Research and innovation 2019
Get PDFResearch and innovation are two pillars that come together when universities are at stake. The expansion of the frontiers of human knowledge, in all areas and disciplines, is an irrefutable commitment of higher education institutions. Together with public and private entities, they are also committed to promoting knowledge transfer to society and the economy, in the form of new ideas, new products and new processes. Universities are supposed to transform ideas into value for society.To achieve these goals, higher education institutions have to assure their human resources are highly qualified, that they have an adequate atmosphere, that research is of high quality, and finally that adequate interactions take place. At UMinho we have a clear strategy to be an open and permanent space for knowledge production and furtherance of nationally and internationally relevant innovation across different social and economic sectors.For many years, UMinho has adopted the principles of open access and open science. We aim at carrying out our scientific activity and the dissemination of the corresponding results transparently and collaboratively; this implies that researchers, citizens, policymakers, state agencies, companies, and third sector organizations work in close cooperation facing research and innovation processes. We believe this is the shorter way to trigger smart and sustainable growth and qualified job creation.At UMinho, we encourage the coupling between research and education.Our goal is to expand research opportunities and to give our students occasions to experience vibrant research environments, ensuring that learning goes beyond the “common” routines.Joining research and learning processes provides both undergraduate and postgraduate students with opportunities to own their learning process. We believe that research experience has a role to play in improving students’ motivation for learning, in the pursuit of their interests.Doing better science occurs when we make it both more sensitive to the needs of society and also more efficient in what concerns the allocated resources. It is also a question of accountability. This is fundamental for reinforcing society awareness about our contributions to human and social development.Following the 2018 publication, we present here the 2019 edition of Research and Innovation, a series that draws on the outcomes of the activity of the UMinho research and innovation ecosystem. This comprehensive volume gives particular emphasis to the Research Units outcomes, namely in terms of funding, research projects, papers, and the most important achievements; the activity of the Interface Unitsand Collaborative Laboratories in which UMinho participates is also reported, through their activities and institutional projects, making evident their importance for the continuous growth of our Institution,our region, and our country.Rui Vieira de CastroRecto
O antigo Paço dos arcebispos de Braga
Get PDFO antigo Paço dos arcebispos de Braga ocupa um inequívoco lugar de destaque na paisagem urbana bracarense, cuja complexa história se entrecruza com a da construção do próprio palácio, constituído por um complexo de edifícios que se foram anexando uns aos outros, entre os séculos XIV e XVIII. Situado nas proximidades da Sé Catedral, o Paço arcebispal desenvolve-se por uma vasta área do centro histórico de Braga, sendo reconhecido como um dos edifícios patrimoniais mais emblemáticos da cidade, que tira também partido das características que foram conferidas aos seus espaços envolventes no contexto da intervenção de restauro ocorrida entre 1930 e 1950.Como exemplar complexo de arquitetura civil, o Paço arcebispal conta-nos uma história longa e dinâmica, associada aos protagonistas que ajudaram a dar forma aos edifícios que formalizam o palácio, um indiscutível testemunho do poder e importância que os arcebispos tiveram na história de Braga. O Paço dá também conta da evolução e do pulsar da cidade ao longo de séculos, pois nele encontramos expressões das diferentes tendências artísticas e culturais que se fizeram sentir, um pouco por toda a Europa, entre os finais da Idade Média e os finais do Antigo Regime. Assim, os seus sucessivos acrescentos e fases construtivas representam exemplos paradigmáticos da racionalidade urbanística e das linguagens arquitetónicas características do longo período de progressiva construção dos “paços” que compõem o Paço arcebispal bracarense. A história da sua evolução representa também um excelente testemunho das mudanças ocorridas nas cidades com vocação senhorial, permitindo-nos entender como foram mudando as estratégias de propaganda e de afirmação pública do poder no espaço urbano medieval, renascentista e barroco

No full textEste meu livro, sucintamente intitulado “A crise do liberalismo”, ocupa o lugar cimeiro da minha biografia intelectual. Trata-se de uma obra que foi aprofundadamente estudada e, direi mesmo, intensamente sofrida. Sofrida, bem entendido, no sentido fecundante de ter sido uma obra que a mim próprio obrigou a persistentes investigações e a longas reflexões que me conduziram à revisão de muitas perspectivas relativas à sociedade contemporânea portuguesa, isto é, à sociedade transformada pelas leis do sistema capitalista e dominada pela classe burguesa.

A Crise do Liberalismo e as primeiras manifestações das ideias socialistas em Portugal (1820-1852) (1ª ed., 1969) é uma obra marcante da historiografia portuguesa dos anos 60, nos termos da sua produção e também, mais ainda, nos termos da sua leitura, no imediato à sua publicação (1ª edição, Seara Nova, 1969), a que se seguiu em 1974 a 2ª edição e em 1978 a 3ª edição. A sua nova edição em tempos de comemorações do Bicentenário da Revolução de 1820 e da evocação dos 100 anos do nascimento de Victor de Sá, é uma oportunidade para sublinhar os horizontes históricos e historiográficos deste trabalho.

Sobre as causas do atraso científico em Portugal - Uma digressão histórica
No full textO atraso científico que se verificou em Portugal desde o século XVII é um facto quase unanimemente reconhecido. Para o explicar, muitos pensadores e analistas, nacionais e estrangeiros, sugeriram as mais variadas causas reais ou imaginárias. Algumas estão ligadas a atributos pessoais, de caráter endógeno ou exógeno; outras a condicionalismos geopolíticos ou a fatores económico-financeiros. Duvidou-se da capacidade intelectual e do engenho dos portugueses; depreciou-se a sua aptidão para o trabalho, perseverança e reflexão; inventaram-se desconformidades entre atividades dependentes da emoção e da razão. Houve quem opinasse, sabiamente, que o atraso se devia ao desinteresse votado à ciência pelos portugueses e seus governantes, o que justificava a iliteracia científica generalizada, a pouca importância atribuída ao saber e o pouco investimento nacional na investigação científica. Da leitura deste livro, que aborda detalhadamente todos estes temas, facilmente se conclui que o atraso científico em Portugal não se deveu a causas inevitáveis ou a um singular e fatal destino, mas apenas a circunstâncias desfavoráveis que poderiam ter sido alteradas pela vontade dos portugueses. Se o progresso económico-social é um objetivo nacional, é indispensável que se reconheça a importância fundamental da ciência e se atribua à investigação científica o justo lugar que deve ocupar entre as infraestruturas nacionais mais reconhecidas e valorizadas

These include the criteria for indexing journals, the metrics systems for assessing impact, the criteria and hierarchies in the circulation of the knowledge produced, the importance of open access and the dissemination of knowledge in different languages — Portuguese, Spanish and English — in the Ibero-American space. Debates, for more than six years, provided by the Fórum de Publicações e Difusão de Conhecimento Científico (Forum on Publication and Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge) of the Confederação Ibero-Americana das Associações Científicas e Acadêmicas de Comunicação (Confibercom; Ibero-American Confederation of Scientific and Academic Communication Associations).
Under the title Revistas Científicas de Comunicação Ibero-Americanas na Política de Divulgação do Conhecimento: Tendências, Limitações e os Desafios de Novas Estratégias (Ibero-American Journals of Communication Within the Policy of Knowledge Dissemination: Trends, Constraints and the Challenges of New Strategies), the work assembles the contribution of Portuguese, Spanish and Latin American authors, who, other than analysing crucial aspects of the international operating mechanisms for scientific dissemination, suggest new approaches to break down barriers and promote greater democratisation of Ibero-American scientific knowledge on Communication among their own countries and in the world. In this book, the 14 contributing authors seek to echo, in society as a whole, the many voices from Latin America and other Portuguese-, Galician-, Catalan- and Spanish-speaking countries that have much to say to the world through research in Communication.Esta edição resulta dos debates, troca de ideias e investigações sobre as condições e políticas de difusão da produção científica em Comunicação e dos temas que lhes estão associados, tais como, os critérios para indexação de revistas, os sistemas de métricas de avaliação de impacto, os critérios e as hierarquias na circulação do conhecimento produzido, a importância do acesso aberto e a divulgação do conhecimento nos diferentes idiomas – Português, Espanhol e Inglês –, no espaço ibero-americano. O objetivo é reunir, num único volume, um conjunto significativo de reflexões científicas sobre conceitos centrais da investigação contemporânea na área, em português e em inglês, para desta forma possibilitar uma maior partilha e divulgação do conhecimento que se vai construindo a nível mundial.
This book intends to fill a gap that remains open in the scientific area of Sociology of Childhood.
