Beyond the Game: The Super Bowl’s Lasting Legacy in New Orleans
This paper explores the enduring relationship between New Orleans and the Super Bowl, exam-ining how the event has shaped the city’s economic, cultural, and civic identity. Having host-ed the championship eleven times, New Orleans has transformed each Super Bowl into more than a sporting spectacle. It has become a catalyst for urban renewal, economic investment, and community pride. Through analysis of historical records, media reports, and economic data, this study traces the evolution of the city’s hosting legacy from Tulane Stadium to the Caesars Superdome. It investigates how Super Bowl events have spurred infrastructure development, generated millions in local revenue, and fostered cultural expression rooted in New Orleans’s unique traditions. The research also highlights tensions surrounding equity and inclusion, par-ticularly in how economic benefits are distributed across communities. Ultimately, New Orle-ans’s Super Bowl legacy reflects both resilience and reinvention by demonstrating how sport can serve as a platform for recovery, identity, and celebration in one of America’s most storied cities
Genocide in Guatemala: The Massacres In the Ixil Region
This paper examines the state-sponsored genocide against Indigenous communities in Guatemala’s Ixil and Ixcán regions between 1980 and 1983, analyzing how geographical, ethnic, and political factors con-tributed to the multiple massacres committed in these regions. By tracing the historical trajectory from the 1954 CIA-backed coup that overthrew President Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán to the counterinsurgency op-erations under General Efraín Ríos Montt, this research highlights how Cold War geopolitics, entrenched racism, and disputes over Mayan territories converged to justify mass extermination. Drawing on de-classified military documents, historical archives, and scholarly works on Latin American conflict and mem-ory, this study challenges the “Dos Demonios” thesis, emphasizing Indigenous agency and resistance (Foss 2022). Ultimately, this paper argues that the Guatemalan genocide was not a byproduct of civil war but a deliberate campaign to eliminate Indigenous identity and autonomy in the name of “national security.
UBQLN2 Puncta Formation Dependency on Expression, Domain Structure, and Heat Stress
Ubiquilin 2 (UBQLN2) is a protein that recognizes ubiquitinated substrates and transports them to degradation machinery such as the proteasome. This pathway is crucial for protein quality control and disruptions in it may lead to neurodegenerative diseases such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). UBQLN2 can coalesce to form puncta within the cell. Puncta are still liquid droplets but are separate from the dilute surrounding. It has been shown in vitro that certain domains of the UBQLN2 protein are crucial for its ability to form droplets. However, the influence of these droptlets within cellular UBQLN2 is less understood. The following research investigates puncta formation modu-lation by UBQLN2 expression, domain structure, experiment time, and environmental heat stress. Information about the fluorescently tagged UBQLN2 brightness and area are used to measure the percentage of the cell covered by puncta or Percent Puncta by Area (PPA). The data demonstrate the expression dependence of UBQLN2. Under control conditions, when the cell expresses more of the protein, more puncta are formed. Certain variants of the UBQLN2 protein increase punc-ta formation expression dependence while others almost eliminate it. Output measurements also demonstrate that heat stress modulates UBQLN2 puncta formation for most of the protein variants. For some variants, heat stress increases puncta formation while other variants show less puncta dependency with heat and time. The combined results demonstrate the importance of multiple segments of UBQLN2 on its cellular function and how these components function during stress.
Is AI Replacing Human Mental Health Professionals?
An increasing number of people are turning to generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools and AI-assisted chatbots to manage mental health concerns. This data slice presents findings from a national survey of U.S. adults aged 18-49 (N = 1,805) conducted in October 2025. Among respondents, 35.2% reported using AI tools more than once a week for mental health support. Among those who had ever seen a human mental health professional, 28.4% reported visiting human providers less often since beginning to use AI for the same purpose. The findings suggest that a subset of users may be using AI to replace, rather than supplement, human counseling
A Spatial Understanding of Calcium Carbonate Saturation Along the Eastern Coast of Aotearoa New Zealand: Pacific Oysters Case Study
As ocean acidification continues to become a pressing issue as a result of climate change and increased carbon uptake in the ocean, many species, including the Pacific Oyster, are at risk. This may be due to a decrease in pH levels and, therefore, a decreased calcite saturation state, which in turn hinders their ability to grow and maintain their calcium carbonate shell. The aquaculture in Aotearoa, the Māori word for New Zealand, has become an important socio-economic component for both Māori and Pākehā Aotearoa New Zealand (ANZ) citizens. The following research geographically focuses on the eastern coast of ANZ around customary Māori fisheries, de-termining the pH, alkalinity, and saturation state in order to determine the health of the environment, also using offshore samples as a source for inshore/offshore comparison. This research aims to identify areas of potential greatest vulnerability and, therefore, areas in need of improved monitoring. We have concluded that the site lo-cated east of the South Island has the lowest calcite saturation state, significantly different from the Bay of Plenty and the offshore samples
Historic Scrapbooks in Libraries and Archives – the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Anybody who works in or with library and archival collections knows that historic scrapbooks are some of the most engaging and personal materials found in our collections. However, they are also one of the most challenging to care for and provide access to. This talk offers a brief history of scrapbooks, their structure and materials, as well as examples of what makes them so special. Jennifer Hain Teper then offers a series of case studies of how several challenging scrapbooks and photo albums from the Gwendolyn Brooks Papers were approached for conservation and digitization as part of a Save America’s Treasures Grant at the University of Illinois Libraries from 2020-2023.
Jennifer Hain Teper serves as the Velde Professor and Preservation Librarian at the University of Illinois Libraries overseeing conservation, collections care, digital preservation and digitization services throughout the library system. Before her current position began in 2009, she served as the head of conservation at the University of Illinois libraries from 2001-2008. Jennifer graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in August of 2000 with a MLIS and Certificate of Advanced Study in the Conservation and Preservation of Library and Archival Materials. She teaches several preservation and conservation related courses in the Graduate School of Information Science at the University of Illinois and also serves as an instructor at the Center for Collections Care. Her current research interests focus on the prioritization of preservation actions in academic and research libraries relative to holdings in shared print repositories and DEIA efforts within conservation education. She is a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation
