradation specification limits requirements (out spec). In and out of spec mix designs within each source were developed with the same asphalt cement (AC) and volume of effective binder. The rutting, moisture susceptibility, top-down cracking, low temperature cracking, durability (Cantabro mass loss) and permeability performance of each mixture was evaluated. However, broadening the FAA P-401 gradation specification limits did not compromise mixture volumetric requirements or affect the rutting performance, moisture susceptibility, durability or the permeability of the mixtures from the three states. This work was part of a national effort by three laboratories including the Western Regional Superpave lab at UNR, the National Center for Asphalt Technology at Auburn University and the Heritage Research Group in Indiana. The final proposed adjustments to the gradation specification limits are anticipated to take place in the near future with the goal of providing the least restrictive gradation specification limits possible while maintaining the mixture performance expected of FAA P-401 mixtures

    Unlocking Value: Economic Modeling and Optimization Strategies for Heap Leach Pads

    This paper was presented at the Heap Leach Solutions Conference, October 19-21, 2025, Sparks, Nevada.Heap leaching is a widely used hydrometallurgical technique for extracting metals from low-grade ores, yet conventional practices often leave significant metal unrecovered within the leach pads. This paper explores the potential for optimizing heap leach pad performance through technological, operational, and modeling improvements. We review both commercially implemented and emerging strategies-including enhanced irrigation systems, ore agglomeration, injection techniques, dynamic stacking based on ore geochemistry, and real-time monitoring tools-that aim to increase metal recovery and process efficiency. Additionally, we assess gaps in current reporting frameworks that may underrepresent the value of recoverable metal in existing leach operations. An economic modeling framework is proposed to evaluate the cost-benefit trade-offs of implementing such optimizations, accounting for productivity gains, operational complexity, environmental impacts, and potential returns on investment. Through a synthesis of best practices and new research directions, we outline a roadmap for advancing heap leach pad management. The findings support the broader goal of improving resource efficiency, maximizing metal recovery, and extending the economic life of mine operations through smarter, data-informed leaching strategies. This work provides a foundation for future innovations in heap leach optimization and more accurate valuation of metal assets across the mining industry

    Design and Synthesis of water-soluble P,N-Ligands for coordination to Ruthenium centers: Applications in Aqueous atom transfer radical addition and aqueous nitrile hydration

    This dissertation investigates the ability of the phosphine, 1,3,5-triaza-7- phosphaadamantane (PTA) and derivatives to serve as either a monodentate phosphine ligands or bidentate P,N-ligands coordinated to metal catalysts. “Upper-rim” modified PTA derivatives were coordinated to an η5 -cyclopentadienyl ruthenium center. These complexes were synthesized and characterized by 1H, 13C{1H}, 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy, 2D- NMR (HSQC, HMBC, and COSY), and ESI-MS. All complexes bearing η5 -cyclopentadienyl moiety were evaluated as catalysts for aqueous atom transfer radical addition at 60 °C. These complexes promoted aqueous ATRA in good conversions and moderate TOFs. [CpRu(CH3CN)2 (PTACHPhNH(p C6H4OMe)]PF6 showed a TOF of 12.5 h-1 in acetonitrile in 6 h with a 75% conversion. PTA derivatives were synthesized utilizing tetrafluoroboric acid to offer a less coordinating anion and achieve a P,N-ligand capable of binding through both the phosphorous and nitrogen at the same time. The P(CH2NH3BF4 )3 derivative was coordinated to different η6 -arene derivatives. These complexes were characterized by 1H, 13C{1H}, 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy, 2D- NMR (HSQC, HMBC, and COSY), and ESI-MS. The η6 -arene ruthenium complexes and the free ligand (P(CH2NH3BF4 )3 ) with RuCl3 were evaluated for aqueous nitrile hydration at 100 °C at 1 mol % catalyst. Both the in-situ and pre-made catalysts were active for nitrile hydration. (η6–C6H5CH3 )RuCl2P(CH2NH3BF4 )3 showed a TOF of 2.75 h-1 over 24 h

    Affluenza: Scale Construction and Validation, Association with Dark Personality Traits, and Potential Role in Perpetration of White Collar Crime

    Affluenza, the confluence of affluence and influenza, refers to heightened entitlement among the economically wealthy leading them to fulfill their needs through harmful means without caring about the consequences to others as a result of these methods. Although an older concept, Affluenza has gained popularity through the past decade owing to it being used as a defense in courts to gain leniency for wealthy perpetrators of crimes. However, not much is empirically known about the construct outside of consumerism and materialism literature, particularly in context of the role of economic privilege in perpetrating crime and harming others. While some measures for Affluenza exist within consumerism literature, they have several methodological issues, and do not capture the full breadth of the construct. Thus, the first aim of this dissertation was to broaden the conceptualization of Affluenza and construct a valid and reliable measure to assess this variable. Study 1 therefore focused on constructing and validating an Affluenza scale. I developed preliminary items for Affluenza using literature review, expert inputs, and interviews, and conducted exploratory factor analysis (N = 181) to understand the structure of the Affluenza scale. Further, this dissertation aimed to understand the contexts in which Affluenza manifests, as not everyone who is economically privileged will experience Affluenza. Thus, in Study 2, I first undertook confirmatory factor analysis (N = 498) to further verify the structure of the developed Affluenza measure. I then investigated the moderating role of the Dark Triad traits of Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy between Affluenza and high socioeconomic status. It was found that high socioeconomic status predicts Affluenza irrespective of the presence of the Dark Triad traits. Finally, this dissertation aimed to explore the criminality aspect of Affluenza, and whether it actually leads people from high socioeconomic statuses to perpetrate crime. Thus, given the financial nature of Affluenza, the third aim of this study was to explore the potential role of Affluenza within perpetration of white collar crime. Thus, in Study 3 (N = 213), I investigated and found that Affluenza partially mediated the relationship between high socioeconomic status and perpetration of white collar crime. Further, I also found that moderate and high levels of Machiavellianism and narcissism, and high level of psychopathy moderated the effects of high socioeconomic status on white collar crime via Affluenza.
