Racial Concordance Perceptions of Post-op African-American Patients

    Get PDF
African-Americans have historically faced significant health disparities, which persist due to implicit racial biases and a lack of cultural competency among non-Black healthcare providers. These disparities often result in poorer health outcomes and diminished patient satisfaction. One potential factor in mitigating these issues is racial concordance, the alignment of racial identity between patients and providers (Jetty et al., 2022). However, only 6.3% of the nursing workforce identifies as Black or African-American (Smiley et al., 2023), limiting opportunities for racially concordant care. While racial concordance may foster trust, communication, and comfort in healthcare settings, research on its importance to African-American Patients—especially in the postoperative context—remains scarce. Understanding African-American patients\u27 perceptions of racial concordance in their postoperative care experiences is essential for improving satisfaction and equity in healthcare delivery.https://scholar.dominican.edu/nursing-student-research-posters/1109/thumbnail.jp

Educational Program on Depression and Anxiety for Low Socioeconomic Postpartum Latina Mothers

    Get PDF
Postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum anxiety are common mental health conditions that women experience after childbirth. PPD involves intense feelings of extreme sadness, and diminished interests in activities that once brought them happiness. Postpartum anxiety involves constant worry and fear, often centered on the well-being of the baby. Symptoms may include restlessness or irritability, panic attacks, and trouble concentrating or sleeping. Barriers to treating depression and anxiety among Latinas include a lack of awareness or understanding of mental health issues. (Lopez et al., 2018). Health Literacy refers to the individual\u27s ability to understand and process health-related information. By assessing a patient\u27s health literacy, nurses can tailor their education and interventions more effectively, to reduce risk of negative health outcomes. However, factors such as stigma surrounding mental illness, reluctance to seek help, and concerns about healthcare cost can prevent individuals from accessing health services. Cultural beliefs about mental health can influence an individual\u27s ability to recognize symptoms and seek care. Latinas, especially those with lower socioeconomic status are less likely to utilize health services due to cultural stigma, as well as concerns regarding the addictive nature of depression medications (Green et al., 2017).https://scholar.dominican.edu/nursing-student-research-posters/1121/thumbnail.jp

Gothic Echoes: Cathedrals From the Bay Area to France

    No full text
Gothic cathedrals have always captured the imagination, standing as true testaments to medieval craftsmanship and spirituality. These structures are more than just beautiful buildings though—they reflect a time when architecture was about ambition, devotion, and a deep desire to connect with something bigger than ourselves. The way these cathedrals rise up, with their breathtaking details and towering spires, still makes people stop and stare in awe, feeling a sense of amazement even today. But Gothic architecture is about more than just admiring its design; it’s about understanding how different places and times are intertwined with each other. In this project, I’ll explore the connections between Gothic architecture in France and the Gothic Revival style in the Bay Area. Focusing on three key places—Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Saint-Chapelle Cathedral in Paris, and Aix (Saint Sauveur) Cathedral in Aix-en-Provence—I’ll show how these structures link cultures across time while keeping alive a shared spiritual and historical heritage. Ultimately, this project shows how architecture can bring together both the past and present, and connect different parts of the world through common themes of faith, art, and shared human experience and memory.https://scholar.dominican.edu/mapping-bay-area-memory-places/1008/thumbnail.jp

War, Remembrance, and Katýn: How Public Memory Sites Affirm National Identity

    No full text
The nation of Poland had a well-established national identity based on its culture, religion, language, and history prior to its occupation by the USSR, but this identity was suppressed in the sixty years of Soviet control from 1939 to 1989. After achieving their independence, Poles reexamined their history and identity, in addition to choosing which aspects of Soviet history and identity to keep or do away with. This thesis examines the relationship between public memory sites in or about Poland and the affirmation of the Polish national identity after Polish independence from the Soviet Union in 1989. Building on the existing literature on the relationship between public memory sites and monuments in affirming a nation’s identity and the collective memory of cultures whose history has been attempted to be erased, this thesis asks, to what extent do public memory sites play a role in affirming Poland’s national identity as an independent nation after gaining their independence from the Soviet Union in 1989? A historical method combined with semiotics was used to analyze seven sites and monuments dedicated to the Katýn massacre to examine how these sites have furthered Poland’s post-Soviet national identity and established collective public memory. This thesis argues that public memory sites are integral in affirming Poland’s national identity as an independent nation. The conclusion of this study is that evidence was found that links Polish national identity and the physical spaces in which history is remembered and memorialized

ICU Nurse Mental Health: Telehealth versus In-Person Therapy Effectiveness

    Get PDF
Background Nurses working within high-stress specialties, such as Intensive Care Units (ICUs), often face a lack of resources aimed at supporting their mental health. The expectation for the nurses is to independently manage their psychological well-being based on their knowledge and educational background. However, many times it is difficult to manage persistent stress, anxiety, or depression and this could adversely affect the quality of patient care and eventually lead to burnout. Telehealth therapy has become more readily available and used since the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to two forms of treatment delivery. Currently, there is limited research on the effectiveness of telehealth compared to the traditional form of in-person office visits. Objective The primary aim of this literature review and proposal is to improve the mental well-being of ICU nurses while assessing and comparing the effectiveness of telehealth versus in-person therapy in reducing anxiety. The literature review summarizes findings from six studies, categorizing them according to their effect on mental health and the benefits and barriers associated with in-person and telehealth therapy. Method This research proposal will encompass a mixed-methods study involving 25 participants for individual cognitive behavioral therapy, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Participants will be recruited from hospitals with ICU departments through emails/flyers. Data will be collected pre- and post-intervention through questionnaires and surveys along with two test tools called the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). It is hypothesized that telehealth therapy will be more effective in reducing anxiety compared to in-person therapy in ICU nurses

Unleashing Wellness: Exploring the Impact of Pet Therapy on Anxiety Reduction, Quality of Life, and Treatment Adherence in Pediatric Oncology Patients

    Get PDF
Pet therapy is a complementary intervention that involves the interaction between a person and animal, with the focus of improving psychological well-being within diverse populations. In particular, children with oncological disorders have increases in anxiety and stress levels, therefore it is imperative to study the impact of animal interventions within this population. This literature critique explores the impact of pet therapy interventions on anxiety, stress, and quality of life perceptions in pediatric oncology patients. This research proposal will investigate how animal therapy interactions within pediatric oncology patients influence their anxiety levels and perceptions of quality of life and how these factors impact treatment adherence. This quantitative true research experiment will be conducted over 12 weeks with a sample size of 200 participants. The participants will be randomly divided into either the control or experimental group. The control group will attend appointments without the animal interaction, while the experimental group will have pet therapy interactions twice per week over the course of 12 weeks. Anxiety and quality of life perceptions will be measured using the PedsQL and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory tools prior to the study and after the 12 weeks to determine the impact of hospital visits, with or without animal intervention, on quality of life and anxiety levels within pediatric oncology patients. For 1 year after the interventions are conducted, participants scheduled and attended appointments will be evaluated through patient charts to determine how pet therapy interactions impact on quality of life and anxiety lead to increased treatment adherence. The researchers anticipate that animal interventions will improve anxiety and quality of life, leading to increased treatment adherence within this population

Empowering Achievement: Investigating Leadership, Agency, and Access for First-Generation College Students

    Get PDF
This research demonstrates that first-generation college students excel when they can be open to new spaces, people, and experiences and have access to robust support systems and the necessary resources to build solid personal self-efficacy. The intentionality behind this research is grounded in students finding their agency and self- efficacy to become strong and confident leaders within their communities and future workplaces. One of the theoretical frameworks this research touches on is Vince Tinto’s interactionalist theory of student persistence, which identifies the importance of academic and social integration in higher education students. All six participants in the study were in their early twenties; most were female and Hispanic or Latino/a identifying. All participants were current students at the same small, private, four-year university and had no immediate family members who attended any form of higher education. Qualitative data was collected through in-depth, 1-1 interviews; throughout the interviews, relevant reactions, themes, and environmental factors were noted and analyzed. Some relevant findings were that first-generation students struggle with the willpower to continue through school due to constant barriers and a lack of support and resources. This leads to feelings of imposter syndrome, and students who utilized resources effectively had higher self-efficacy and enjoyment of their higher education experience
