Dynamics and energetics relevant to multiphoton excitation via Rydberg and Ion-pair molecular and atomic states
The research focused on the multiphoton dynamics and energetics for the HI, CH3I, CH3Br,
and C2H2 molecules by using one- and two-color mass-resolved (MR) resonance enhanced
multiphoton ionization (REMPI) and/or velocity map imaging (VMI) in association with
REMPI.
MR-REMPI experiments for HI revealed new Rydberg and ion-pair states as well as
perturbation cases due to interactions between electronic states, which appeared as line-shift
(LS), line-intensity (LI), and line-width (LW) alternations in REMPI spectra.
CH3I multiphoton dynamic studies by VMI-REMPI revealed the formation of excited
Rydberg states of iodine atoms (I**) along with CH3(X) to be the significant formation
channel in the two-photon excitation region of 55 700 to 70 000 cm-1
. Rather unusual
observation, this was found to occur via three-photon excitation to superexcited molecular
states (CH3I
#
).
Iodine atomic lines in REMPI spectra for I+
signals in the two-photon excitation region of
76 680 -82 620 cm-1 for CH3I and HI revealed autoionization of superexcited iodine atoms
(I
#
). Several new spectral peaks were assigned, and the autoionization mechanisms were
identified.
Two-color MR-REMPI / pump and probe experiments were designed and developed to
perform photofragmentation experiments and spectra analysis of fragment species. The
technique was successfully applied for CH3Br. Further work is in preparation.
Multiphoton breakdown of acetylene (C2H2) was studied by VMI-REMPI via molecular
Rydberg states. The number of photofragmentation channels, involving the formation of
ground and excited state fragments for two-, three- and four-photon excitations prior
to photoionization, were identified.Rannsóknirnar fjölluðu um ljósrof og orkueiginleika sameindanna HI, CH3I, CH3Br og

Slit-og núningseiginleikar og tæringarhegðun húðunarefna fyrir jarðhitanýtingu
The increasing global demand for renewable energy has resulted in the increased
exploration of geothermal energy resources, which presents corrosion and wear challenges. The objective of the PhD project is to investigate the friction, wear and corrosion behavior of available and novel coatings designed to add wear and corrosion resistance to steels currently used in geothermal applications. The coatings include tungsten carbide (WC)
cermet-, nickel alloy based-, amorphous iron based-, graphene oxide based-, electroless
nickel-phosphorus duplex-, and high entropy alloy (HEA) based- coatings. The results
demonstrated that the coatings’ hardness influenced abrasion and wear resistance, but the surface roughness complicated friction and sliding behavior. Further autoclave testing
revealed that, the wear-resistant coatings acted as a physical barrier in the test solution,
preventing steel corrosion. However, deviations were dependent on the coating microstructure, physical properties, and the chemistry of the test environment, promoting
localized corrosion effects. In the 120 °C water test, all the coatings were protective by
resisting substrate corrosion. After liquid/vapor phase exposure in the challenging
environment (i.e., 250 °C with H2S/CO2), the coatings were subjected to either internal
attack, surface deposits or substrate corrosion. This work revealed good corrosion
resistance of the wear resistant HVOF developed HEA in all test environments and thus
encouraging industrial exploitation of the coating in CO2/H2S-containing fluid commonly
encountered in geothermal fields. The findings established systems that produce suitable
corrosion- and wear- resistant coatings for targeted applications that can be incorporated
into early project phases in geothermal energy exploration.Aukin eftirspurn á heimsvísu eftir endurnýjanlegri orku hefur leitt til aukinnar nýtingu á

Doctoral thesis is closed until August 23rd 2024 due to publication of drafted papers. The scope of this study is processing onboard fresh fish trawlers, focusing on bleeding and cooling processes and the effects on product quality and shelf-life. In recent years there has been a shift from less valuable frozen products to higher value fresh fish export of fillets and loins from Iceland. This development in the fresh fish fillets markets was made possible by technological improvements in the value chain in the last decade. However, the primary onboard processing has been a weak link in terms of research studies in the value chain of groundfish. This research gap in the value chain and the renewal of the Icelandic fleet led to the current study, in which the objective is to evaluate primary processing onboard fresh fish trawlers focusing on the bleeding and cooling processes. The study evaluation is aimed at the effects of new onboard processes, to provide design criteria for further technical innovation and provide measurement results that producers can use as references regarding shelf-life and quality indicators. This is done with onboard research on time and temperature control, variable bleeding conditions and methods, different cooling and superchilling methods, and on superchilled storage with focus on the effects on shelf-life and product quality.
The results of the study show that the waiting time in the reception hold is the main deciding factor regarding fillet colour. As for the method of bleeding and gutting fish, the two-step process of bleeding and gutting showed only marginally better results in terms of fillet colour, compared to direct gutting. Results of bleeding media conditions show the effects of time, temperature, water flow and recirculation on fillet quality, and indicate that pump flow recirculation has more effect on bleeding efficiency than water replacement. Comparison of newly developed onboard primary processing systems to older ones confirms improvements in terms of uniformity of both bleeding and cooling. The study results show that it is not advisable to store whole ungutted cod in onboard RSW for more than 24 hours. The onboard superchilling of whole gutted fish reduces some spoilage factors but superchilled storage after fillet processing was found to be more important for extended shelf-life. Simulation of a superchilled value chain from catch to market indicates that the freshness period and shelf-life can be extended by up to four days, compared to traditional ice cooling of whole fish and storage of fillets at 1 °C. The study outcomes can provide technical developers with premise and requirements for further technical solutions needed to deliver fish of the highest possible quality and with a maximum shelf-life to secondary processing. The study was conducted as part of the research projects “Redesign of demersal wet-fish trawler processing decks” and “Fast-cooling for fast-fishing boats”, both supported by the Icelandic Technology Development Fund (grants number 142667-0611 and 164866-0611) and the AVS R&D Fund of the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture in Iceland (grants number R 15 068-14 and R 19 024-17)
An environmental life cycle cost assessment of the costs of deep enhanced geothermal systems – The case studies of Reykjanes, Iceland and Vendenheim, France
Pre-print / Óritrýnt handrit
© 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.Environmental life cycle costing (ELCC) is a tool which aggregates five categories of monetary costs across a project's life cycle: investment, operation, maintenance, end-of-life, and externalities. This paper summarises the results from the first two ELCC studies involving deep enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). The ReCiPe method was used to transform life cycle impact factors into economic costs for externalities. The two case studies are the pilot EGS project in Reykjanes, Iceland and the Vendenheim co-generation plant in France. The ELCC of the Reykjanes project is estimated in the range 14.47–15.78 million euros, with investment and well drilling projected to constitute 83% of these amounts. An ELCC in the range 91.90–113.97 million euros is estimated for Vendenheim, with the production plant, well drilling, and operations and maintenance costs accounting for the majority. The levelized costs of energy associated with Vendenheim (mean Є45.0/MWh/year) and Reykjanes (mean Є16.5/MWh/year) are at the lower end of the range normally reported for geothermal power projects. Although the case studies cannot be directly compared since Reykjanes involves the drilling of a single well and Vendenheim a co-generation plant and two wells, the outcomes suggest that deep EGS projects may involve cost-savings compared to conventional geothermal power ventures
Clemente Rebora tra il 1913 e il 1923: Uno studio sull'epistolario e l'opera poetica
Abstract
This dissertation focuses above all on Clemente Rebora’s epistolary: that of 1916, 1920-1923 and 1913-1914 respectively. In Chapter I, the analysis concerns the period, following a war accident and its very serious consequences on his psychophysical health, of Rebora’s return home from the battle front. He develops a particular condition of anxiety that causes him to abandon creative and public writing. The scrutiny of several letters that Rebora writes in 1916 shows how they seem to be endowed with a sort of metapsychical power and would have the purpose of guarding and protecting from death the addressees who still fight in the trenches (in particular his brother Piero and his friend Angelo Monteverdi). The psychological attitude that Rebora assumes in this period towards “private” writing will also tend in the future to make him consider literary work, in particular poetry, less and less important. In the second period taken into consideration (about 1920-1923), corresponding to Chapter II, Rebora’s approach to oriental disciplines (yoga and Buddhism) and his in-depth studies of the works of Giuseppe Mazzini is investigated. In 1922-1923 Rebora publishes the translation and commentary of Gogol’s The Overcoat, the translation and commentary of the anonymous Indian short story Gianardana and the collection of nine poems that make up the Canti anonimi. A cross-comparison has been made between letters and commentaries and between commentaries and poems with a double purpose: to clarify, on the one hand, the ideological and political position of Rebora, who in this period develops Mazzini’s idea according to which humanity is entering a “new era” of collective faith; on the other hand, to provide a non-traditional critical interpretation of Dall’imagine tesa, the most representative and even most debated lyric of Canti anonimi. In Chapter III, the epistolary from the period immediately following the publication of Rebora’s first poetry collection (Frammenti lirici, 1913) is read and analyzed above all from the morphological (syntactic-grammatical) point of view and compared with the stylistic features of the Frammenti lirici and with those of the four articles that Rebora writes for the cultural and literary journal «La Voce» in the same period. The formal analogies found in these three different textual genres allow the affirmation that in Rebora there is a sort of unitary “psychological etymology”, which on the level of linguistic construction seems to move the poet and the columnist, the lyrist and the intellectual in the same way. Chapter IV continues and integrates the analysis made in the previous chapter and compares the poetry of the Frammenti lirici with that of two other “new” and contemporary poets of Rebora, namely Piero Jahier and Giovanni Boine, in order to verify to what extent Rebora’s poetic language is actually original and how much it is rather emblematic of an era. The result of the survey confirms the prerogatives of originality of the Frammenti lirici’s poetry, and also highlights in it higher standards of spontaneity than that found in the lyrics of the other two poets
Multidisciplinary Pain Rehabilitation Programs in Iceland: An Exploration and Description of the Short-term and Long-term Effects
Aim: The overall aim of the thesis was to explore and describe the short- and
long-term effects of three multidisciplinary pain rehabilitation programs on
pain severity and pain interference and the long-term effects on pain self management, sleep quality, well-being, health, and health-related quality of
life (HRQOL).
Content of the thesis: This thesis consists of three original papers. Paper I
comprises a phenomenological study, while Papers II and III present results
from longitudinal prospective cohort studies. People in chronic pain who were
on a waiting list for multidisciplinary pain rehabilitation at one of three centres
in Iceland – Reykjalundur, Kristnes and Rehabilitation and Health Clinic at
Hveragerði– were invited to participate. The program lasted between four and
seven weeks, with data collected pre-treatment, at program completion, three
months after program completion and in a one-year follow-up.
Methods: Paper I was a phenomenological study that employed the
Vancouver School of Doing Phenomenology. Eleven participants were
interviewed, with 11 interviews conducted pre-treatment and 10 occurring
three months after the participants had completed the intervention. Paper II
was a longitudinal prospective cohort study with questionnaires filled out pre treatment, at completion and at one-year follow-up. Paper III was a
longitudinal prospective cohort study with questionnaires completed pre treatment and at one-year follow-up.
Results: Most participants were women aged 20–69 (M = 47.3) who were
married or living with a partner. Paper I: The overarching theme was the
journey of breaking the vicious circle of chronic pain. Prior to attending
rehabilitation, the participants were in survival mode, stuck in a vicious circle
of chronic pain. They used a variety of strategies to relieve and conceal their
pain. Reaching out for professional help was a positive turning point. Whilst
attending the pain rehabilitation program, participants learned to deconstruct
their habitual but inefficient ways of dealing with chronic pain. Three months
after completing the program, they were still rebuilding their daily lives. Pain
was still present but interfered much less with daily activities than previously.
Paper II: Eighty-one participants responded to all three questionnaires.
Average self-reported pain severity decreased at program completion and at
one-year follow-up (p < 0.001), and the interference of pain with general
activities, mood, walking ability, sleep and enjoyment of life also declined. At
one-year follow-up, more than a fifth (21%) of participants rated their health
as good or very good, which was markedly better than before treatment (7%;
p < 0.001). The three most commonly used pain self-management strategies
pre-treatment were positive thinking (68%), medication (58%) and distraction
(58%). No change was found in use of pain self-management strategies
between pre-treatment and one-year follow-up.
Paper III: Seventy-nine participants responded to both questionnaires.
Participants scored their pain lower at one-year follow-up than pre-treatment
(p < 0.001). At one year follow-up, three times as many participants (18%)
slept through the night (p = 0.004) as had done so pre-treatment (6%). Most
had disrupted sleep, mainly because of pain and psychological problems, at
both the pre-treatment and one-year follow-up time points. HRQOL increased
at one-year follow-up, with higher scores in all areas except the Mental
Component Summary (MCS). The pre-treatment Physical Component
Summary (PCS) was the only potential predictor for PCS at one-year follow up. Higher pre-treatment MCS scores and having pursued higher education
predicted higher MCS scores at one-year follow-up. Sleep problems, being a
woman and having children under 18 years predicted lower MCS scores at
one-year follow-up.
Conclusion: Pain rehabilitation programs can be the first step toward
breaking the vicious circle of chronic pain. The intervention was effective for
participants at one-year follow-up. Their self-reported pain severity and pain
interference had decreased, Moreover, their health and HRQOL increased.
However, they had failed to continue using the methods highlighted in the
pain rehabilitation program, and their sleep problems persisted. The findings
reveal the need for more emphasis on sleep problems and mental health in
connection with chronic pain in multidisciplinary pain rehabilitation
interventions. Therefore, some sort of follow-up is recommended for support,
education and maintaining the long-term effect of the intervention. The University of Akureyri Research Fund, the Research Fund of Ingibjörg R.

Implicit Equation for Photovoltaic Module Temperature and Efficiency via Heat Transfer Computational Model
This paper evaluates the photovoltaic (PV) module operating temperature’s relation to efficiency via a numerical heat transfer model. The literature reports that higher PV module operating temperatures impact PV module efficiency. There are dozens of explicit and implicit equations used to determine the PV module operating temperature. However, they are not universal, and for each application, it is necessary to insert a correction coefficient based on the environment and boundary conditions. Using a numerical method covering a more comprehensive range of PV module operation conditions to estimate a global equation, this study considers the solar radiation flux, Gt, solar ray direction with respect to the ground level, γ, convective heat transfer coefficient, h, tilt angle, β, ambient temperature, Ta, PV power output, Ppv, PV panel efficiency, η, and environmental properties. The results match the extant empirical work and related literature. PV module efficiency is found to have a linear relationship to the PV module operating temperature via a numerical heat transfer model corresponding to the well-known PV module. It specifies that heat transfer convection changes with PV module tilt angle, causing PV module operating temperature effects. It also represents the PV module operating temperature variations with ambient temperature and solar flux, like those reported in the literature.Center of Excellence (CoE) Research on AI and Simulation-Based Engineering at Exascale (RAISE).Peer Reviewe
Mechanical Elements Analysis of Stewart Platform: Computational Approach
Because of the mechanical stress importance in the dynamic mechanisms, a Stewart platform is subjected to analysis to extract its critical stress areas in this study. The Stewart platform is an effective mechanism because it has been employed as a stabilizer
or motion simulator. When this mechanism is subjected to static and dynamic forces in various applications, its components are at risk of failure in critical stress areas. This issue can be considered when designing, and parts failure can be prevented by knowing the
essential points and stress values. This study is modeled the Stewart platform with specific dimensions and mechanical properties in Ansys Inc. and subjected it to static and Modal analysis with a numerical approach. The results present effective parameters that could be used in the mechanical design for this category of this platform.Peer Reviewe
Flexibly graded monads and graded algebras
Post-print (lokagerð höfundar)When modelling side-effects using a monad, we need to equip the monad with effectful operations. This can be done by noting that each algebra of the monad carries interpretations of the desired operations. We consider the analogous situation for graded monads, which are a generalization of monads that enable us to track quantitative information about side-effects. Grading makes a significant difference: while many graded monads of interest can be equipped with similar operations, the algebras often cannot. We explain where these operations come from for graded monads. To do this, we introduce the notion of flexibly graded monad, for which the situation is similar to the situation for ordinary monads. We then show that each flexibly graded monad induces a canonical graded monad in such a way that operations for the flexibly graded monad carry over to the graded monad. In doing this, we reformulate grading in terms of locally graded categories, showing in particular that graded monads are a particular kind of relative monad. We propose that locally graded categories are a useful setting for work on grading in general. Both authors were supported by the Icelandic Research Fund grants no. 196323-053 and 228684-051.Peer reviewed (ritrýnd grein
Þáttaskil leik- og grunnskóla: Sjónarhorn foreldra barna með fjölbreyttan bakgrunn á Íslandi
The transition to primary school has been identified as a critical event in the lives of children that can have long term implications for their learning and development. The transition to primary school is also widely regarded as an emotional period of multifaceted transformations and adoptions of different strategies for parents, yet relatively little is known about the lived transition experiences of parents of children from diverse (linguistic, cultural, socio-economic) backgrounds. The aim of the research project is to examine the transitions from preschool to primary school from the perspectives of parents of children from diverse backgrounds in Iceland. Fourteen participants were recruited at two partner preschools in Reykjavík and invited to four rounds of semi-structured interviews over the course of twelve months, beginning at the end of their children’s stay at preschool and continuing throughout their first year of primary school. Photo-elicitation was employed during interview sessions and the data was interpreted through eclectic analytical frameworks and theoretical lenses.
The findings of this study, which have been published in four articles, suggest both overlap and divergence in parental experiences and attitudes towards the transition to primary school. Preschools were generally regarded as positive places for the children but attitudes towards parental belonging in the preschool community were nuanced, with some participants preferring to stay on the ‘outside’. The start of primary school was characterized by the families’ acquaintance with parallel communities of practice: the primary school, after-school care centers, organized sports and leisure activities, and heritage language learning. Parents leveled criticism towards the former two and seemed more actively engaged in the latter two. At the individual level, narratives of taking action when the child’s wellbeing was considered at stake and of re-evaluation of the participants’ own cultural backgrounds and values of their upbringing were present in the data. So too were narratives of vulnerability, lack of opportunities of education and work, and disenfranchisement. At the methodological level, an interpreter’s overinfluence was uncovered and a new dimension opened in data from an interpreter-facilitated interview. The study highlights the importance of gaining understanding of diverse parental perspectives and the need for further research to support positive transitions for all children.Þáttaskil leik- og grunnskóla eru talin einn af lykilviðburðum lífsins og líkleg til að
