    Memetic memory as vital conduits of troublemakers in digital culture

    Recent fears of data capitalism and colonialism often argue using implicit assumptions about cybernetic technology’s ability to automate data about culture. As such, the level of data granularity made possible by cybernetic engineering can be used to dominate society and culture. Here we unpack these implicit assumptions about the datafication of culture through memes, which both act as cultural data and cultural memory. Using Alexander Galloway’s critical method of protocological analysis and descriptions of media tactics, we respond to fears of cybernetic domination. Protocols – the source by which cybernetic technologies enable automated datafication – enables us to respond to fears with optimism, and it further enables a more extensive development of how memetic memory functions. Our development shows that memetic memory often emerges before cybernetic datafication, offering moments of resistance from cybernetic domination. Further, this development enables a vitalist development of memetic memory, borrowing from Bergsonian theory and related contemporary media theories. Such a work contributes by providing cybernetic context in which culture, characterized through memes, resists cybernetic domination. In the process of this contribution, it also contributes a novel theory of memetic memory. Inspired by recent posthuman new media theory, we provide a novel reading of Richard Dawkins’ genetically inspired meme as well as Limor Shifman’s notion of memetic ‘stance’. Taken together, we contribute the beginnings of a memetic theory of vitalism which speaks more readily with critical cybernetic discourse

    “Dead or Alive?” Regression Imputation of the Binary End-of-Event Outcome Indicator for the NEMSIS Public Research Dataset

    Objectives: Recent studies address missing survival outcomes in the National Emergency Medical Services Information System (NEMSIS), a system that stores and shares standardized EMS data from U.S. States and Territories. This study aspired to improve imputed EMS outcome accuracy and establish benchmarks for common medical emergencies treated in prehospital care. Methods: This retrospective cohort study of ground-transported EMS patients with definitive end-of-EMS-event outcomes, based on dataset years 2017 to 2023, predicted the probability of “dead” or “alive” status using logistic regression. K-fold cross-validation assessed over-fitting and internal generalization. Threshold optimization and machine learning classification metrics enabled comparison with a recently proposed imputation method (“MLB” method) and its NEMSIS implementation. Published NEMSIS case definitions framed accuracy benchmarks computed for common medical emergencies. Results: Based on 1,324,681 patient events, regression imputation improved the accuracy of mortality outcome imputation (“dead” category accuracy, True Positive Rate, TPR) by 15 percentage points over the MLB method, and by 7 points over its NEMSIS adaption: It correctly identified 2,806 and 1,266 more patient deaths, respectively, while eliminating prediction dependency on a retired NEMSIS element (eDisposition.12). TPR for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest with attempted resuscitation, opioid overdose, and STEMI, improved by 19 to 25 (8 to 13) percentage points over MLB (NEMSIS case definition). The study computed accuracy benchmarks for 40 medical emergency categories, including all case definitions published by NEMSIS. Conclusions: This work improves and establishes benchmarks for imputed EMS outcome accuracy and contributes to the utility of NEMSIS datasets for clinical studies of EMS interventions and operations. Assessment and reporting of TPR is recommended whenever applying any survival imputation method to NEMSIS data, including the NEMSIS case definition for patient death. More attention by EMS clinicians to complete documentation of target NEMSIS elements can improve future studies that consider patient survival as an outcome

    Democratic Transition and Migration and Refugee Policy in Tunisia and in Comparative Perspective

    What is the impact of democratic transition processes on migration and refugee policy? This mixed-method dissertation examines this question through both a qualitative case study of Tunisia during and after its recent democratic period (2011-2021) and a statistical analysis of regime change and refugee rights in 70 Global South states. This dissertation presents the surprising finding that in Tunisia, the locus of migration policymaking changed slightly after democratization because Tunisia’s decentralization process allowed for local-level actors to exercise increased autonomy over issues relating to migrant and refugee health and integration. It also finds that, in cross-national perspective, democratic transitions are associated with short-term reductions in refugee rights, despite the finding that democracy itself is associated with greater rights for refugees. Finally, this dissertation suggests that a democratic “transition effect” can complement current debates in the migration studies literature about the relationship between regime type and migration and refugee policy

    Optimizing NBA Roster Construction

    This study aims to quantify the effect that complementary player types have on team success in the National Basketball Association. Using cluster analysis, player-seasons are redefined from their traditional basketball positions to better encompass the roles that players play. For the 10 seasons of data, the best player for each of the 30 teams in the league is determined and teams are grouped based on the cluster of their best player. Ordinary Least Squares regressions are performed to test what player types fit together best. The results of this study show the importance of complementary workers to a firm’s success

    Gen Z + Scientific Information Literacy —\u3e A Catalyst for Change

    In the last decade, the traditional college-aged population (ages 18–22) has shifted from Millennials to Gen Z. This generational shift has necessitated pedagogical change, as discovered w/the changing response to a long-used lesson on scientific information literacy. The lesson, which had been used since 2013, specified a pre-class assignment of reading three different types of scientific articles & an in-class discussion about various aspects of the articles, led by the sciences research instruction librarian. Up until about 2018/2019, students had readily responded to the in-class discussion questions w/answers from their pre-class work. However, at that time, & especially upon the return to in-person instruction in Fall 2021, it became noticeable that students were less & less willing to speak up during the in-class discussion, & the discussion was taking more & more class time as the sciences research instruction librarian tried to draw responses from the students. Additionally, a change in the campus’s LMS starting in Fall 2023 resulted in many students not receiving the pre-class assignment, requiring on-the-fly in-class lesson plan readjustments. Consequently, the sciences research instruction librarian decided to revamp the lesson plan for Spring 2024, eliminating the pre-class assignment & changing the in-class discussion time into small-group student presentations of half a dozen different types of science-related articles. The results were very encouraging, w/students readily participating & the exercise being accomplished in a timely manner, leaving an appropriate amount of time for the other class objectives
