Lay Pastoring of the Parish: Prospering the Mission
In more dioceses each year there are parish communities living without a resident priest - more than 3000 priestless parishes in the USA. Several models of administration exist in this set of circumstances, each one aiming not only to maintain the parish, but also to prosper in carrying forward the mission of the church locally. Hintz shared her training and experience as a parish administrator.Presenter: Debra Hintz, Parish Director, Saint Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church (Milwaukee, WI)Higgins Hall 30
Interview with Robert Faulkner on The case for greatness: Honorable ambition and its critics, by Robert Faulkner
The Case for Greatness is a spirited look at political ambition, good and bad, with particular attention to honorable ambition. Robert Faulkner contends that too many modern accounts of leadership slight such things as determination to excel, good judgment, justice, and a sense of honor - the very qualities that distinguish the truly great. And here he offers an attempt to recover 'a reasonable understanding of excellence,' that which distinguishes a Franklin D. Roosevelt and a Lincoln from lesser leaders.Title supplied by cataloger
Interview with Thomas H. Groome on The Credo Series
The Credo Series comprises eleven textbooks – seven already published and four in progress – that together constitute a comprehensive presentation of the Catholic faith for use in high schools and youth ministry programs. As a complete catechetical curriculum The Credo Series explores concepts outlined in the document of The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) titled Doctrinal Elements of a Curriculum Framework for Young People of High School Age from a sound theological and pedagogical basis. Taking as its starting point the lived experience of students, The Credo Series challenges them to make their own lives a lived response to the teachings of the Catholic Church. The person and message of Jesus Christ is central to the series; and, through Credo, students will come to know both the Jesus of history and the Christ of faith. Prayer and meditative exercises are incorporated to help students experience the presence of God in their lives. The Credo Series utilizes Thomas Groome's "Shared Christian Praxis" pedagogy, which is adapted for the first time herein for high school catechesis. A strong social justice theme is consistently presented.Title supplied by cataloger
Interview with Amy Boesky on The story within: Personal essays on genetics and identity, edited by Amy Boesky
The contributors to The Story Within share powerful experiences of living with genetic disorders. Their stories illustrate the complexities involved in making decisions about genetic diseases: whether to be tested, who to tell, whether to have children, and whether and how to treat children medically, if treatment is available. More broadly, they consider how genetic information shapes the ways we see ourselves, the world, and our actions within it. People affected by genetic disease respond to such choices in varied and personal ways. These writers reflect that breadth of response, yet they share the desire to challenge a restricted sense of what "health" is or whose life has value. They write hoping to expand conversations about genetics and identity-to deepen debate and generate questions. They or their families are affected by Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, genetic deafness or blindness, schizophrenia, cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, fragile X, or Fanconi anemia. All of their stories remind us that genetic health is complicated, dynamic, and above all, deeply personal.Title supplied by cataloger
