The Power of Plate & Knowledge: Nutrition’s Role in PCOS Management for Asian American Women
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a metabolic endocrine disorder affecting 8–11% of women worldwide, with 70% remaining undiagnosed (WHO, 2023). It presents with symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, insulin resistance, high testosterone levels, anxiety, depression, and infertility, significantly impacting quality of life and health (OASH, 2021). The symptoms of PCOS can severely impact women’s quality of life, mental health, and long-term well-being. Insulin resistance contributes to symptom severity and a 50% likelihood of developing diabetes or prediabetes by age 40 (Wang et al., 2011). Women with PCOS face a threefold increased risk of endometrial, ovarian, and breast cancers (Barry et al., 2014). Despite its prevalence, many women with PCOS struggle to manage their symptoms effectively. Healthcare providers commonly treat PCOS symptoms with medications such as birth control, Spironolactone, and Metformin (Radosh, 2009). However, early intervention is crucial in reducing the risk of developing more severe health complications related to PCOS, yet there remains a lack of education for both providers and patients among the Asian American community on lifestyle and dietary changes that could help manage the condition.https://scholar.dominican.edu/nursing-student-research-posters/1112/thumbnail.jp

Throughout the decades, advancements in
technology have been surpassing limits that
were thought impossible. Every day these
breakthroughs are improving modern
surgery whether it be enhancing precision
on surgical sites, increasing accuracy of
procedure, or reducing recovery rates for
patients. Among the newly increasing
innovations, the implementation of robotics
systems and artificial intelligence (AI) into
the surgical field has emerged into
becoming a transformative force, especially
within a context as delicate as tumor removal.
This study explores the numerous benefits
of incorporating robotics and artificial
intelligence (AI) in tumor removal surgeries.
We investigate how these innovations
improve surgical accuracy, reduce
postoperative complications, and boost
overall patient outcomes. This research
aims to highlight the transformative impact
of these technologies on the future of
oncological surgery, establishing new
benchmarks for surgical quality and patient
care through a review of current literature,

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Postpartum Depression and Suicide Prevention in Asian Women
Postpartum Depression (PPD) remains a substantial contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality. One in seven women experience PPD, especially among Asian Americans because of the stigma surrounding the discussion of mental health which is often overlooked and misdiagnosed. One significant repercusssion of untreated PPD is the risk for suicidal ideation, which is the second leading contributor of mortality during the postnatal stage (Carlson et al., 2024).
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) consists of relaxation exercises, stress-reduction techniques, pain management strategies and effective problem-solving strategies. 1936 On the Steps of Benincasa
Originally part of the Buck Estate purchased by Dominican College in 1935, which housed the Buck family summer home called Benincasa (built c.1884) after the surname of Saint Catherine of Siena Benincasa was originally used as a senior residence hall and campus club meeting space. Benincasa was demolished in 1961 to make space for the current library building. The Impact of Spanish Language Training for Labor and Delivery Nurses on Postpartum Depression Incidence among Hispanic Women
Postpartum depression and anxiety are experienced by 70-80% of new mothers, and the likelihood is twice as high for Hispanic women compared to caucasian women. Supportive techniques to help monolingual mothers in labor are lacking. A translator\u27s assistance on the hospital floor, such as a video call from an iPad, is often impersonal and lacks the supportive atmosphere that women preparing to give birth need. The primary objective of this study is to explore the potential benefits of providing Spanish-speaking courses to labor and delivery nurses, particularly in cultivating a nurturing and supportive atmosphere for Hispanic mothers during childbirth. By exploring this, this research aims to see whether such interventions could contribute to a decrease in the incidence of Postpartum Depression (PPD) among Hispanic Spanish-speaking mothers. To address this research question, a quasi-experimental design will be implemented, allowing for an investigation into the impact of language training on healthcare providers. The study will involve the recruitment of a convenient sample comprising 100 Hispanic Spanish-speaking women; through a quantitative approach, data will be collected via pre and post-tests. The anticipated outcome of the study is to support the hypothesis that the integration of Spanish language training for healthcare personnel holds promise in enhancing communication and support tailored specifically for Hispanic women. Consequently, it is hypothesized that this enhancement in communication and support would show a reduction in the risk of postpartum depression. This comprehensive approach aims to shed light on the potential effectiveness of language-based interventions for PPD among Hispanic mothers, thereby contributing valuable insights to the field of maternal care and highlighting the importance of culturally sensitive practices in improving maternal mental health outcomes
Challenging Norms, Creating Art: An Anti-Ableist Lens on Visual Arts Education
This research explored the active role of disabled artists in their own descriptions of meaning making through their artistic process, utilizing phenomenological research to examine the lived experiences of intellectually or developmentally disabled and neurodiverse adult artists in the Bay Area. The literary study element of the research strove to understand and employ anti-ableism and constructivism as framing lenses, while also reviewing literature on issues such as access barriers, traditional quality standards in arts education, and the de-emphasis of art within curriculum funding priorities, indicating a need for continued reform toward promoting inclusive and process-oriented art education. With a focus on ensuring informed consent, confidentiality, and validity in data analysis to fill a gap in qualitative research and advocate for the importance of art for special populations, this qualitative study explored how visual artists with disabilities make and articulate their creative processes and final products, revealing four basic themes—Material Choices and Use, Methods, Inspirations, and Identity—derived from participants\u27 own words, showcasing their diverse approaches to art media, design, inspiration sources, and experiences with disability. This research ultimately illustrated their methodical, creative, intentional approach to leaving their mark on the world despite societal expectations. Undertaking this project allowed me to merge my interests in art, education, and disability justice, fostering personal academic growth while amplifying the voices of participating artists in academic literature to advocate for social justice policies and equity. My hope is to inspire empathy and sensitivity towards the experiences of people with disabilities within society
Screening effectiveness of compounds for delay of Alzheimer’s Disease pathogenesis in Caenorhabditis elegans and mammalian cell culture
Alzheimer\u27s Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that commonly progresses with age resulting in loss of cognitive function. AD pathology is characterized by amyloid-beta (Aß) plaques and tau neurofibrillary tangles in the brain1.
Animal models of AD have allowed scientists to better understand the disease pathology and test potential therapeutics2. Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), a tractable animal model, and mammalian cell culture models provide a way of rapidly screening compounds for effectiveness in delaying AD pathogenesis. In this study we specifically focused on the Aß pathogenesis of AD. Previously, a high throughput screen with a natural product library and using C. elegans AD model from our laboratory showed that two compounds kinetin (KT) and retrorsine (RTS), delayed Aß induced pathogenesis. In another study from our laboratory using a thermotolerance survival assay as a screening method, azure B (AzB) a metabolite of methylene blue (MB) was identified as a hit compound from the L5300 Mitochondria Target Activation Library (Targetmol). AzB also delayed Aß induced pathogenesis in the C. elegans AD models. In the present study, we performed a detailed investigation on KT, RTS, MB and Azure C (AzC), another metabolite of MB with focus on lifespan studies and Aß induced pathogenesis studies.
Our studies show that compound KT and RTS delay onset of pathogenesis caused by Aß expression in C. elegans muscle and neuronal models. In the C. elegans muscle model this delay in pathogenesis was not dependent on NRF2 (SKN-1 in C. elegans). KT extended lifespan in C. elegans when exposed to it during development. RTS did not extend lifespan in C. elegans. In cell culture models, KT but not RTS treatment reduced oxidative stress levels induced by Aß in microglia cells. KT also protected against glutamate-induced toxicity in mouse neuronal cells. AzC and MB also extended lifespan under particular conditions and delayed onset of Aß induced pathogenesis in the C. elegans AD muscle model. In cell culture models, AzC and MB treatment reduced oxidative stress levels induced by Aß and protected neuronal cells against glutamate-induced toxicity. Our work demonstrates that KT, RTS, AzC and MB have positive effects in AD models. Further work, would help us better understand whether these compounds could potentially be used as a therapeutic agent in AD
