Mentoring Incarcerated Youth: A Community-Based Learning Experience

    No full text
Recognizing the importance of university and community partnerships to address social issues, a mentoring program was implemented on a juvenile justice campus (JJC). A collaborative effort between a regional Hispanic-serving university, the county probation department, and a non-profit agency resulted in the development and implementation of a mentoring program with incarcerated youth. Students assisted in the development and implementation of the mentoring program, which incorporated life skills development, violence prevention, financial planning, parenting groups, needs assessments, and meditation. Student perceptions of their experience were explored using qualitative research methods. Educational benefits, the importance of collaboration, and the relationship between self-efficacy and placement satisfaction are discussed

Social Action, Service Learning, and Youth Development

    No full text
University service-learning students worked with middle school youth in a social change project addressing positive youth development and civic engagement. Based on their knowledge of positive youth development theory and British Social Action, they facilitated a weekly group in which the youth identified combatting oppression by teachers (adultism) for their project. They discussed the problem, designed surveys, analyzed the data, and presented their findings. The youth demonstrated individual competencies and connected with adults while they learned to work collectively in a community change project

This paper presents the results of a survey that assessed the long-term impact of varying degrees of service on alumni employment and attitudes toward careers. Impact of Service-Learning Courses with a Social Justice Curriculum on the Development of Social Responsibility among College Students

    No full text
In this study, six service-learning courses were studied to examine if a curriculum’s social justice emphasis has a significant impact on college students’ development of different types of social responsibility. The results suggest that service-learning courses with a social justice emphasis had a positive impact on the development of participatory and justice-oriented social responsibility, while service-learning courses without such an emphasis did not have an impact on the development of social responsibility

Leadership Skill Development in a First-Year Honors Service-Learning Seminar

    No full text
The authors examine undergraduate students’ self-assessed leadership skill development before and after participation in a first-year honors service-learning seminar. A one-group, pre-test/post-test study was conducted with 651 first-year students enrolled in a first-year honors semi-nar course with a service-learning component. Participants completed the Roets Rating Scale for Leadership (RRSL). A paired-samples t-test analysis of RRSL indicates a significant de-crease in participants’ leadership skills. Results, along with implications for program design and future research are discussed

Do “Days of Service” Meet Institutional Service-Learning Goals? A Case Study in Assessment of the MLK Day of Service

    No full text
This study pilots a survey tool for assessing participant experiences in the MLK Day of Service at a public university. Student, faculty, staff, community volunteer, and community partner par-ticipants (N=344) reflected upon service, learning, and university-community connections as part of a multi-method evaluation process. Quantitative analysis of unidimensional and summed variables found significant variation by instructional site and participant affiliation. Such measures and instruments may clarify the role of Days of Service in advancing institutional ser-vice-learning goals

Sharing a Vision with an International Partner through Photographs

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to establish a shared vision between the academic program and the international service-learning partner. Through the use of photovoice (Collier & Collier, 1986), we conducted a needs assessment to determine the partner’s priorities. Analysis of inter-view transcripts and photos yielded themes representing the partner’s needs and were the basis of the shared vision, adding clarity to the purpose of the experience

Promoting Healthy Aging through an Intergenerational Service-Learning Course

    No full text
This case study examines combining service-learning (SL) with an intergenerational exercise program using undergraduate kinesiology students. The purpose was to explore how SL increases confidence, social responsibility, and leadership growth while addressing community needs. Students led biweekly exercise sessions for older adults over six weeks. Reflections demonstrated mutual benefits, including improved activity levels, reduced social isolation, and strengthened community connections

GNOME Logic: Evidence-Based Strategies for High-Impact Medical Education Pathways

    No full text
Socioeconomic inequities divert underrepresented talent from the physician pipeline. Integrating Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), leaky-pipeline diagnostics, and 14 years of mixed-methods research on Florida International University’s pathway program, we present a logic model aligning Goals, Needs, Objectives, Methods, and Evaluation (GNOME). GNOME links diagnosed barriers to SCCT-aligned supports and pre-specified metrics, yielding gains in self-efficacy, application intent, and matriculation. The model offers a practical, cost-effective roadmap for institutions seeking a more equitable medical workforce
