The impact of Covid - 19 on households’ gem mining industry: a study based on Pelmadulla divisional secretariat, Ratnapura district
The study aims to identify the impacts of COVID-19 on the household gem
mining industry. In order to obtain the objective, this study used household
income as a dependent variable and education, monthly consumption costs,
and the number of family members as independent variables. The primary data
were collected through structured questionnaires, focus group discussions, and
interviews by the cluster sampling method. For descriptive and multiple
regression analysis, MS Excel and SPSS 26 are used. This study found that
few impacts were found through descriptive analysis, such as savings
decreasing, fewer working days, and health issues being quite high due to the
lockdown and travel restrictions. Moreover, this study revealed that education,
numbers of family members have been positive impact and monthly
consumption cost has been negative impact on the income level of
households. Thus, negative and positive relations between variables promote
the socio-economic status of the household gem mining industry. Hence, this
research draws up a few recommendations to improve the socio-economic
status of the household. The government should consider the gem mining field
and also adopt the proper policy for those workers to overcome such a situation
in the future
Toward a feminism and Quranic hermeneutics on gender equality: a study of Shaykh Adam Abdullah Al-Ilory’s works
Feminism is a branch of modern literary theory, pursuing equal rights and legal protection for
women in politics, education, economic and culture. It also posits that men and women are equal,
both of them deserve equal rights and values in the society. The struggle emanated from Europe
and America, when women were considered to be inferior to their male counterparts. Recently,
the agitation has spread all over the places, which includes Islamic societies. Amongst the notable
scholars in Yorubaland called for women right was Shaykh Adam Al-Ilory, being a renowned
Arabic and Islamic reformer and social critics. It is therefore the interest of this essay to examine
the questions of feminism in the works and how he succeeded in the interpretation of Quranic
passages to answer the women’s rights and gender equality. The study adopts descriptive and
analytical method of research. The findings reveal that there are no evidences in the Al-Qur’ān
that women should be subjected to oppression and disrespect against the attitude of some people
due to the lack of understanding Quranic text. The paper therefore, suggests among others; that
proper interpretation must be given to the Quranic texts regarding the women’s right. Islam must
also be well understood from its source; that is Al-Qur’ān rather from personal opinions
Political representation and impact factors of women in the national assembly Sri Lanka and Bangladesh
The study examines the political representation of women in national legislative assembly in South
Asian regional state of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh national legislative assembly. The main objective
of the study is to define and analysis the political participation of women in the Sri Lanka and
Bangladesh national legislative assembly of Bangladesh Jatio Sangsad from 1970 to 2021. And to
explain the factors impacting the political participation of women. Secondary data were used in this
study, quantitative and qualitative data are in use. This time it is useful to relate the political
participation of women in the national legislative assembly of women from 1970 to 2021 in Sri
Lanka and Bangladesh. Secondary data used in this study includes library and internet. At the end of
the study women made up more than half of the population in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, but the
political participation of women in national legislative assembly was very under representation.
Hower, the political participation of women in Bangladesh in on the rise compared to Sri Lanka. In
the South Asian region. It is a common feature that Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have very low
representation of women in their national legislative assembly. It’s influenced by various factors such
as socio, economic, political and ideological. Education and family background have also had an
impact on women’s parliamentary political participation. Issues such as education and family
background have also had an impact on political participation. It can also be said that women in
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka need to be politically empowered to increase their political participation in
parliament in the future, as well as increase the political representation of women in the National
Assembly while strengthening the legal framework
Repellent and insecticidal effect of selected herbal extractions against adult anopheles tessellatus theobald, 1901
Mosquitoes are responsible for the transmission of many kinds of vector bone
diseases such as Dengue, Malaria, Lymphatic filariasis and Japanese encephalitis,
yellow fever, and other forms of encephalitis. Among these kinds of diseases,
Malaria is the most devasting disease for many centuries and causes many deaths
annually. In Sri Lanka, Malaria is transmitted by Anopheles species primarily and
secondary. Other than disease transmission mosquitoes can cause painful bites.
So, we must improve personal protection to prevent their being bitten. The present
study has investigated the repellents and insecticidal activities of five herbal
extracts in Sri Lanka namely Calotropis gigantea L., Tagetes erecta L., Lantana
camara L., Vitex negundo L., and Cinnamomum zeylanicum L. against secondary
Malaria vector species of Anopheles tessellatus using WHO standard
susceptibility test kit for adult mosquitoes. Methanolic five-leaf extracts were
evaluated by using ten unfed 2-5 days adult female mosquitoes of A. tessellatus.
The contact irritancy assay was done for the investigation of percentage
repellency and the toxicity assay was done for the investigation of percentage
mortality using three concentrations (1000ppm, 2500ppm, 5000ppm) and each
concentration carried out three replicates. The diluted MeOH was used as control
test. The C. zeylanicum was recorded with the highest percentage mortality
(5000ppm; 100.00±0.00) after 24 hours exposure period; and the highest
percentage repellency (5000ppm; 100.00±0.00) after 1 hour exposure period.
Tagetes erecta was recorded potential percentage mortality (5000ppm;
83.33±3.33) and potential percentage repellency (5000ppm; 55.67±12.67).
Calotropis gigantea were recorded lowest percentage mortality and lowest
percentage repellency for all concentrations. In conclusion C. zeylanicum acted
as best repellent and insecticidal extract among selected extracts against An.
tessellatus. According to findings of this experiment, suggest doing some
investigation of chemical compounds which may affect for repellent and
insecticidal activity of selected extracts in future

A systematic review of relational databases and noSQL databases
The volume (petabyte to terabyte), variety (unstructured, structured and hybrid), but also velocity
of the digital world are all increasing quickly. The standard DBMS, which provides the Relational
Database (RDB), guarantees the consistency of transactions and the integrity of the data. These
are the standards for a good DBMS, which are applicable to numerous software programs.
However, NoSQL (Not Only SQL) databases have emerged in recent years as a response to the
problem after traditional databases failed to address the speed at which data were growing. These
two types have different benefits and drawbacks from one another despite being used for the same
tasks (creating, retrieving, updating, and managing data). This study used a systematic review
technique to collect data from previously published studies. The data were collected from
reputable publishers, and these data were evaluated independently to compare the RDB and
NoSQL. Confidentiality, data integrity, auditing, authentication, customer interaction, Big Data
technologies, Cloud technologies, complexity, performance, cost and variety are the main
differing attributes which are included in the main categories such as security, technologies and
so on. Also this study includes benefits and drawbacks of RDB and NoSQL as well. Especially,
RDBMS pay more attention to data consistency than NoSQL databases do. As a result, NoSQL
creates a lot more vulnerability than RDBMS. NoSQL databases should use an external technique
to conduct and ensure database security because they have a lot of experience with the expansion
of big data and can easily handle a massive rise in data. Given the expansion and development of
NoSQL database systems, its potential is vast. The majority of contemporary software and
applications rely on the web, and over the coming years, the amount of data that needs to be stored
is likely to rise significantly. These reasons suggest that NoSQL databases will develop
significantly over the next few years, expand, and eventually find ways to address their security
concerns. Furthermore, the discussion deeply analyses the comparison between RDB and NoSQL.
Due to the restrictions caused by the scarcity of publications in online sources and also the lack of
open access possibilities, this work was severely suppressed. Likewise, this study's principal
weakness was the dearth of newly published studies. More study on relational databases and
NoSQL databases for online information systems should be done, according to our
recommendation
Detection of Freshness of the Fruits using Machine Learning Techniques
Survival period of the fruits after harvest is relatively
short. The main objective of this research is to measure the freshness
of fruits by observing their CO2 release, water vapor release, and
O2 absorption after harvesting for the papaya and watermelon. They
were categorized into the three groups (500g-1kg, 1kg-1.5kg, 1.5kg-
2kg) and tested in 4 selected days including the harvested day, three
days after harvest, a week after, and two weeks after to observe
the changes in these three factors (CO2, O2, and humidity). A CO2
sensor, an O2 sensor, and a humidity sensor was set up to detect the
changes. The collected data was used to train the machine learning
model (Keras Sequential Model). After entering the type of the fruit,
weight, the difference of oxygen, and water vapor concentration
after 45 minutes, as inputs for the model, the model will predict
the freshness of the fruit as a percentage. The Accuracy of the
developed model was considered to be 0.989. The results of the
analysis implied that the rate of O2 absorption gradually increases
after harvesting and the water vapor release gradually decreases.
It is suggested to use higher sensitivity sensors to obtain accurate results
Applicability of community- based development approach in women development processes - a sociological study based on micro credit programme
This paper analyses the relevance of community- based development framework to the development
processes aimed at women socio-economic upliftment, specifically focusing on the implementation
of Micro credit programme. There have been many inimical impacts on communities brought about
by Micro credit programmes, which have not been made consistently with community- based
development approaches in its implementations, and in which women beneficiaries are not very much
conscious about the significance of the implementations of the programmes for their socio-economic
advancement. The main objective of the study is to analyze how such implementations, which were
not made according to community- based development framework, cause detrimental aftermaths and
also become ineffective in producing expected outcomes in targeted communities. This descriptive
study is mainly based on qualitative method, and quantitative method has also been used to a lesser
extent. Primary data was collected by using questionnaire survey, key informant interviews, personal
interviews and focus group discussions. Secondary information required to the study was accessed
from relevant documents and records of the implemented programmes. Purposive sampling and
simple random sampling were used for the selection of the samples in this study.
Here, fifty women who have taken micro credit from ten micro credit companies have been selected
as simple random samples based on purpose sampling and they have been analysed using the data
collected via interviewing and questionnaire. The study found that micro credit programmes
implemented in the Mavadivembu 02 GN division, the study area, prompted various negative
outcomes than the expected ones, and in some cases, exacerbated the conditions of the targeted
beneficiaries. Excessive burdens of debts, unemployability, decreasing tendencies of income
generations, conflicts, suicides and so on were identified as issues caused by the micro credit
programmes in the area. The study also found that those implementations were not based on the
approaches depicted in community-based development theory as suitable strategies for community
development initiatives such as community consciousness, empowerment and establishments of
supportive structures and failed to achieve intended and preferable effects on the lives of
beneficiaries
