Effectiveness of Music Therapy in Managing Pain and Anxiety in Pediatric Burn Patients Compared to Traditional Methods Alone

Introduction: Burn injuries are among the most painful conditions for children. While pharmacological interventions are commonly used, non-pharmacological strategies like music therapy are gaining attention for their potential to improve patient outcomes. Previous research indicates that music therapy can reduce pain and anxiety in various settings, but its impact on pediatric burn patients remains underexplored. Objective: This study aims to explore the effectiveness of music therapy in managing pain and anxiety in pediatric burn patients, comparing it to traditional pain management methods alone. Research Question: Does music therapy affect pain and anxiety in pediatric burn unit patients when added to traditional pain management methods? Methodology: This quasi-experimental study will include around 100 Pediatric burn patients, ages 5-18, will be assigned to either a music therapy group or a control group receiving standard care. Participants in the music therapy group will receive a 30-minute classical music session after traditional pain management, and pain and anxiety levels will be assessed before and after the session. The control group receives standard care, but is offered music therapy after data is collected. Data Analysis: Data will be analyzed using quantitative measures (FACES Pain Scale, Pediatric Anxiety Rating Scale). Paired and independent t-tests will compare pre- and post-session pain scores and anxiety levels between the two groups. Conclusion: The study aims to contribute to the understanding of music therapy\u27s role in pediatric burn care and potentially offer a more holistic approach to pain and anxiety management in this vulnerable population.https://scholar.dominican.edu/nursing-student-research-posters/1148/thumbnail.jp

    Gramacita

    No full text
This thesis was born from a play I had written in 2022. This final piece is an adaptation from a playscript to a novella. Gramacita, the colorful matriarch of the family, and her grandson (Max) have an unbreakable bond, but Max is keeping a secret from her. He grapples with telling her his truth, but Gramacita leaves this world before he does. After Max accepts his best friend’s invitation to a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration, he begins communicating with his grandmother. By learning about his roots, he is able to make peace with Gramacita’s death. Will she make peace with Max’s secret, or did she know all along

The Health Impact of Clinical Training on Nursing Students in Cambodia

Background: Clinical training presents significant challenges for nursing students worldwide, particularly evident in developing countries like Cambodia, where these difficulties are intensified by a lack of training, resources, and health issues like stress and fatigue. Many students struggle without adequate guidance, forcing them to navigate complex clinical environments independently. These factors not only impact students’ confidence and academic performance, but also their health and well-being. Through this study, we can gain insight into nursing in a developing country that hasn’t been widely studied, contributing to global nursing research. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the health impact of clinical training on nursing students in Cambodia. Method: A qualitative exploratory descriptive approach will be used. Research will be conducted among 10 nursing students who are either in their final clinical rotations or have just completed them in a Cambodian Hospital. They will participate in semi-structured interviews that will last 45 to 60 minutes. A bilingual translator, proficient in both Khmer and English, will conduct the interview, record, and transcribe the data collected from the interview with the researcher who has some knowledge of Khmer present. The interviews will focus on the challenges faced during clinical experiences and their effects on the students’ health. Data Collection & Analysis: Participant responses will be recorded and translated to identify all the emerging patterns and themes using content analysis. Conclusion: We anticipate that the students have faced challenges that not only hinder academic performance, but also have significant implications for students’ physical and mental health due to stresses of the clinical environment and lack of support by the nurses and nursing preceptors. By understanding these issues, educators and policymakers can implement interventions to better support nursing students, ultimately improving the quality of patient care

Educating Nurses on Culturally Competent Intimate Partner Violence Care

Purpose The purpose of this research proposal is to examine the impact of mandatory training for labor and delivery nurses on culturally sensitive care for pregnant women who have experienced intimate partner violence. It aims to address gaps in provider training by evaluating improvement in screening rates, enhanced confidence, and effective interventions. Methods This study will recruit nurses from different labor and delivery units from different hospitals. This study will use a pre-test and post-test design to assess the effectiveness of the training. The evaluation will measure the changes in knowledge, confidence, and screening practices before and after training. Results If the findings are statistically significant then it will prove the hypothesis that training and education for labor and delivery nurses will increase knowledge and awareness, increase screening and identification, and satisfy patient outcomes for pregnant women of different cultures who have experienced intimate partner violence. Conclusion The information gained from this research bridges the gap in provider education which leads to improved patient care, increased screening rates, and effective interventions. Implementing these mandatory training on culturally competent care will enhance the nurses’ ability to support pregnant women

Trauma-informed Care: A Catalyst for Strong Therapeutic Alliances

Trauma-informed care (TIC) is a framework designed to support trauma survivors and is centered around 4 R’s: realizing the holistic impact of trauma, recognizing symptoms of dysregulation, responding to needs appropriately, and resisting retraumatization (SAMHSA, 2014). The present study explored how receiving TIC impacted a client’s perception of the therapeutic alliance. Participants consisted of 118 adults who have attended individual outpatient psychotherapy. More than half of participants worked with a master’s level psychotherapist (e.g Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker), followed by a third working with a psychologist. The remaining participants worked with a psychiatrist or pre-licensed professional. The measures used in the present study were the Patient Trauma-Informed Care Survey (Kokokyi et al., 2021), Brief-Revised Working Alliance Inventory (BR-WAI; Horvath & Greenberg, 1989; Mallinckrodt & Tekie, 2015), and Client Assessment of Multicultural Competent Behavior scale (CAMBC; Oh & Shillingford-Butler, 2021). A series of Pearson R correlations found a significant positive relationship between receiving TIC and experiencing safety, alongside collaborating with a mental health provider, while a significant moderate relationship between receiving TIC and experiencing multiculturally competent counseling was found. Additionally, participants who discussed TIC with their providers reported higher levels of TIC. The findings of this study will begin to bridge the literature gap regarding patient outcomes of TIC

Technol-OT and CreATivity: Implementing Occupational Therapy (OT) and Assistive Technology (AT) into Art and Music for Adults with Disabilities

Background: Assistive technology (AT) holds the potential to enhance independence and participation among individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disorders (IDD) and physical disabilities. AT supports for adults with these disabilities remain limited in community settings after they transition out of the K–12 educational system. Addressing this gap requires collaborative, client-centered approaches to implementing effective AT solutions. Purpose: This project aims to assess and address the AT needs of Marin Ventures (MV), an adult engagement day program, and seeks to develop and implement sustainable AT applications to enhance creative expression and communication for MV clients. Methods: A needs assessment was conducted through site visits and collaborative meetings with MV staff and clients. Interventions included the exploration of no-, low-, and high-tech AT tools such as environmental adaptation, switch-control and eye-gaze technology, 3D design, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Emphasis was placed on creating accessible programs for art and music expression. Results: The implementation of AT solutions demonstrated increased engagement, independence, and satisfaction among clients, while providing staff with sustainable strategies for continued use. Discussion & Implications for Occupational Therapy: This project emphasizes the value of client-centered, interdisciplinary approaches in AT interventions to enhance meaningful participation. Using the HAAT model ensured accessible solutions, addressing barriers to AT adoption in adult day programs. Occupational therapy plays a vital role in fostering collaboration, advancing DEIJAB principles, and bridging gaps in AT access to improve participation and quality of life for adults with disabilities

Resilience Programming for Occupational Therapy Students: A Mixed-Methods Exploration

Occupational therapy students and practitioners experience high levels of stress due to classroom and professional demands which can lead to burnout. Resilience is found as a protective factor against stress and burnout. Resilience can be defined as the different ways systems work together to achieve better results than expected, after experiencing adversity. Concepts related to resilience include social connection, self-efficacy, and mindfulness. Research done on resilience programming for students has been shown to support students in navigating the hardships of college. Resilience programming has been found to be effective for occupational therapists in the workplace during high work demands. However, there is very little existing research done on resilience programming for occupational therapy students. This research study investigated a resilience program for OT students at Dominican University of California and specifically aimed to explore the perceived value, utilization, and impact of the programming. This study utilized a mixed-methods explanatory design consisting of an online survey and semi- structured interviews. Results from the survey showed that students found co-curricular resources most valuable, with curricular being second, and passive programming being third. Results from the survey showed that curricular programming was the most utilized, then passive programming, and third was co-curricular programming. In the interviews, students cited social connection in their responses as to why resilience programming was valuable. Barriers to participation included lack of accessibility due to academic workloads, commuting to events, student work schedules, and funding. This research provides valuable insights for other OT programs to develop resilience initiatives and the role of resilience in preparing students for future careers
