No full textDSIE - Doctoral Symposium in Informatics Engineering, now in its 13th Edition, is an opportunity for the PhD students of the FEUP Doctoral Program in Informatics Engineering (ProDEI) together with MAPi to show up and prove they are ready for starting their respective theses work. DSIE meetings have been held since the scholar year 2005/06 and the main goal has always been to provide a forum for discussion on, and demonstration of, the practical application of a variety of scientific and technological research issues, particularly in the context of information technology, computer science and computer engineering. DSIE symposium comes out as a natural conclusion of mandatory ProDEI course called “Methodologies for Scientific Research” (MSR), this year also available to MAPi students, leading to a formal assessment of the PhD students first year’s learned competencies on those methodologies

No full textThe Portuguese Society of Occupational Safety and Hygiene (SPOSHO) organises on 26h and 27th March 2018, the 14th edition of the International Symposium on Occupational Safety and Hygiene - SHO 2018. Similarly to the past twelve years, the event is being held in the main Auditorium of the School of Engineering at University of Minho in Guimarães.
The 2018 edition covers the issues of Ergonomics and Physical Environment, Chemical and Biological Risk, Fire Safety and Prevention Management, which occur in plenary sessions, as well as in parallel sessions of submitted works in 26 subjects covered by the event and several sessions of posters.A Sociedade Portuguesa de Segurança e Higiene Ocupacionais realiza, em 26 e 27 de Março de 2018, a 14ª edição do Colóquio Internacional de Segurança e Higiene Ocupacionais - SHO 2018. Tal como nos doze últimos anos, o evento tem lugar no Auditório Nobre da Escola de Engenharia da Universidade do Minho, em Guimarães.

Proceedings of CITTA 10th Annual Conference on Planning Research: Planning for Climate Change: Political Climate and Policy Changes
No full textI’m particularly pleased and honoured to write these introductory lines to this book of proceedings.
Firstly, because it is a wonderful way to celebrate the 10th annual conference organized by our research centre – CITTA. Ten years ago, when we started this journey and organized the first CITTA Conference, I still remember to make the point in the closing speech that more difficult than organizing a first international conference would be to keep its regular organization over the years with the same enthusiasm, rigour and quality standards of the first one. Clearly, this challenge has been successfullymet thanks to the collaboration, talent and dedication of all the senior and junior researchers that, over the years, have been contributing to the development and consolidation of our research centre.
Secondly, because the theme of the conference - Planning for Climate Change – has long been central to several research projects carried out at CITTA. The subtitle – Political climate for policy changes – is an obvious reference to the recent fallacies and denials brought about by the Trump administration to the wider political debate. This new rhetoric is dangerously weakening international long term initiatives that could, ifnot reverse current trends at least slow down and contain the widespread climatic changes that are occurring on the earth’s surface, hitting in particular the poorer and more vulnerable sectors of our societies, specially in the so-called global South.
Thirdly, because for the first time, the organization of the conference was based on an internal call open to all the staff of the research centre, which resulted in the selection of the proposal prepared by Ruben Fernandes and Luísa Batista. To these two CITTA researchers I shall address my deepest thanks and congratulations for the overall success of the conference, which accounted with an excellent choice of keynote speakers, including the Portuguese Ministry for the Environment João Pedro Matos Fernandes, Prof. Filipe Duarte Santos (U Lisbon) and Dr. Vanesa Castan Broto(UC London) and with a most effective and professional organization of the event. In addition, the conference ended with an original round table gathering representatives from five Portuguese Local Authorities – Amarante, Guimarães, Ílhavo, Porto and Viana do Castelo – that, in a vividly and documented way, presented their rich and diversified experiences of implementing adaptation and mitigation strategies at local level totackle the challenge of climate change.
In the following pages, the reader is going to find a selection of twelve full papers which can be considered a fair sample of the forty oral presentations at the conference which were initially organised into four thematic tracks, as follows: Climate Change and Territorial Efficiency; Climate Change and Multilevel governance; Climate Change and Transportation Planning; and, finally, Climate Change and Urban Infrastructure.
In comparison to some previous books of proceedings of the CITTA’s annual conferences this one is surely much less bulky but, from a research point of view, its contents are no less relevant and the average overall quality still kept at a very high level as the presence of some prominent authors clearly denotes. Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Mechanics and Materials in Design (M2D2017)
No full textM2D2017 is the seventh international gathering of a prestigious series of conferences coordinated by the International Scientific Committee of Mechanics and Materials in Design.
This series of conferences is wholy devoted to advances in mechanics, materials, structural integrity and design. M2D2017 is sponsored by the University of Porto, the University of Toronto and the University of Algarve. The conference attracted over 230 participants with 360 accepted submissions from 40 countries out of 416 submissions. These papers werepresented in June 11-15, 2017 in the magnificent city of Albufeira/Algarve, Portugal.
The conference themes which address novel and advanced topics in Mechanics and Materials in Design focused on computational mechanics, experimental mechanics, fatigue and fracture mechanics, composite and advanced materials, nanotechnologies and nanomaterials, tribologyand surface engineering, mechanical design and prototyping, biomechanical applications, civil engineering applications, impact ant crashworthiness, energy and thermo-fluid systems, and industrial engineering and management.
The conference also included an Open Forum on The Challenges Facing Engineering Education, where an expert panel with over 100 years of collective and active researchers and educators addressed the roles of professors that they meet, the obligations of their stakeholders and current challenges facing engineering education.We believe that the meeting offered our delegates a forum for the dissemination of their recent work in mechanics and materials and their applications in engineering design, fostered research that integrates mechanics and materials in the design process, and promotedexchange of ideas and international co-operation among scientists and engineers in this important field of engineering.
We are particularly indebted to the authors and special guests for their presentations. Each of the more than 360 contributions offered opportunities for thorough discussions with the authors. Particularly, we acknowledge the excellent contributions of the participants, theirinnovative ideas and research directions, the novel modeling and simulation techniques, and the invaluable critical discussions. We are also indebted to the outstanding keynote speakers who highlighted the conference themes with their contributions. We also take this opportunityto thank the members of the International Scientific Committee, the members of the Advisory Committee and the reviewers for their time, effort and helpful suggestions.
We offer our sincere gratitude to the symposia organisers for their efforts and valuable contributions to the success of the event, and the local organising committee for attending to the conference demands and delegates needs. Given the rapidity with which science is advancing in all areas of mechanics and materials, the next conference in this series (Integrity, Reliability and Failure - IRF2018) will take place in Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, in July 2018. Undoubtedly, we expect IRF2018 to be as stimulating and interesting as M2D2017, as evidenced by the excellent contributions offered in this current event. Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Integrity-Reliability-Failure (IRF2016)
No full textIRF2016 is the fifth international gathering of a prestigious series of Integrity-Reliability-Failure conferences coordinated by the International Scientific Committee of Mechanics and Materials in Design. This series of conferences are wholy devoted to advances in mechanics, materials, structural integrity and design. IRF2016 is jointly sponsored by the University of Porto and the University of Toronto, and it took place in the facilities of FEUP-Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, in the beautiful city of Porto/Portugal, from 24 to 28 July 2016.
The conference attracted over 200 participants with 220 accepted submissions involving 510 authors from 38 different countries around the world. The conference themes which address novel and advanced topics on Integrity, Reliability and Failure focused on Computational Mechanics, Experimental Mechanics, Fracture and Fatigue, Composite and Advanced Materials, Tribology and Surface Engineering, Mechanical Design andPrototyping, Biomechanical Applications, Civil Engineering Applications, Energy and Thermo-Fluid Systems, and Industrial Engineering and Management, among other topics.
We believe that the meeting offered our delegates a forum for the discussion and dissemination of their recent work in assessing the integrity, reliability and failure of engineering structures, components and systems, fostered research that integrates mechanics and materials in the design process, and promoted exchange of ideas and international cooperation among scientists and engineers in this important field of engineering.
