    A Menu and its Implications on Filipino and American Culture

    I analyzed a collection of menus collected from around 1950s to 1960s from the Kay Shaw Nelson Papers. I decided to focus my research around a menu from the Philippines. From here, I analyzed the graphic design and word choice of the menu to come to the conclusion that it was targeted towards an American or English-speaking tourist audience. Then, I researched the history of food tourism in the Philippines and how it helped flourish the country’s economy. Although the Filipino menu from Nelson’s collection inspired the brunt of my studies, I also noticed the small amount of Asian menus compared to European menus. This transitioned my research towards why American tourists favored Europe over Asia in the 1950s: because of similar cultures, languages, better relations post-World War II, better developed hotel systems, access to transportation, and racial tension towards Asia. Noticing this aversion towards Asia, I wanted to see how this prejudice would carry onto the American culture and the publication structure. Many stories Nelson pitched surrounding Asian cuisine were denied publication. However, in the 1970s, the United States witnessed a cultural boom of embracing different cuisines. International recipes were entering mainstream media, and Americanized versions of foods from certain Asian countries, such as China and India, became prevalent across the country. However, Filipino food still has not had a huge entrance to the food scene of the states as of the 2020s

    Exploration of Silhouettes: 1960s through 2010s

    I did my research project on fashion and trends and observed how they change over time. I know from previous knowledge that trends come in cycles, so I used this knowledge to choose other time periods that would have similar trends. The collection of photos I looked at from the archive is from the 1960s and shows a runway show for a charity event. Since this is from the 1960s, I looked at Vogue Runway, which is an archive website that has many high fashion shows going back to the 80s, to collect photos from shows from the 90s and 2010s. The main themes I noticed were repeating was how the silhouette of a tighter-fitting skirt and looser-fitting clothing around the waist. I also noticed how pantsuits and matching sets were common in these time periods, especially in the 60s and the 90s. The 1960s was a decade that was known for change such as the Civil Rights Movement and the second-wave feminist movement from the 60s to the 70s. The 50s have very different silhouettes from the 60s, from the hourglass figure to the flowy skirt. This was called The New Look created by Christian Dior in 1947. These new silhouettes introduced in the 60s could be a result of the political change going on. Women were getting more rebellious and started to wear pants and not wearing the ideal hourglass figure-hugging dresses

    Recent criticism of large language models (LLM) and generative AI have focused on the way that these applications are little more than Stochostic Parrots—technological devices that generate seemingly intelligible statements but do not know and cannot understand a word of what they say. If the terms of these evaluations sound familiar, they should. They are rooted in foundational concepts regarding language and technology that have been definitive of Western systems of knowing since the time of Plato. The current crop of critical correctives and well-intended LLM hype-reduction efforts reproduce—or one might be tempted to say “parrot”—this ancient wisdom. And it works, precisely because it just sounds like good common sense. But that’s the problem. This presentation takes aim at this largely unquestioned theoretical framework, identifies its inherent limitations and inabilities to accurately understanding the opportunities and challenges of LLMs, and conclude by providing a more robust method for responding to and taking responsibility for these technological innovations

    The Evolution of the Pan African Women’s Organization (PAWO): A Case Study of Women’s Involvement in Pan-Africanism

    The thesis investigates how PAWO has engaged with and defined African cultural values and practices, while also examining the social and political challenges it has faced and its prospects as a social and political organization. The research explores the formation of PAWO during liberation movements in Africa, when women played pivotal roles in the creation of new nations. As the continent transitioned from liberation movements to government development, PAWO underwent significant transformations influenced by socioeconomic events and social developments. Key factors shaping PAWO\u27s evolution include the emergence of femnocrats as women gained formal political roles, a decline in local women\u27s participation, and ongoing political discussions and conflicts related to gender roles and sexuality. The thesis aims to address two central research questions: the establishment of PAWO and its evolution over time. By charting the historical trajectory of PAWO from its origins as the All African Women\u27s Conference to its current form, the study identifies significant epochs that have shaped the organization\u27s development. The research conceptualizes PAWO as a Pan-African organization, drawing on the perspectives of scholars like Sylvia Tamale and Grace Bantebya Kyomuhendo. In summary, the thesis argues that PAWO emerged during Africa\u27s liberation struggles, with women actively participating in nation-building efforts. As the continent transitioned to more established state systems, PAWO underwent substantial transformations.     Broadband and Multiband Designs for Antenna Feeds and Arrays

    The designs for broadband and multiband antenna feeds, specifically for antenna array applications, are fabricated and evaluated to optimize the performance of these arrays. A specific power divider functionality is expanded upon for layout flexibility and amplitude tapering. A method of multiplexing antennas is used to overcome limitations caused by element spacing in arrays. A planar power divider that has wide bandwidth performance (at least 30% BW) and uses resistors that are tied to ground is analyzed. This particular power divider has previously only been solved for the equal split 2-way case. This work simplifies the structure of the original design and then leverages that simplicity to expand the capability of the power divider for N-way, unequal spilt and wider bandwidth cases. A 4-way power divider, an unequal split power divider with a 2:1 power split ratio and wider band power divider with 50% bandwidth are all simulated and experimentally verified with fabricated prototypes. However, for wider bandwidth arrays (or multiband array covering a wide bandwidth) the spacing between antenna elements becomes an issue since it can only be optimized at a single frequency. A method to overcome this limitation is presented. This method uses separate antenna elements multiplexed with isolation circuits. These antennas are treated as a single element for the design of an antenna feed. This is demonstrated with a 3 band 1D scanning array prototype of patch antennas that is validated through testing. The concept is then expanded for 2D scanning by using frequency scanning antennas. Since frequency scanning antennas do not have a sufficient stop band needed for multiplexing, an antenna with improved out of band rejection is designed for use in this type of array. A prototype of this antenna is fabricated and validated through testing. This practical research is supported by extensive simulations and validation through prototypes. The measurements show good agreement with the simulations for the expanded power dividers showing their potential to be used in antenna feed networks. The multiband antenna array measurements show good agreement with simulation, proving it to be a good solution for array deployments. The frequency scanning antenna with improved out of band rejection measurements also shows good agreement with simulation, proving its potential to expand the previous multiband array to 2D scanning
