Invariant feature encoding for contact handprints using delaunay triangulated graph
Contact-based biometric applications primarily use prints from a finger or a palm for a
single instance in different applications. For access control, there is an enrollment process using one
or more templates compared with verification images. In forensics applications, randomly
located, partial, and often degraded prints acquired from a crime scene are compared with those
captured from suspects or existing fingerprint databases, like AFIS. In both scenarios, if we need
to use handprints that include segments from the finger and palm, what would be the solution?
The motivation behind this is the concept of one single algorithm for one hand. Using an algorithm
that can incorporate both prints in a common processing framework can be an alternative which
will have advantages like scaling to larger existing databases. This work proposes a method that
uses minutiae or minutiae-like features, Delaunay triangulation, and graph matching with invariant
feature representation to overcome the effects of rotation and scaling. Since palm prints have a large
surface area with degradation, they tend to have many false minutiae compared to fingerprints, and
the existing palm print algorithms fail to tackle this. The proposed algorithm constructs Delaunay
triangulated graphs (DTG) using minutiae where Delaunay triangles form from minutiae, and initiate
a collection of base triangles for opening the matching process. Several matches may be observed
for a single triangle match when two images are compared. Therefore, the set of initially matched
triangles may not be a true set of matched triangles. Each matched triangle is then used to extend as a
sub-graph, adding more nodes to it until a maximum graph size is reached. When a significant region
of the template image is matched with the test image, the highest possible order of this graph will
be obtained. To prove the robustness of the algorithm to geometrical variations and working ability
with extremely degraded (similar to latent prints) conditions, it is demonstrated with a subset of
partial-quality and extremely-low-quality images from the FVC (fingerprint) and the THUPALMLAB
(palm print) databases with and without geometrical variations. The algorithm is useful when partial
matches between template and test are expected, and alignment or geometrical normalization is not
accurately possible in pre-processing. It will also work for cross-comparisons between images that
are not known a priori
Development and quality assessment of composite string hoppers developed by using the jack seed flour (artocarpus heterophyllus L.) and the rice flour (oryza sativa)
The study was done to produce the string hoppers using
composite flour of jackfruit seed (Artocarpus heterophyllus) and rice flour
(Oryza sativa) and to determine the quality properties of the final sample.
The different ratios of mixtures of rice flour (Samba) and jackfruit seed flour
(Varikka) were mixed in the proportions of 100:0, 95:05, 90:10, 85:15, and
80:20 (w/w). The mixtures (100g) were combined with dissolved salt (2 g)
water (0.5 l) and the types of dough were prepared. The string hoppers were
developed and steamed. Then, they were subjected to quality determination
using AOAC 2000 and the data were statistically interpreted at 0.05
significant level. The proximate analysis of jackfruit seed flour revealed that
it contained 5.78% protein, 2.49% crude fibre, 1.77% fat, 15.88% moisture,
2.62% total mineral content and 71.46% of carbohydrates. The sensory
determination showed that the string hoppers complemented with 5% of
jackfruit seed flour were well accepted for their colour, texture, flavour, mouth
feel and overall acceptability related to the other mixtures and they were
closely resembled the rice flour string hoppers. The mixture of 5% jackfruit
seed flour and 95% of rice flour was fruitful for the preparation of string
hoppers with best physico-chemical and sensory qualities
Antibiotics utilization pattern for neonates in special baby care unit in Ampara District general hospital, Sri Lanka
No proper standard guidelines for prescription of antibiotics for neonates are available.
The careless, needless, and overuse of antibiotics has resulted in an alarming increase in
antibiotic resistance, a serious risk to public health. It is necessary to develop and
implement improved guidelines for the use of antibiotics in newborn sepsis based on
microbial aetiology and sensitivity. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to assess
the patterns of antibiotic utilization of neonates in a special baby care unit in Teaching
Hospital, Ampara in Sri Lanka. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a
single centered study from October 2022 to March 2023. A total of 51 patients admitted
to the neonatal unit, Ampara Hospital, Sri Lanka. Neonates who were receiving
antibiotics during the period of hospital stay at the neonatal unit were included in the
study. The demographic data, the prescribed drug information and other relevant data
were extracted from the medical records and neonatal unit registers. The p- value <0.05
was considered statistically significant. Males (55%) were higher than females. High
number of antibiotics were prescribed for those born term (39) followed by preterm (8),
extreme preterm (2) and moderate to late preterm (2). The neonates received a total of
123 prescribed drugs and 12190 doses. Among the 13 antibiotics, Benzylpenicillin (47),
Cefotaxime (37), Flucloxacillin (7) and Gentamicin (7) were most frequently
prescribed. More than half of the neonatal subjects have received two antibiotics and a
quarter of them received three antibiotics. The most frequently prescribed drug
categories were Penicillins, Cephalosporins and Aminoglycosides. The total prescribed
drug dose was higher in term neonates (10089mg) followed by preterm (1408mg),
moderate or late preterm (318mg) and extreme preterm neonates (301). Antibiotics
dosing interval was higher in extreme preterm followed by preterm, term and moderate
or late preterm neonates, respectively. Most of the infants were admitted to neonatal
unit for neonatal sepsis followed by Preterm, Neonatal Meningitis, and Small for
Gestational Age. Most frequently prescribed drug categories were Penicillins,
Cephalosporins and Aminoglycosides. Benzylpenicillin, Cefotaxime, Flucloxacillin and
Gentamicin were most frequently prescribed antibiotics
Text detection in scene images and posters
Scene images, name boards, road names and posters enriched with Sinhala are crucial
issue for locals whose mother tongue is another language or foreigners who visit Sri
Lanka often. Since tourists cannot understand the local language, there are only guides
to help them find places and understand the things around them. To overcome the issue,
this research aims to introduce Sinhala text detection and character recognition in scene
images and posters. This helps the users to clarify the process of understanding Sinhala
text content in scene images and posters. It facilitates the understanding process while
translating the content into their native languages. However, the complexity of
character detection and recognition in scene images is extremely challenging compared
to classical character detection and recognition on plain background images. This has
been overcome by introducing projection profiles. In this work, vertical and horizontal
projection profiles were exploited to extract the text lines and words, while the OCR
technique was used to recognize the characters. The extracted sentences with a set of
words were then translated into the user’s native language. A real-time dataset was
acquired from recent protests, road labels, cutouts, name boards and sign boards for the
experiment. The experimental results of each phase show that there is potential to use
the system for Sinhala language character recognition in scenes and posters that exist in
public places
The perception of Muslim undergraduates of Sri Lanka on the proposed amendments to the Sri Lankan Muslim marriage and divorce act
There has been a debatable situation in the society about the
proposed amendments to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act which is
applicable to Muslims living in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, this study has described
the views held by the Muslim students studying in Sri Lankan universities
about the particular debatable situations. This study has been conducted by
obtaining the data required for this purpose from students studying in state
and non-state universities. The objective of this study is to find the perception
of the Muslim student studying in universities on the amendments to the
Muslim marriage and divorce act. This research was conducted as an online
survey. When the responses of the participants are reviewed, the main facts
that appear are; that the majority of the students are aware of the current
Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act and the theoretical issues in the marriage
and divorce procedures under this Act and the quasi-judicial structure must
be further revised. In this way, the facts that they have pointed out through
This research about the amendments that should take place in this Muslim
Marriage and Divorce Act is important for the process of amending this Act
and this research shows that by implementing their ideas at the
practical level, the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act in force in Sri Lanka can
be taken to a more conclusive level
An empirical study on determinants of price earnings ratio: evidence from listed food, beverage, and tobacco companies in Colombo stock exchange
Purpose: The Price earnings ratio compares a stock’s price to earnings. By
showing the relationship between a company’s stock price and earnings per share
(EPS), the Price earnings ratio helps investors to value a stock and gauge market
expectations. The ratio is affected by several factors that are responsible for the
variations of Price earnings ratio. These variations of Price earnings ratio have
significant impact on investor’s perception. This paper attempts to identify the
factors and the relationships between the factors and Price earnings ratio of food,
beverage, and tobacco companies in Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE).
Design/methodology/approach: Based on simple sampling, data were taken for
this purpose from annual reports of 30 food, beverage, and tobacco companies
listed on the CSE for the five-year period from 2015 to 2019. The study focuses
on secondary data collected through the published annual reports of the sample.
Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis are
used to accomplish the objective of this paper.
Findings: Results revealed that dividend payout ratio and leverage ratio are
significant determinants of Price earnings ratio where these both variables have
positive influence on Price earnings ratio. Furthermore, return on equity and
earnings per share are negative insignificant determinants of Price earnings ratio.
Practical implications: Dividend payout ratio and leverage ratio have positive
correlation with price earnings ratio. Their significant values are less than the test
alpha values. Therefore, the researcher can accept the alternative hypothesis. It
can be statistically concluded that dividend payout ratio and leverage ratio have
positive significant relationship with price earnings ratio. Return on equity and
earnings per share have negative correlation with price earnings ratio. Significant
values are higher than the test alpha values. Therefore, the researcher can reject
the alternative hypothesis. It can be statistically concluded that return on equity
and earnings per share have negative insignificant relationship with price earnings
ratio
An anti-sitophilus oryzae bioactive substance's identification and analysis from plant extracts
The majority of the drug industry's work involves the discovery and analysis of
bioactive substances. Drugs derived from plants have more potential than those derived from
chemicals. Some pesticide compounds are prohibited from importation into Sri Lanka.
Therefore, it is more convenient to search for natural insecticides than synthetic chemicals. The
pest known as Sitophilus oryzae ruins rice kept in storage.There are plenty of medicinal plants
which act as therapeutic agents. Using conventional herbal remedies including Lantana camera
(leaf), Carica papaya (seeds), Ricinus communis (leaves), Calotropis giganta (flowers), and
Gliricidia sepium (leaves), and methanol as solvents (1:10 w: v), it has been achieved to
identify plants' insecticidal properties. The best pesticide plant, among the selected plants,
according to a one-week observation on mortality, was Gliricidia sepium (leaves). To display
the results of the total experiment, which also included information on the control test, a
survival analysis test was used. With the aid of a gradient solvent system, chromatographic
separations were used to fractionate Gliricidia sepium leaf extracts. Overall, twelve fractions
were gathered, and a mortality test took place to figure out the most bioactive fractions under
lab environments. The potential anti-Sitophilus oryzae ability was demonstrated from fraction
eleven. Continuously, instrumental analysis was used to describe and pinpoint a specific
bioactive component. In accordance with the results of the FTIR analysis, four significant
peaks were found, and they corresponded to the presence of the O-H bond, C-H bond
stretching, -CH3 bending, and C-O stretching at frequencies of 3338.14cm-1, 2939.41 cm-1,
1411.59 cm-1, and 1011.08 cm-1 respectively. Additional GC-MS analysis, when combined
with NIST library data, revealed the potential structure and mass fragments of anti Sitophilus
oryzae. Briefly, the mass to charge proportions for [C7H3]11˙, [C7H11O3]3˙, and [C7H8O]6˙ have
been observed in the CG-MS spectrum at m/z 87.0000, 143.071, and 108.508 respectively.

In-depth exploration of LLM’s adoption in shaping future expectations among Sri Lankan undergraduates
An extensive language model called ChatGPT
created by the OpenAI Foundation, has created a
significant impact in academia and industries,
especially due to its impressive performance,
particularly in synthesizing human-like results
from vast amounts of data. Despite numerous
research efforts on top of ChatGPT, there is a
paucity of literature providing in-depth analysis
among undergraduates, the group that utilizes
ChatGPT the most. Thus, this study addresses this
gap through an in-depth analysis based on data
collected through a structured questionnaire
administered to 171 undergraduates. The
questionnaire covered various aspects related to
the usage of ChatGPT, including awareness,
frequency of usage for learning, accuracy of
information, perceived improvements, and future
expectations from language models. Results
indicate that ChatGPT is well-known and used
frequently for academic reasons, especially for
preparing assignments and exams. While most
students appreciate LLMs, appropriately half
have encountered partially accurate answers,
revealing limitations in information accuracy.
Some students emphasize the importance of
promoting individual study and critical thinking
skills, while others advocate for more
comprehensive responses, including visuals and
video lectures. Many students claim that LLMs
have improved their academic performance, and
LLMs tend to be favored among these
undergraduates. These insights underscore the
potential for LLMs like ChatGPT to transform
learning and research experiences, emphasizing
the need for ethical surveillance and adaptation to
shifting student expectations while addressing
issues of accuracy and bias. This positions LLMs
as useful tools for knowledge acquisition and
exploration in academia's changing digital
landscape
