Encontro Nacional do Betão Estrutural 2024 (BE2024): Livro de Atas
No full textO Encontro Nacional Betão Estrutural 2024 – BE2024, organizado conjuntamente pelo Grupo Português de Betão Estrutural (GPBE) e pela Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP), constituiu uma oportunidade de atualização técnica no domínio do Betão Estrutural. Num momento em que Portugal regista grande vitalidade no domínio das Obras Públicas, o BE2024 possibilitou a apresentação e divulgação de casos de estudo envolvendo grandes empreendimentos, a par do aprofundamento dos mais recentes conhecimentos ligados à conceção e projeto de estruturas, aos novos materiais e à reabilitação. De relevância para o público alvo do BE2024 são igualmente os desafios com que se debate o setor da Construção, num contexto em que se destacam a mudança impulsionada pela transformação digital e o imperativo da sustentabilidade ambiental, associados a temas incontornáveis como a pré-fabricação, a construção modular e a tecnologia BIM.
O BE2024 foi delineado para dar resposta a uma dupla necessidade: permitir a troca de experiências e divulgar os novos conhecimentos no âmbito do Betão Estrutural. Foi desta forma que se identificaram os temas a abordar, ligados aos Materiais e Produtos, à Sustentabilidade, à Análise e Projeto de Estruturas, à Reabilitação e às Realizações. Foi dedicada uma importância especial às temáticas da Pré-fabricação e da Construção Modular, bem como às grandes obras em curso em Portugal, com relevo para as ligadas à ampliação das redes dos metros do Porto e de Lisboa.
O programa do BE2024 incluiu três palestras convidadas: o engenheiro George Jones, convener do TG6.7 da fib, apresentou o recente Bulletin 101 - Precast Concrete in Tall Buildings; o professor Eugen Brühwiler, apresentou uma palestra centrada nas aplicações do UHPFRC (Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete); na manhã do último dia do BE2024 decorreu uma conferência plenária dedicada à apresentação do projeto da Ponte Ferreirinha, a cargo dos engenheiros Miguel Sacristán e Filipe Vasques.
O programa do BE2024 incluiu ainda um conjunto de Sessões Temáticas, implementadas em formato exclusivamente oral, e uma Exposição Técnica, que decorreu em paralelo. Finalmente, o BE2024 incluiu mais uma edição do Prémio Jovens Mestres, destinada a divulgar e premiar as melhores dissertações de mestrado dedicadas à temática do Betão Estrutural.
As presentes Atas reúnem as versões digitais (formato PDF) dos artigos submetidos ao BE2024 pelos respetivos autores, bem como as cinco comunicações selecionadas para apresentação oral dos concorrentes ao Prémio Jovens Mestres.
A Comissão Organizadora e a Comissão Científica do BE2024 agradecem a todos os conferencistas e autores o cuidado despendido na preparação de todas as comunicações submetidas, assim como a todos os revisores, cujo trabalho diligente muito concorreu para garantir a qualidade dos artigos publicados. Finalmente, agradece-se a ajuda financeira concedida pelos patrocinadores que, reconhecendo a importância do BE2024, se disponibilizaram para apoiar mais uma edição deste evento que bienalmente se repete desde 1986
Exploring information behaviour: An introduction
No full textEste livro é uma introdução à investigação sobre o comportamento informacional humano. Não é um livro sobre a rica diversidade de tal comportamento como é relatado em milhares de artigos de investigação, teses de doutoramento e relatórios para agências de financiamento. Esse trabalho já foi feito por Donald Case no seu livro Looking for information. É, em vez disso, um relato muito pessoal, baseado em larga medida na minha própria investigação e nos meus próprios quadros teóricos. Outro texto introdutório, com um âmbito bastante mais lato do que este, é Introduction to information behaviour, de Nigel Ford.
Inevitavelmente, faz-se referência à extensa literatura, uma vez que o resultado da investigação sobre o comportamento humano oferece uma maior compreensão da riqueza desse comportamento e da complexa interação de fatores que têm impacto sobre o indivíduo que procura informação. No entanto, sempre que possível, tento fornecer links para fontes disponíveis em acesso aberto, acreditando que é muito mais provável que o leitor clique num link para encontrar um documento relacionado do que tentar descobrir a fonte para um documento citado.
O livro é destinado a quem se inicia na investigação, talvez preparando uma dissertação de mestrado, ou começando a pensar na investigação para doutoramento. Espero que, quando o leitor chegar ao final do livro, eu lhe tenha transmitido três coisas: em primeiro lugar, o que se entende por comportamento informacional; em segundo lugar, quais as teorias e modelos que orientam a nossa abordagem à investigação; e, finalmente, uma sólida compreensão dos vários métodos de investigação empregues na investigação em comportamento informacional, e como os utilizar.
O livro pode também ter alguma relevância para ajudar os gestores de informação a compreenderem as circunstâncias complexas subjacentes às necessidades de informação e ao comportamento informacional dos seus clientes.
Espero fornecer uma introdução de agradável leitura a este tema, e que me falem da vossa experiência de ler e usar o livro, para que eu possa melhorá-lo em qualquer edição subsequente.

O Setor da Construção Ibérico e o Investimento em Infraestruturas no Contexto Europeu
No full textAté agora, neste século, o sector da construção na Península Ibérica (como são cada vez mais chamados Espanha e Portugal como um todo) tem estado sujeito a fortes tensões. Como se sabe, após os primeiros anos de grande (em certo sentido, poder-se-ia dizer excessivo) crescimento, o sector sofreu as consequências de uma queda profunda do investimento na construção.
Em que sentido se pode dizer que o crescimento de um determinado sector, ou da economia como um todo, é “excessivo”? Isso pode acontecer? A resposta é que sim, de facto, o crescimento pode ser considerado excessivo quando, cumulativamente ao longo de um conjunto de anos, excede a capacidade do sector em questão ou da economia como um todo. O resultado assume geralmente a forma de um desequilíbrio económico, refletido numa escalada dos custos de produção, dos preços dos ativos e na deterioração do equilíbrio externo.
Algo semelhante foi o que aconteceu com a crise financeira ocorrida no final de 2008. Esta crise, abrangente e com consequências que continuam a afetar fortemente a estabilidade política e social de muitos países, teve um impacto especial em Portugal e Espanha. Contudo, não nos devemos enganar: embora a crise financeira tenha sido o que marcou o início dos graves problemas económicos que se sucederam a partir de então, os desequilíbrios básicos foram gerados nos anos anteriores a 2008, sem que as políticas económicas levadas a cabo nesses mesmos anos contribuíram para neutralizá-los. Em vez disso, seguiu-se um padrão bastante comum: as crises económicas são frequentemente geradas por erros de política económica cometidos durante as fases ascendentes dos ciclos económicos. Sem que isso signifique, no caso em apreço, fugir às responsabilidades do próprio sector.
O sector da construção, tanto no subsector da construção como no subsector da engenharia civil, foi um dos protagonistas dos anos de forte crescimento, respondendo a uma grande procura de investimento, privado e público, gerada por sua vez devido a um ambiente de baixo interesse taxas, sem precedentes até então no caso das economias espanhola e portuguesa.
A partir de 2008, a queda do investimento na construção foi dramática, agravada, mais recentemente, por novos episódios de crise a partir de 2020, devido à pandemia e à guerra na Ucrânia. Possivelmente, esta queda no investimento, por sua vez, foi excessiva e poderá esperar-se uma normalização nos próximos anos. No entanto, será difícil conseguir uma participação do valor acrescentado gerado pelo sector da construção no Produto Interno Bruto próxima da dos primeiros anos deste século.
No entanto, o sector da construção continua a ser um sector chave nas economias ibéricas, por diversas razões. Em primeiro lugar, é um sector de mão-de-obra intensiva, em países com uma taxa de desemprego ainda elevada, especialmente no caso de Espanha. Em segundo lugar, existe ainda um défice infraestrutural significativo em algumas regiões (e devemos necessariamente destacar aqui a ligação ferroviária entre Madrid e Lisboa), bem como no sector da habitação. E, por último, é um setor em que as empresas ibéricas têm demonstrado uma certa vantagem comparativa, colocando-se em alguns casos em posições de destaque entre as empresas de construção a nível mundial. Este último ponto é especialmente importante, pois é o que tem permitido às empresas de construção compensar a queda do investimento em construção em Espanha e Portugal com um grande aumento da sua atividade internacional
Proceedings of CITTA 14th Annual Conference on Planning Research: Safe, Equitable and Just Communities
No full textCommunity, equity, fairness, and social justice have traditionally been key principles in spatial and transport planning. However, the ongoing planetary transformations – such as those driven by climate change, global urbanization, sociodemographic, cultural and political change, technological transition and the restructuring of finance, labour, and welfare – introduce complex and, in some ways, unprecedented challenges. These transformations not only call into question how we define and apply those principles but also test the ability of spatial and transport planning and policy to enact impactful change.
In this context, CITTA chose Safe, Equitable, and Just Communities as the theme for its 14th Annual Conference on Planning Research, held on June 17, 2022. This decision highlights the significance of continuously reflecting on our research concepts, strategies, and methodologies, as well as their ability to describe and explain real-world processes accurately. It also acknowledges the critical connections between knowledge production and collective action, underscoring the importance of normative discussions around values and aspirations.
The Conference benefited from the inspiring contributions of Jennifer Robinson on Settings of community engagement: What role for planning in social justice?, and of Pierluigi Coppola on Planning the future of urban mobility: Green smart and fair solutions, and brought together 53 papers, organised around four main topics, each expressing how the theme of the Conference intersects the current CITTA’s research: Planning for social and environmental justice; Equitable and just urban policies; Accessible and inclusive transport systems and mobility services; and Safe and efficient transport systems.
This Book of Proceedings includes six papers, which in a way represent and record the diversity of perspectives and debates that shaped the Conference. The papers show a wide range of research topics, spanning from autonomous vehicles to public transport, from socio-spatial segregation to citizen engagement, and from active ageing to sports facilities planning. They highlight the variety of geographical contexts and scales of intervention, as well as the global mobility of concepts and policies. Their diversity extends to the research approaches as well, ranging from more conceptual debates to more applied research.
This Book of Proceedings is thus a (small) contribution to the more general challenge facing the renewal of planning research, from the perspective of building Safe, Equitable, and Just Communities which lies precisely in the ability to work and learn globally from the diversity – but also from the interconnection – of spatial and social contexts
HEAT TRANSFER: NUMERICAL MODELLING WITH EES APPLICATIONS
No full textMost heat transfer problems are complex, in the sense that in most cases there are no analytical (exact) solutions to obtain temperature fields or heat transfer rates/coefficients. Thermal energy systems, and in general energy systems, involve heat transfer processes and, therefore, also require approximate solutions.
The approximate solution to non-linear systems of algebraic equations or differential equations is typically obtained with numerical methods, which became increasingly popular with the advent of affordable and fast computing. Second generation computer programs, such as Engineering Equation Solver (EES), do not even require conventional computer programming to solve mathematical problems, being based on the use of internal algorithms.
The simulation of heat transfer processes and thermal energy systems widely benefits from such tools, allowing fast approximate solutions, and also the study of alternative processes/systems through the use of parametric analyses. This book is dedicated to the numerical simulation of thermal energy systems, with the use of the EES software tool.
However, prior to the use of software tools, problem analysis is fundamental, in order to decide which type of model and degree of accuracy is acceptable. In this book, several heat transfer and thermal system problems are presented, coming from the energy engineering practice. After problem analysis and discussion, a numerical model is applied and solutions are obtained with the use of EES. Computed results are discussed, always trying to assess the effect of model assumptions on the results, and obtain conclusions which might be useful for the design of those systems.
The book starts by revisiting some well-known numerical methods to solve equations that appear on most practical cases (chapter 1). Global and distributed models are distinguished. In the case of distributed models, the finite volumes approach is favoured. A brief presentation of the EES software follows (chapter 2); however, this book does not replace the software manual, and it is advisable that the reader has some prior experience of EES. Chapters 3 and 4 present several examples of thermal system modelling, with chapter 3 dedicated to global modelling and chapter 4 to distributed modelling

No full textEste manual tem como objetivo compilar informações essenciais para o estudo de soluções de tratamento de água e de águas residuais. Ao longo dos diversos capítulos, são introduzidos os conceitos base dos processos que compõem os sistemas de tratamento, assim como noções essenciais para desenvolvimento do respetivo projeto. Os temas apresentados são complementados por considerações técnicas e por diversos exemplos devidamente ilustrados e referentes a casos reais.
O manual expõe de forma clara, mas não exaustiva, processos comuns de tratamento de água (nomeadamente filtração e desinfeção) no capítulo 1, com o respetivo enquadramento legal e com as bases para dimensionamento. O capítulo 2 é mais extenso e dedicado ao tratamento de águas residuais com referência a diversos aspetos fundamentais, como as considerações de base para um projeto, o seu desenvolvimento, os processos de tratamento, a gestão dos subprodutos (controlo e minimização de odores, e gestão de lamas), o perfil hidráulico e os sistemas naturais de tratamento

It was organized jointly by the University of Porto and the CIB working groups W099 and W123. This initiative of CIB occurs generally every two years. There were 81 registered participants and 57 accepted papers with authors from 21 countries. The topic was devoted to the emergent changes in Construction motivated by the digital transformations of processes, of tools and of methods. International Symposium on Occupational Safety and Hygiene: Proceedings Book of the SHO2023
No full textAfter the constraints imposed by the SARS-COV-2 virus pandemic, the Portuguese Society for Occupational Safety and Hygiene (SPOSHO) decided to organise the 19th edition of the International Symposium on Occupational Safety and Hygiene – SHO 2023, still in a hybrid format. While exploring these changes, the overall structure of the event remains intact.
The SHO 2023 edition will cover the traditional themes of Safety, Prevention Management, Chemical and Biological Hazards, Ergonomics, and the Occupational Environment. Additionally, it will address emerging areas associated with the 4th Industrial Revolution, Collaborative Robotics, IoT, and the new challenges they bring, in plenary and thematic sessions.Depois dos constrangimentos impostos pela pandemia do vírus SARS-COV-2, a Sociedade Portuguesa de Segurança e Higiene Ocupacionais (SPOSHO) decidiu organizar a 19ª edição do Simpósio Internacional de Segurança e Higiene Ocupacionais - SHO 2023 ainda num formato híbrido. Ao mesmo tempo que se explora estas mudanças, a estrutura geral do evento mantém-se intacta.
A edição de 2023 do SHO abrangerá os temas tradicionais de Segurança, Gestão da Prevenção, Riscos Químicos e Biológicos, Ergonomia e Ambiente de Trabalho. Proceedings of the 20th International Conference on Experimental Mechanics (ICEM20): Experimental Mechanics in Engineering and Biomechanics
No full textICEM20 is the twentieth international gathering of a prestigious series of the Experimental Mechanics conferences coordinated by EuraSEM-European Society of Experimental Mechanics. This series of conferences are wholly devoted to advances in Experimental Mechanics applied to engineering and biomechanics. ICEM20 takes place in the beautiful cityof Porto/Portugal, from 2 to 7 July 2023, being jointly sponsored by FEUP-Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, APAET-Portuguese Society of Experimental Mechanics, and LNEC-National Laboratory of Civil Engineering. The conference attracted over 380 contributions, with 345 accepted submissions involving 1025 authors from 42 differentcountries all around the world.
The conference themes, which address novel and advanced topics in Experimental Mechanics, focusing Experiments and Applications in Engineering Mechanics, Materials and Biomechanics, including Testing and Diagnostics, Theoretical and Numerical Models, Composite and Advanced Materials, Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics, Nanotechnologies andNanomaterials, Tribology and Surface Engineering, Mechanical Design and Prototyping, Biomechanical Applications, Civil and Structural Engineering, Energy and Thermo-Fluid Systems, and Industrial Engineering, among other topics.
The conference also included an Open Forum on topic “Is Higher Education a Consumer Product?”, where an expert panel with many years of collective and active researchers and educators addressed the current state of higher education in engineering. We believe that the meeting offered our delegates an excellent opportunity for the discussion and dissemination of their recent work on experimental mechanics techniques applied to engineering structures, components and systems, fostered research that integrates experimentation in mechanics, materials and biomechanics, and promoted exchange of ideas and international co-operation among academics, scientists and engineers in this important field of engineering.
We are indebted to the authors and special guests for their contributions. Each of the 345 approved papers offers an opportunity for thorough discussions with the authors and the scientific community. Particularly, we acknowledge the excellent contributions of the participants, their innovative ideas and research directions, their novel experimental, modeling and simulation techniques, and their invaluable critical comments. We are also indebted to the outstanding keynote speakers who highlighted the conference themes with their contributions and covered the main topics of the conference.
