Does relative rotation inclination affect disk lifetime in young binaries?
Surveys show strong evidence that disks typically dissipate in ~5 Myr, therefore planets must form on a similar timescale. However, the primary mechanisms driving disk-loss are still under investigation. Young binary stars are ideal targets for studying disk evolution because their stellar component provides a small control sample. This study probes the possibility that the relative rotation axes’ inclinations of young binaries may significantly affect disk lifetime, thus impacting their ability to form planets. A case study of the young binary DF Tau combines observational and computational analyses to investigate component rotation axes’ inclinations and compare them to the circumstellar disk properties of this system. Periodogram analyses of unresolved time-series photometry recover a rotation period of 10.5 d for the primary and an upper limit of 3.3 d for the secondary. Rotation periods combined with spectrally-derived projected rotation velocities yield an inclination of 90 degrees for both components. Additional investigation into a strong 9.3 d period present in periodogram indicates accretion hot spots are likely the source. DF Tau is one example target selected from a sample of ~100 different young binary observations and highlights the importance this data set has on informing our understanding of disk evolution and planet formation
The new right stuff: Social imaginaries of outer space and the capitalist accumulation of the cosmos
This thesis utilizes ethnographic and historical data in order to propose that the trajectory of outer space imaginaries—and therefore, as will be demonstrated, the future realities of outer space affairs—has drifted from peaceful exploration to violent exploitation due to the rise of private space corporations (operating under the moniker of NewSpace). This is partially due to the increasing acceptance of neoliberal capitalism within the United States—and much of the Global North—since the 1970s. Furthermore, NewSpace companies—which now possess multi-billion dollar contracts with governmental space agencies—are zealous adopters of neoliberal economics, and these philosophies are tied to colonial conceptions of the individual, limited governance, unchecked resource extraction, and frontier mentalities. These concepts became apparent during my multi-sited ethnographic investigations of NewSpace—as well as governmental—facilities and museums. This thesis argues that these hegemonic economic ontologies must be met with resistance from social scientists, science fiction authors, and the public in order to create a human future in outer space that is equitable, decolonized, and democratic
Inclusivity on Campus: Strategies for Counselors Creating Community for All Students with an Emphasis on Muslim College Students
Recent statistics suggest that the current campus climate across the United States does not fully support inclusivity of students of marginalized groups, as one aspect of student wellness. In this manuscript, the authors review current literature on the experiences of marginalized student groups, focusing on injustices experienced by Muslim students on today’s campuses. The authors acknowledge the current collaborate efforts that many college counselors are putting forth to promote a more inclusive campus environment, while also recognizing that marginalization of students is still present on campuses nationwide. Further, the manuscript will address concerns with student wellness in the Muslim student population by highlighting the impact inclusion has on holistic student wellness. In summary, the authors outline opportunities for college counselors to notice the negative impact of injustice on student wellbeing, engage in collaboration focused on creating inclusivity campus-wide, provide diversity education for their campuses, and reflect on their own personal and professional experiences
Bending gender codes: An analysis of Hunter X Hunter genderqueer characters
Japanese animation is a major economic and cultural market in Japan and across the world. Anime studios produce upwards of 50 different animated series every year (Napier, 2005). One of the most remarkable aspects of Japanese animation is that it has a wide variety of fans, ranging from children to adults. Hunter x Hunter (2011), the main text analyzed in this study, is a Japanese animated series which follows the story of Gon and Killua, two young friends training to become Professional Hunters. The characters Bisky and Hisoka are the focus of a textual analysis informed by Goffman’s (1979) Gender Codes. Seven episodes were analyzed in order to discover the ways gender norms are both upheld and defied throughout Hunter x Hunter . The analysis demonstrates that both Bisky and Hisoka disrupt traditional gender norms throughout the series and present a genderqueer identity. In discovering the ways gender norms are both upheld and defied throughout Hunter x Hunter, the author proves that Hunter x Hunter can be useful as a tool for understanding the nuances of gender construction and performance
Quantification and Comparison of Calcium in Juniper Ash and Soil Used in Traditional Navajo Foods
In order to achieve healthy bone formation and structure, the human body needs an adequate source of calcium in their diet. A calcium deficiency can cause multiple bone-related disorders such as osteoporosis and rickets in children. Although most Native Americans, due to being lactose intolerant, are unable to consume dairy products, previous research has demonstrated that elderly Native American women had fewer hip fractures than elderly Caucasian women. This suggested that they are receiving an adequate non-dairy based source of calcium in their diet on a daily basis.A potential source of calcium is traditional Navajo foods, specifically blue corn-based dishes that contain juniper ash which comes from branches from a juniper tree that are burned until only an ash is left. Previous work done by Christensen quantified calcium in juniper ash collected on the Navajo reservation and suggested juniper ash as an adequate source of calcium comparable to milk. The focus of the present research was to expand on this previous research by (1) quantifying calcium in different segments of the juniper tree, (2) comparing two different ashing techniques (laboratory and traditional Navajo ashing process), and (3) establishing a relationship between calcium concentration of the juniper tree and the soil beneath the tree.During sample collection, 20 sampling sites were selected for analysis, along with five juniper samples collected from a flea market as well as a blue corn meal sample; a total of 27 samples were collected. Quantification of calcium was done via flame atomic absorption spectroscopy utilizing external calcium calibration standards. Results suggest the following: (1) there is a greater average concentration of calcium in the juniper branch (309 mg/g) compared to the juniper leaves (279 mg/g). (2) The type of ashing process will determine the amount of calcium in juniper samples. Samples ashed via muffle furnace had a greater average concentration of calcium (289 mg/g) compared to traditional Navajo process (242 mg/g). (3) Compared to the calcium concentration in a juniper tree, the soil collected beneath had an extremely low amount of calcium (11.8 mg/g)
Vascular flora of Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, Coconino County, Arizona
Vermilion Cliffs National Monument (VCNM) is located on the Colorado Plateau in northern Coconino County, Arizona. VCNM encompasses 276,566 acres of Pinyon- juniper woodland, warm and cold desert grassland, desert scrub, sand dune, spring, and riparian vegetation communities. A total of 710 plant taxa representing 73 families and 296 genera are vouchered from within the monument boundary including one new state report. VCNM is home to one threatened species, Asclepias welshii. Seven species endemic to Arizona occur here, as well as at least three additional Colorado Plateau endemics. Non-native taxa make up 7% of the flora of VCNM. Several non-native taxa, including Centaurea diffusa, Cuscuta occidentalis, Medicago polymorpha, Portulaca oleracea, and Tribulus terrestris, are classified as noxious weeds and may pose a threat to both VCNM and its close neighbors Grand Canyon National Monument and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
Wellness of Select Immigrant Chinese and Taiwanese Wives in the United States
A qualitative phenomenological research study was conducted to investigate the acculturation experience and wellness of 10 Chinese and Taiwanese immigrant women who married United States citizens. A social constructivist theoretical framework was taken to explore the participants’ acculturation experience and wellness issues from the lens of their worldviews. We attempted to understand these immigrant women’s acculturation, wellness, cultural identity development, marital concerns, and contentment. Ten participants who married United States citizens were interviewed. Six of them participated in a group interview, and four of them completed individual interviews. Six themes were revealed: (a) language and cultural challenges, (b) relationship aspects of emotional suppression, (c) parenting conflicts, (d) determination for growth, (e) spousal support and gratitude, and (f) religious support. Cultural dissimilarities, diverse communication styles, and language differences appeared to result in challenges affecting these wives’ wellness and acculturation to cultural aspects of their marriages and societal norms in the United States. Most participants gained a sense of competence related to their own personal wellness in relation to their acculturation process such as expressing their conflicting emotions. We encourage counselors and researchers to understand immigrant women’s wellness as it relates to the cultural complexities regarding their acculturative transitions so as to better help these women address their wellness and counseling issues
Using GIS to compare leading process and empirically based soil erosion models within headwater watersheds
Changes in North American ponderosa pine ecosystems in relation to wildland fire severity are taking place due to human influence and the tools to asses these changes vary greatly. These fires alter the types of vegetation and cause severe erosion events, as well as make freshwater resources harder to manage in headwater watersheds. The purpose of this study is to analyze and investigate the differences of the two leading GIS based soil erosion models, the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) and the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP). In particular, the models will be compared to address which one better predicts the state of two neighboring watersheds that endured the same high severity burn and flooding events. These watersheds reacted differently as noted by the streambed composition. Parameters were created using a land manager’s approach. The results of this study found that the process-based WEPP modeloutperforms the RUSLE model in its ability to assess post-burn flooding events through its ease of implementation and inclusion of climate and erosionprocesses in complex topography and therefore should be used by land managers interested in studying erosion events in similar circumstances
Predator response, parental behavior, and nest survival of forest birds in a tropical rainforest
The parental behaviors of species that care for their young are tailored to the environment they live in due to the high selective pressure of reproducing successfully. For birds, nest predation is thought to be the main driver of many reproductive traits, including parental behaviors. Other measures of habitat quality such as food availability and climate also influence nest survival and parental behaviors. In places where predator species have been introduced and/or habitat change has occurred, we may expect endemic species to either go extinct or quickly adapt to these new interactions with their environment. This study examined two aspects of parental behavior of birds living in a changed environment. First, using endemic Hawaiian birds and recently introduced birds as a model system, I experimentally tested responses to current, historical, and introduced predators. I found that endemic bird species responded to a model of an introduced predator, a rat (Rattus sp), with similar intensity to that of a novel object (a box), suggesting a general neophobic reaction. Endemic birds, however, showed less variability in response to the rat, suggesting some differentiation of the two, with a stronger, more uniform response to the rat. For recently introduced birds, I found that one species responded strongly to a historical predator that it had not seen for ca. 90 years (a snake), while another recently introduced species did not, suggesting large inter-specific variation in retention of antipredator behavior. The second aspect of my thesis compared nest survival and nest attendance behavior between the same species breeding in a forest restored from pastureland ca. 20 years ago and those breeding in nearby old-growth forest. I found no difference in nest survival or nest attendance behaviors between the restored forest and an old-growth forest, indicating that recently restored forests provided viable breeding habitat and highlighting the importance of using behavior and reproductive success to measure effects of restoration. Both studies indicate that endemic species are adaptable in respect to introduced species and habitat changes. These are promising results in the face of the rapid anthropogenic changes facing many species across the globe today
