Influence of Dietary Intake on Carotid Maximum Intima–Media Thickness in Children Conceived Through Assisted Reproductive Techniques

    No full text
Background/Objectives: Research on the relationship between nutritional characteristics and their impact on cardiovascular remodeling in children conceived by assisted reproductive technology (ART) is limited. We aimed to explore the influence of postnatal nutrition on vascular wall thickness in children conceived through ART, comparing them with a naturally conceived control group. Methods: A prospective observational cohort of 3-year-old children (n = 83) was analyzed, including 41 conceived ART and 42 spontaneously conceived. The carotid maximum intima–media thickness (max-cIMT), a strong predictor of myocardial infarction, was measured and dietary intake was assessed through 3-day food records. Dietary data were compared between groups, and the relationship between nutritional intake and max-cIMT were explored. In the ART group, the k-means clustering method identified distinct dietary patterns. Results: ART children showed significantly higher max-cIMT values, as well as increased dietary intake of saturated fatty acids (SFA), total proteins, and animal proteins compared to those spontaneously conceived. Three cluster groups were identified based on dietary intake in the ART group; those ART children whose dietary pattern closely resembled the control group exhibited lower max-cIMT values. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that ART children exhibited a distinct dietary pattern characterized by higher consumption of total and animal proteins and SFA, compared to those conceived naturally. Further research is required to unravel the interindividual differences among individuals conceived through ART, enabling the formulation of precise nutritional recommendations for personalized nutrition and preventive medicine

    No full text

European Society for Organ Transplantation Consensus Statement on Biomarkers in Liver Transplantation

    No full text
Currently, one-year survival following liver transplantation (LT) exceeds 90% in large international registries, and LT is considered definitive treatment for patients with end-stage liver disease and liver cancer. Recurrence of disease, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), significantly hampers post-LT outcomes. An optimal approach to immunosuppression (IS), including safe weaning, may benefit patients by mitigating the effect on recurrent diseases, as well as reducing adverse events associated with over-/under-IS, including chronic kidney disease (CKD). Prediction of these outcome measures—disease recurrence, CKD, and immune status—has long been based on relatively inaccurate clinical models. To address the utility of new biomarkers in predicting these outcomes in the post-LT setting, the European Society of Organ Transplantation (ESOT) and International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS) convened a working group of experts to review literature pertaining to primary disease recurrence, development of CKD, and safe weaning of IS. Summaries of evidence were presented to the group of panelists and juries to develop guidelines, which were discussed and voted in-person at the Consensus Conference in Prague November 2022. The consensus findings and recommendations of the Liver Working Group on new biomarkers in LT, clinical applicability, and future needs are presented in this article

The use of video feedback to promote developmentally supportive parent-child interactions with young children with ASD or at risk: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial (VIFEPOPA-RCT)

    No full text
Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulties in social communication and interaction, and repetitive and restrictive behaviors and interests from an early age. ASD often negatively affects caregiver-child interactions, caregiver emotional well-being and self-efficacy, and quality of family life. Positive caregiver–child interactions are crucial for good developmental outcomes, leading to the development of Parent-Mediated Interventions (PMIs). PMIs tend to follow an expert model where professionals provide direct instruction on treatment techniques and parental behaviors. However, research supports a shift towards a more collaborative and reflective approach, using coaching strategies that highlight caregiver strengths and encourage self-reflection. This study tests a video-feedback intervention (VFI) with parents of young children at risk of ASD. Methods: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) with 60 families, recruited from Early Intervention Centers in Spain, meeting inclusion criteria: adequate use of internet, child aged 24–36 months with a high risk of ASD (M-CHAT-R score ≥ 8), and participant primary caregiver (mother or father) with high anxiety, depression, or parental stress (score ≥ 1 SD above M), and low or medium–low developmentally supportive parental behaviors (PICCOLO score ≤ 40). Families will be randomly assigned to an intervention group (receiving usual services plus VFI) or a control group (usual services). The intervention includes twelve bi-weekly 90-min sessions over six months, with the caregiver. Outcome measures include parenting behaviors, emotional state, self-efficacy, family quality of life, and child development collected at pre-intervention, post- intervention and six-month follow-up. Discussion: The study will assess whether the intervention enhances developmentally supportive parental behaviors, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, and family quality of life, with a secondary positive impact on child development. If proven effective, it could be a cost-effective intervention with both short and long-term benefits

Religious crossroads and diplomacy in the Atlantic. The kingdom of Congo versus Iberian preeminence (16th-17th centuries)

The connection that is created between Africa, Europe and America through theslave trade in the Atlantic space, forms an axis that supports the broad relationships and in-terests that are established from the Christianization of the Kingdom of the Congo. The role played by the missionaries was increasingly prominent in the articulation of net-works of influence and negotiation, outside of their pastoral work. After the secession ofPortugal and the obstruction of the Spanish monarchy until the Holy See recognized its inde-pendence, the conflict moved to the missionary areas of influence in Africa, especially in thekingdom of Congo. The Spanish Capuchins were appointed ambassadors of the Congo to theHoly See in various European capitals without the Portuguese approval. A hostility that con-stituted a source of problems and conflicts that was further accentuated with the appearanceof Dutch interests on the African coasts. After the Spanish monarchy lost control of the slavemarkets at the hands of the Portuguese and Dutch, a new strategy of rapprochement with thekingdom of Congo was launched by sending missions. These disagreements ended after the defeat of the Kingdom of the Congo in 1665, whichclosed the way for more Spanish Capuchins to enter Western Central Africa

The thermal index of neutron-star matter in the virial approximation

    No full text
Motivated by gravitational-wave observations of binary neutron-star mergers, we study the thermal index of low-density, high-temperature dense matter. We use the virial expansion to account for nuclear interaction effects. We focus on the region of validity of the expansion, which reaches 10−3 fm−3 at T = 5 MeV up to almost saturation density at T = 50 MeV. In pure neutron matter, we find an analytical expression for the thermal index, and show that it is nearly density and temperature independent, within a fraction of a percent of the noninteracting, nonrelativistic value of Γth ≈ 5/3. When we incorporate protons, electrons, and photons, we find that the density and temperature dependence of the thermal index changes significantly. We predict a smooth transition between an electron-dominated regime with Γth ≈ 4/3 at low densities to a neutron-dominated region with Γth ≈ 5/3 at high densities. This behavior is by and large independent of the proton fraction and is not affected by nuclear interactions in the region where the virial expansion converges. We model this smooth transition analytically and provide a simple but accurate parameterization of the inflection point between these regimes. When compared to tabulated realistic models of the thermal index, we find an overall agreement at high temperatures that weakens for colder matter. The discrepancies can be attributed to the missing contributions of nuclear clusters. The virial approximation provides a clear and physically intuitive framework for understanding the thermal properties of dense matter, offering a computationally efficient solution that makes it particularly well suited for the regimes relevant to neutron-star binary remnants
