Will future maize improvement programs leverage the canopy light-interception, photosynthetic, and biomass capacities of traditional accessions?
Maize germplasm has greater latent potential to address the global food and feed crisis because of its high radiation, water and nutrient efficiencies. Photosynthetic and canopy architectural traits in maize are important in determining yield. The present study aimed to screen a subset of local maize accessions in Sri Lanka to evaluate their photosynthetic, biomass and yield related traits and to identify resource efficient germplasm. Experiments were carried out in the Ampara district of Sri Lanka. Eight maize accessions viz; SEU2, SEU6, SEU9, SEU10, SEU14, SEU15, SEU17 and SEU17 and two elite F1 cultivars (cv. Pacific-999 and cv. Bhadra) were analyzed under field conditions. Our results showed that maize genotypes produced a lower leaf area index (LAI) at the third and tenth week after field planting (WAP). However, the LAI was significantly increased in six WAP by Pacific-999, SEU2, SEU9, and SEU15. A similar trend was observed for percentage of light interception at three WAP (47%), six WAP (>64%), and decreased at 10 WAP. In addition, LAI maximum values were between 3.0 and 3.5, allowing 80% of the incident light to be intercepted by maize canopies. The estimated light extinction coefficient (k) remained lower (0.73) in dark-adapted leaves. In addition, Pacific-999, SEU2, SEU9, and SEU17 had significantly higher rates of photosynthesis with minimal stomatal conductance and transpiration rates. As a result, they outperformed the control plants in terms of biomass, cob weight and grain yield. This suggests that native maize germplasm could be introduced as novel, less resource-intensive cultivars to sustain global food security
Evaluating the efficacy of various fungicidal agents and Phytohormone to manage rough bark disease of cinnamon (Cinnamomum Zeylanicum b.)
Cinnamon, a vital spice crop exported from Sri
Lanka, faces the economic threat of Rough Bark
Disease (RBD), a major biotic factor affecting
cinnamon production. In response to the
environmental and health concerns associated
with chemical pesticides, environmentally
friendly alternatives to control RBD are becoming
increasingly popular. This study compares the
effectiveness of multiple fungicide treatments and
a phytohormone in controlling RBD under field
conditions. The field experiment was based on a
factorial design and included six treatments with
ten replicates each. Both in vitro and in vivo
evaluations of the treatments were carried out,
which included tebuconazole at a concentration of
0.05% (T1), tebuconazole at a concentration of
0.1% (T2), aqueous neem extract (T3), 5 ml
salicylic acid (T4) and 1% Bordeaux mixture
included (T5) and a control group (T6). The
results showed that the most effective inhibition of
mycelial growth (100%) occurred with 1%
Bordeaux mixture treatments in in vitro
evaluations. Tebuconazole also significantly
inhibited mycelial growth at concentrations of
0.05% and 0.1%. In the field trial, which included
two application periods, no differences were
evident between the treatments with 1% Bordeaux
mixture and 0.05% or 0.1% tebuconazole in the
occurrence and severity of RBD. However,
combined in vitro and in vivo studies highlight the
superiority of the 1% Bordeaux mixture as the
most effective antifungal agent for controlling
RBD in cinnamon compared to other treatments
LOT-Based emotion sensitive smart mirror for room automation
People can perform their daily routines effectively and efficiently with The
Internet of Things (IoT). This technology is expanding and getting advanced day by
day. Some devices do not need human interaction to work when they are integrated
with IoT. At present, IoT technology is connected to our home appliances as well.
Things can be performed more efficiently and accurately with this type of smart
equipment. More advanced tasks can be done easily when Image Processing is
combined with IoT. This project focuses to integrate IoT and the mirror which is used
in our daily lives. When life becomes busy, our free time gets reduced. Therefore, time
management plays a major role in the present world. As support for managing time,
this project targets to improve the regular mirror into a Smart mirror with IoT, which
operates with voice commands. The aim of this project is to design a smart mirror for
the home environment bundled with the maximum possible features while maintaining
a low budget. This mirror provides a better user experience by including features such
as motion detection, controlling the light according to the light intensity of the room,
face recognition, displaying time, date, weather information, and news headlines,
playing music, and showing quotes according to the mood of the user (Emotion
detection), and controlling appliances in the room using voice commands (Voice
recognition and Room automation). This mirror can greatly help its user to manage life
easier, faster, and more efficiently. Besides, we have also maintained a low budget for
building this smart mirror. Face recognition, emotion recognition, and room automation
are all interesting features of this smart mirror. This paper describes the design and
construction of the smart mirror using Raspberry Pi
Working with lidar data in fusion: monitoring black bear bark stripping in redwoods at schatz demonstration tree farm
Black bear bark stripping in redwoods is a threat to commercial timber production
because of the detrimental effects on redwood tree health. The purpose of the study was
to delineate vegetation characteristics of redwood plots at the black bear bark stripping
sites at Schatz Demonstration Tree farm. FUSION, an open-source, spatially explicit,
remote sensing software developed by the Silviculture and Forest Models Team of the
US Forest Service was used to calculate a few forest-stand metrics. The main research
question being asked is whether Lidar (Light Detecting and Ranging) derived forest
metrics combined with LDV are useful to detect and isolate the bark-damaged redwood
trees among healthy trees. FUSION allows visualization of Lidar data in the Lidar Data
Viewer (LDV), and batch processing allows calculation of both individual tree and
grid-based metrics within plots. Field visits were made to identify patterns and possible
causes of bear bark stripping on redwood trees, and GPS points were collected from
damaged trees. To work with FUSION, a bare earth model was created using a digital
elevation model to display a contour map over an Orthophoto. Three plots with dead
redwood, stripped and recovering redwood, as well as stripped and resprouting redwood
were displayed using a small stroked-circle sampling method. Histograms were
visualized in the LDV to distinguish high-intensity values for natural features such as
vegetation and low-intensity values for features like wet and bare soil. Simple
measurements of bare earth elevation and treetop height within plots were taken using
Lidar point cloud data and visualized in the LDV window. Batch processing was
performed to extract point cloud data within each plot using the Clipdata algorithm and
then plot statistics were computed using the Cloudmetrics algorithm. Lastly, the
Gridmetrics algorithm was used to generate a landscape-wide canopy cover raster. The
results showed that the dead secondary-growth redwood plot has 73 % canopy cover,
while the stripped and recovering, plus the stripped and resprouting plots have 95% and
78% canopy cover respectively. The dead secondary-growth redwood plot has the
tallest trees (60 m ±7.6) compared to the stripped and recovering (48 m ±8.4) and
stripped and resprouting (41 m ±7.7) plots. In conclusion, calculating Cloudmetrics for
each bear damage site, silviculturally managed sites, and undamaged sites would be
valuable to understanding the structural characteristics of vegetation and their effects on
black bear bark stripping-induced stress on redwood trees. Plot data and site

A successful way to teach literature survey in blended learning – an efficient methodology and applications
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Sri Lankan state universities promoted
e-learning, increasing demand for courses like Literature Surveys. Academics
proposed a 15-h blended mode course methodology involving content delivery, assessment marking, and session plan evaluations with well-defined rubrics.
The procedure was tested, revealing the achievement of most intended learning
outcomes (ILOs). The proposed teaching method, combined with applications
and web resources through this study, was recommended for its effectiveness in
achieving learning outcomes
Fingerprint systems: sensors, image acquisition, interoperability and challenges
The fingerprint is a widely adopted biometric trait in forensic and civil applications. Fingerprint biometric systems have been investigated using contact prints and latent and contactless images which range from low to high resolution. While the imaging techniques are advancing with sensor variations, the input fingerprint images also vary. A general fingerprint recognition pipeline consists of a sensor module to acquire images, followed by feature representation, matching and decision modules. In the sensor module, the image quality of the biometric traits significantly affects the biometric system’s accuracy and performance. Imaging modality, such as contact and contactless, plays a key role in poor image quality, and therefore, paying attention to imaging modality is important to obtain better performance. Further, underlying physical principles and the working of the sensor can lead to their own forms of distortions during acquisition. There are certain challenges in each module of the fingerprint recognition pipeline, particularly sensors, image acquisition and feature representation. Present reviews in fingerprint systems only analyze the imaging techniques in fingerprint sensing that have existed for a decade. However, the latest emerging trends and recent advances in fingerprint sensing, image acquisition and their challenges have been left behind. Since the present reviews are either obsolete or restricted to a particular subset of the fingerprint systems, this work comprehensively analyzes the state of the art in the field of contact-based, contactless 2D and 3D fingerprint systems and their challenges in the aspects of sensors, image acquisition and interoperability. It outlines the open issues and challenges encountered in fingerprint systems, such as fingerprint performance, environmental factors, acceptability and interoperability, and alternate directions are proposed for a better fingerprint system
Extraction and characterization of cellulose nanocrystals from filter paper by sulfuric acid hydrolysis method
Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are
nanomaterials derived from cellulose, which is the
main component of plant cell walls. Nanocrystals are
obtained through a process of mechanical or chemical
treatment that breaks down cellulose fibres into
smaller dimensions at the nanoscale. This study aims
to investigate the hydrolysis of filter paper into
cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) using 60% (w/w)
sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and identify the characteristics of
the extracted CNCs. Filter papers are made from 100%
premium pre-treated and high-quality cellulose fibres.
The pulverized filter paper mixed the 60% (w/w)
sulfuric acid in MLR 1:20 with strong agitation, and
the mixture was heated at 50°C for 120 minutes. The
mixture was diluted with cold distilled water in a 1:10
ratio to stop hydrolysis. The resulting mixture was
centrifuged at 8000 rpm for 15 minutes to separate the
CNCs. The precipitate was washed with distilled water
using a dialysis membrane until the pH reached
neutral. The properties of extracted CNCs have been
discovered by Transmission Electron Microscopy
(TEM) analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR)
analysis and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. The
results of TEM analysis showed the needle-shaped
morphology of CNCs and sizes ranging from 15–30
nm in diameter to 100–300 nm in length. The FTIR
results revealed the functional groups present in the
extracted CNCs. The XRD diffraction results showed
the crystalline structure of the extracted CNCs. The
results indicate that filter paper can be used as a source
of cellulose for CNC extraction
Composition of individual work, pair work and group work in teaching science subject for grade 06 students
Composition of group work, individual work, and pair work in teaching Science subject
is one of the best researchers because, as shown above, three learner-centered methods
were rarely used in Science subject when reviewing previous review or research
articles. These three learner-centered methods more adequately provided consequence
areas that will be beneficial in the future. Science is finding new things day-by-day.
According to that aspect, only individual work can support achieving that level.
Therefore, this study aims for determining the impact of these three learner-centered
methods and the contribution of constructive learning to that purpose. Group work can
be an effective method to motivate students, encourage active learning, and develop key
critical-thinking, communication, and decision-making skills. But without careful
planning and facilitation, group work can be frustrating. Students and instructors feel
like a waste of time. Although a professionally qualified teacher can guide the
classroom perfectly in that case. Working individually allows to focus on what want or
need to accomplish a task. Working with a pair refers to working together when they
are learning. It is important to share their knowledge directly as well as with each other.
Further, this research is described regarding constructive learning and how to construct
the lesson gradually in a 40-minute period and how it is maintained in an effective
manner. Thus, through the marks for the different strategies, it was proved to be the
best method to teach this subject as well. In order to that, test papers, students’ sheets,
lesson plans, and observations were the basic instruments of this study. Thus, this study
shows the outcomes of students’ achievements through the different working patterns in
three main strategies in the Science subject
Brand equity and consumer buying behavior: determinants of intentions to visit tourism destinations in Cavite, Philippines
Purpose: By highlighting the four dimensions that constitute brand equity, and
the four factors that influence the selection and decisions of consumers, this
research aimed to assist tourist destination owners and managers in creating a
brand and knowing their target market and their preferences when it comes to
spending their money.
Design/methodology/approach: The descriptive correlational and comparative
methods were employed and a total of 339 BSTM students during the first
semester of SY 2022-2023 were the participants of the study.
Findings: This study revealed that the majority of the guests visiting the tourism
destinations in Cavite were female, young, with a family earning above minimum
wage in a month, and living in the urban areas of Cavite. Perceived quality and
Psychological factors came out to be the most dominant factors the respondents
considered in visiting tourist destinations. There is no significant difference in the
perceived brand equity when grouped according to their demographic profile.

grouped according to their demographic profile. There is a significant relationship
between perceived brand equity and buying behavior.
Practical Implications: This study recommends that a step-by-step approach
should be used, from identifying whom the brand is to emphasizing its points of
uniqueness and user profile.
Research limitations/implications: Customers may therefore positively assess
and develop a link that will lead to an enduring and unbreakable bond (brand
loyalty), which shapes and impacts their purchasing decision.
Originality/value: The analysis of this study concludes that Tourism
Destinations in Cavite with higher levels of brand equity would generate higher
levels of customer visits. Also, consumer buying behavior was associated with
more willingness to visit a destination
