Originally part of the Buck Estate purchased by Dominican College in 1935, which housed the Buck family summer home called Benincasa (built c.1884) after the surname of Saint Catherine of Siena Benincasa was originally used as a senior residence hall and campus club meeting space. Benincasa was demolished in 1961 to make space for the current library building. Communicating with the Public about Vietnam: How Transparent was Johnson in his Public Statements
The National Security Council is a crucial tool for American presidents when making tough foreign policy decisions that have the potential to affect the entire nation. Since its creation in 1947 under President Harry Truman, the National Security Council has provided presidents with advice on national security and foreign policies. It was used numerous times when presidents had to make decisions about the Vietnam War. However, it must be asked, how transparent were presidents with the public about the information they received from the National Security Council? This thesis examines President Johnson\u27s public statements about the Vietnam War and how he utilized the intelligence he received during National Security Council briefings. Scholars have previously looked at why and how presidents make foreign policy decisions. Building off the work of these scholars, I looked at the transparency of Johnson’s explanations to the public for how he reached decisions about the actions the United States would take during the Vietnam War during his presidency. Using content analysis to look at the National Security Council meeting minutes and public statements made by Johnson, I compared the subject matter to analyze the information he shared with the public. First, I found some transparency from Johnson regarding the importance of fighting communism as a reason for increasing support, including committing troops, and continued involvement in the Vietnam War. Next, I found that Johnson limited the details shared about strategy and national security. Lastly, I found a certain level of preservation by being dishonest about the negative outcomes of the war, especially among casualties
Evaluation of the Mycothiazole Chemotype as a Chemical Probe to Study Aging Reveals a New Diastereomer
The Indo-Pacific Marine sponge, Cacospongia mycofijiensis, continues to be a prolific source of bioactive compounds that have made significant advancements to biomedical research. Secondary metabolites isolated from this marine sponge exhibit unique bioactivity, targeting a variety of distinct biological pathways. One such chemotype is the potent mitochondria complex 1 (MC1) inhibitors (+)-(5Z)-(8S)-(14Z)-mycothiazole (1) and (-)-(5Z)-(8R)-(14Z)-mycothiazole (2) routinely isolated from Vanuatu and Tongan specimens of C. mycofijiensis, respectively. Small molecule inhibitors of the electron transport chain, such as 1 and 2, hold significant promise to function as chemical probes—over genetic manipulation approaches—for studying the relationship between mitochondrial stress and aging, as they overcome a major limitation of genetic approaches, which is a serious challenge to apply in genetic interventions involving clinical applications. In the course of scaling up the isolation of 1 to semi-synthesize (-)-(5Z)-(8S)-8-O-acetyl-(14Z)-mycothiazole (3) for ongoing preclinical development and the first aging study utilizing this chemotype, a new diastereomer, (-)-(5E)-(8R)-(14Z)-mycothiazole (4), was discovered. The structure of 4 was elucidated using HRMS and NMR, with its optical rotation value compared to that of 2. The IC50 of 4 in pancreatic (PANC-1) and liver (HepG2) cancer cell lines was determined to be 111.6 and 115.0 nM, respectively. Evaluation of 4 in Caenorhabditis elegans revealed a similar oxygen consumption rate (OCR) of 4 compared to 1 and 3, and all compounds (1, 3-4) significantly increased lifespan. Notably, the Z orientation at ∆5-6 of 1 is crucial for its picomolar cytotoxicity but not for mitochondrial inhibition. These findings underscore the importance for the stereochemistry of the diene-ol system of 1 in terms of its bioactivity, paving the way for further medicinal chemistry exploration of mycothiazole analogs in oncology, mitochondrial research, and aging studies
Planetary health learning objectives: foundational knowledge for global health education in an era of climate change.
Planetary health is an emerging field that emphasises that humans depend on a healthy Earth for survival and, conversely, that the sustainability of Earth systems is dependent on human behaviours. In response to member demands for resources to support teaching and learning related to planetary health, the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) convened a working group to develop a set of planetary health learning objectives (PHLOs) that would complement the existing ten CUGH global health learning objectives. The eight PHLOs feature Earth system changes, planetary boundaries, and climate change science; ecological systems and One Health; human health outcomes; risk assessment, vulnerability, and resilience; policy, governance, and laws (including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement); roles and responsibilities of governments, businesses, civil society organisations, other institutions, communities, and individuals for mitigation, adaptation, conservation, restoration, and sustainability; environmental ethics, human rights, and climate justice; and environmental literacy and communication. Educators who use the PHLOs as a foundation for teaching, curriculum design, and programme development related to the health-environment nexus will equip learners with a knowledge of planetary health science, interventions, and communication that is essential for future global health professionals
The Impact of Nursing Education on the Implementation of Kangaroo Care: Neurodevelopment Outcomes in Preterm Infants
Preterm birth poses a significant risk to the normal trajectory of brain development, particularly in the cortex, which is responsible for higher cognitive functions, motor control, and socio-emotional processing. However, Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) has emerged as an important early intervention capable of improving neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm newborns. This quantitative research proposal aims to assess the influence of nurse education on KMC practices, identifying pivotal periods in infancy when KMC has the most significant impact on neurodevelopment outcomes in preterm infants. The literature critique focuses on the efficacy of nursing education, the optimization of KMC regarding duration and frequency, and its association with positive neurodevelopmental outcomes. This research proposal entails a true experimental study exploring the optimal frequency and duration of KMC sessions, intending to provide persuasive evidence of neurodevelopmental benefits for preterm infants. Fifty mother-preterm baby pairs will be randomly assigned to either a control group or an intervention group. Bayley Scales of Infant Development and the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales will be used to evaluate the outcomes of this study. Following the completion of the research proposal, it is anticipated that nursing professionals will gain valuable insights, enabling them to effectively educate parents on practices that enhance neurodevelopmental outcomes
Effective Classroom Management Practices and the Training Needs for Beginning Educators
Driven by the overarching goal of enhancing classroom management practices and addressing the training and support needs of new educators, this qualitative research project aimed to uncover insights necessary for enhancing learning environments and improving teacher and student well-being. Conducted across diverse elementary school settings in California and Washington, the study engaged eleven elementary school teachers from varied backgrounds and experience levels, who were recruited through convenience and snowball sampling methods. Data included a combination of surveys and individual interviews, which were analyzed using an initial coding process to identify themes and a focused coding approach to refine and deepen the understanding of these themes.
Findings point to teacher qualities (such as patience, adaptability, and relationship building) as well as the importance of consistent routines, student engagement, and differentiation as fundamental teaching strategies. Additionally, findings address common challenges in classroom management such as resource limitations, insufficient training, and external factors impacting classroom dynamics.
This research contributes to the academic conversation by providing a comprehensive overview of the multifaceted nature of effective classroom management. By integrating essential teaching qualities, strategies, and training needs for new teachers, the research reveals their interconnectedness and dependency on one another. As a result, this study offers actionable recommendations for policy and practice, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of education and teacher well-being
What\u27s the Problem: Teacher Stress and Student Behavior
With student behavior and teacher stress being directly linked, there is a lack of insight into how teachers are managing that both in and out of the classroom (Clunies‐Ross, Little, & Kienhuis, 2008). This research highlights the impacts teachers have on their students, both positive and negative. It also offers insight into coping strategies teachers can use in order to maintain a positive classroom environment. I interviewed and collected reflective journals from four teachers with varied levels of experience and grade levels in a singular public elementary school. In the data collection process, common themes included personal and professional stressors, classroom and behavior management tools and strategies, and calmness in the classroom including self-care and mindfulness practices. This research comments on coping strategies and management strategies teachers are using to navigate the impact of their stresses on their students. Teachers can utilize this information to inform their proactive and reactive strategies in the classroom
Optimizing Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Prevention and Education: In Adult ICU Settings
Background: Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) in adult intensive care patient units (ICU) is one of the most common and deadly nosocomial infections today. Studies have identified a gap in intensive care nurse ventilator education and compliance with hospital protocols. Overall increasing the rates of VAP and morbidity. Hospitals worldwide have shown a decrease in VAP rates after inheriting VAP-bundles\u27\u27. This includes nurse specific interventions and assessments as a preventative measure. However, studies failed to demonstrate which bundle interventions directly correspond to the prevention of VAP. Purpose: Address all components of education, a nurse’s ability to properly identify and understand the pathology of VAP, protocol compliance, to reducing VAP rates and identifying weak points in current hospital practices. Method: An observational longitudinal intervention study will be conducted in an adult ICU setting. The initial phase utilizes an uncontrolled group, setting a baseline. Followed by the subsequent phase, where participants become a controlled group, after the introduction of ventilator bundles. The data will be collected using, in person observation of nurse adherence and skill competency, along with providing educational classes on a bi-weekly basis. Concluding with a monthly questionnaire, that compares and reevaluates nurses\u27 knowledge of preventative measures and treatment for VAP patients. Results: Preliminary findings suggest when conducting a continuous education program and implementing a “Ventilator Bundle” approach, VAP rates drastically drop. Conclusion: Each bundle included five main interventions (elevation of HOB 35°-45°, daily “sedation vacation & assessment of readiness to extubate, PUD prophylaxis DVT prophylaxis, and daily oral care with chlorhexidine). All interventions are pulled from the IHI bundle, indicating potential for making this the gold standard protocol. Incorporation of Nutrition Education with Medication Inject to sustain Weight Loss
Nationwide prevalence of obesity is related to comorbidities including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. The United States spends nearly 1,861 of medical costs than those with healthy weight (CDC, 2022). Overweight individuals experience chronic health issues, resuling in a significant financial burden due to increased costs associated with medical treatment. Ozempic is a newly approved drug accepted by the FDA in 2017 to treat diabetes but is now gradually being implemented as a weight loss medication. It is used in conjunction with exercise and diet in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control; however, continuous nutrition treatment is necessary in order to prevent rebound weight gain. Obesity is a significant public health challenge in the United States resulting from lack of access to education and networks to health and nutrition. Ethnicity and a community’s socio-economic factors play a role in proper access to education of healthy management of weight loss. Further problems arise when young adults discontinue weight loss medication without the proper support of nutrition education and an exercise regime. In order to sustain clinical weight loss and decrease the susceptibility of comorbid risks, lifestyle interventions are advised (Amaro, 2022). Advancing School Nursing Practice: A Novel Approach to Screening for Gastrointestinal Disorders in Children
California schools currently only screen for vision and hearing, leaving many other health concerns unaddressed. Among these, gastrointestinal (GI) health is particularly significant, as digestive disorders can lead to severe consequences, like malnutrition and stunted growth.
