The multimedia "projection" of the tangible and intangible historical and cultural heritage of Messina Auteur social housing between historical-architectural conservation and performance redevelopment / La “proiezione” multimediale del patrimonio storico-culturale tangibile e intangibile di Messina L’edilizia sociale d’autore tra conservazione storico-architettonica e riqualificazione prestazionale
Auteur social housing constitutes one of the highest expressions of post-World War II building quality in the city of Messina, playing a significant role in the local historical and cultural heritage.
These buildings, more than sixty years later, are in need of redevelopment to preserve their original design identity, despite the lack of regulatory protection for most of them. This research aims to define a method for energy efficiency that preserves the formal and technical-constructive qualities of these buildings, integrating the use of digital tools and respecting the specificities of each architectural context.
The methodology adopted involved four main phases: evaluation of the field of investigation, regulatory analysis, selection of digital tools and identification of a representative sample. Through the use of BIM modelling software, digital twins of buildings were created to conduct energy analyses and propose targeted interventions.
The research focuses on the analysis of post-World War II construction in Italy and Spain, with particular attention to construction and performance characteristics. Through a chronological reconstruction, the performance deficiencies typical of social housing of the period are examined, with emphasis on formal qualities, construction techniques and settlement peculiarities.
The comparative approach allows us to identify similarities and differences between the two realities, analysing the role of public policies, technological innovations and the challenges of building heritage conservation. The selection of a representative sample from outside the Messina context allows the methodology to be adapted also to geographically and culturally different realities, maintaining the focus on modern residential construction and the definition of redevelopment and valorisation strategies. In Messina, the study traces the evolution of economic and social housing, from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1908 to the post-war building renaissance, with a mapping of the social neighbourhoods along the Fiumare. In parallel, modern housing in Granada is analysed, highlighting how the Spanish socio-economic context of the twentieth century influenced the development of both private and subsidised housing complexes.
Selecting two case studies for Messina (Mario Ridolfi's INCIS Houses in the city centre and Filippo Rovigo's workers' housing) and two for Granada (Fernando Higueras Díaz's Paseo del Altillo building in the coastal town of Almuñecar and José María García de Paredes's Pavaneras Street building in the city centre), performance analyses are conducted on the current thermal state and efficiency improvements are proposed in line with the original project idea, with the help of an Italian software with BIM technology, TerMus by ACCA, and a Spanish one that follows the simplified analysis method, CE3X, developed by the company Efinovatic, comparing for each building the data obtained according to the Italian energy classification with the calificación energética set according to the Spanish regulations
The ruminative cycle in smokers: on the relationship between cigarette smoking behaviour, rumination, difficulties in thought suppression, and emotion regulation
To date, no study has investigated the relationship between smoking behavior, rumination, difficulties in emotion regulation and thought suppression. We aimed to investigate the relationship between cigarette consumption and regulatory strategies (e.g. rumination, thought suppression). Seventy-nine participants (39 females) ranging in age from 18 to 45 years (Mage = 24.05, SDage = 4.57), of whom 39 were non-smokers and 40 were regular smokers, were administered a multi-method psychological assessment, including questionnaires, behavioral tasks, and a modified version of the White Bear Paradigm. The results showed that smokers tended to spend more time than non-smokers thinking about certain mental contents, especially after a stressful situation (the latter triggered by laboratory-induced stress). We conclude that a multimethod assessment targeting smokers’ self-regulation attempts at both cognitive (i.e., thought suppression) and emotional levels could be useful to inform well-rounded interventions to break the “ruminative cycle”

Highly efficient CO2 electroreduction to formate using Bismuth nanodots within ZIF-8 scaffold
Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) based electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction offer unique possibilities for developing advanced materials for this reaction due to their ordered nanoporosity and pore environments, tunable characteristics and high affinity for CO2. Still, they were not investigated sufficiently. In this study, we developed a Bismuth nanodots embedded Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (BND-ZIF-8) electrocatalyst via a one-pot synthesis method for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR). Comprehensive spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization confirmed the successful integration of Bismuth into the ZIF-8 matrix. The electrocatalytic performance of the BND-ZIF-8 was assessed in multiple reactor typologies such as H-cell, flow cell, and membrane electrode assembly (MEA) setups. Remarkable differences in the performances in the three cell configurations are evidenced. Notably, the MEA configuration exhibited a marked enhancement in formate selectivity, achieving a Faradic efficiency (FE) of up to 91 % at a current density of −150 mA cm‒2. This work underscores the potential of Bi-ZIF-8 in advancing eCO2RR while remarking on the crucial importance of the appropriate type of electrocatalytic experiments in assessing the material performance
Graining and Texturing of Metal Surfaces by Picosecond Laser Treatment
Different approaches have been proposed to control the tribological behavior of materials under different conformal and non-conformal contact conditions with influenced surface texturing. The ever-increasing demand to improve material friction, erosion wear, and adhesion bond strength of coatings is a major concern for the contact interface of surfaces. Laser texturing is considered a promising approach to tuning materials’ tribological properties. The latter are strongly influenced by the texture density and shape imprinted on the engineered materials and vary in dry or lubricating conditions. In this work, the physicochemical properties of picosecond laser-textured surfaces of metallic materials have been systematically analyzed. Specifically, the wettability character of laser-textured materials was correlated with their morphological/compositional features
CFD Model for Thermal Impedance Evaluation of a SiC-Based Traction Inverter Considering Heat Coupling Effects
The aim of this study is to develop a transient thermal analysis by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to assess the thermal impedance of a SiC-based direct-cooled traction inverter from STMicroelectronics. Thermal impedance measurements are performed during a power cycle test. The virtual junction temperature of the switches is determined assuming the body diode voltage drop as a Temperature-Sensitive Electric Parameter (TSEP). In more detail, one switch is heated, and the junction temperature is measured by TSEP for the other switches, accounting for cross-heating between them. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis of the time step is performed to allow the adoption of a variable time step during the investigated time range. Following this analysis, the computational time required for the simulation is reduced by 60% compared to using a constant time step. Finally, the CFD results are compared with the TSEP results, demonstrating good accuracy
Quality of life, sexual function and metabolic parameters of women during 10 years of using the etonogestrel implant
Objective: To study the effects on the quality of life (QoL), sexual function and metabolic aspects in women using a subcutaneous implant containing Etonogestrel (ENG-implant) over 10 years of observation period. Study design: This study was performed from January 2011 to September 2023. A database was set up to collect data from women. Counseling on the ENG-implant to be inserted at the termination of pregnancy, and on insert a new device every 3 years was adopted. The Short Form-36 (SF-36), the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the Female Sexual Distress Scale (FSDS) questionnaires were used to investigate the QoL, sexual function and sexual distress, respectively, of women at baseline and at 6, 12, 24, 36, 72 and 108-month follow-ups. Blood samples were collected from women to measure metabolic parameters. Results: 32 of 52 (61.5 %) enrolled women completed the study. In summary, after removing the first (at 36th month of use) and the second implant (at 72nd month of use), 44 (84.6 %) and 32 (61.5 %) women asked for the insertion of a new device, respectively. Somatic (p < 0.001) and mental (p = 0.04) categories of SF-36 improved from the 12-month follow-up to the 108-month follow-up (p < 0.001). FSFI scores also increased from 12-month follow-up to the 108-month follow-up (p < 0.001). The improvement of the total scores depended on the gradual increase in each FSFI item (p < 0.001). FSDS score became statistically significant starting from the 12-month follow-up to the 108-month follow-up (p < 0.001). Although lipid metabolism, fasting glucose, liver function and hemostatic parameters were slightly reduced, they remained within the range of the normal values. Conclusions: The long observation period of 10 years allowed us to state that the ENG-implant could have neutral effects on metabolic parameters, promote a better quality of life, and improve sexuality in the users. The main limitation of our study was the small number of women enrolled, mainly due to the cost of the implant. These results should be confirmed on a larger sample
