    Knotted or unknotted? A theoretical quantum protocol for luminescence simulation of metallo-supramolecular knots

    Entangled structures are topological architectures often observed not only in the macroscopic world, but also at the molecular level with many examples in biological systems (DNA, RNA). In recent decades, these fascinating entities have aroused considerable interest among chemists with the advent of metallo-supramolecular knots. Notwithstanding the burgeoning of such metal complexes in literature, their use as luminescent emitters as well as systematic studies on their luminescence properties are still extremely limited. In view of this, a theoretical DFT protocol dedicated to luminescence profile simulations of these peculiar “entwined” species is highly desirable. In this work, we propose a robust and affordable DFT computational workflow able to recreate meticulously the emission band-shape of different metallo-supramolecular knots. As a result of a preparatory DFT benchmark, we decided to use HSEH1PBE/LanL2DZ level via Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics to explore the change in the coordination environment around the metal centers in the excited state (S1). Thereupon, a detailed recruiting of TD-DFT functionals recommended the mPW3PBE/LanL2DZ level as the most precise and transferable method to model accurately metallo-supramolecular knots emission spectra as metal ions, internal spacers and interlocking modes vary

    Vegetation pattern formation and transition in dryland ecosystems with finite soil resources and inertia

    The formation of vegetation patterns in dryland ecosystems and the transition between different morphologies are here investigated by means of a bidimensional hyperbolic reaction-transport model. The proposed conceptual framework represents an extension of the classical Klausmeier model in which the finite carrying capacity of the soil and the inertia of biomass and water are also taken into account. The main aim of this work is to elucidate how pattern dynamics occurring at, near and far from the instability threshold are affected by the combined action of limited soil resources, inertia and climate change. To achieve this goal, a threefold investigation is carried out. First, linear stability analysis is addressed to deduce the main pattern features associated with Turing patterns at the onset of instability. Then, multiple-scale weakly nonlinear analysis is employed to characterize the pattern amplitude close to onset. In particular, the study encompasses the description of different pattern morphologies which emerge when the excited eigenmode exhibits single or double multiplicity. Finally, the transition between different patterned states is investigated in far-from-equilibrium conditions, especially to emphasize the nontrivial role played by inertia in the ecosystem response. Numerical simulations are also used to corroborate analytical predictions and to shed light on some key aspects of vegetation pattern dynamics in the context of dryland ecology

    Recording of total locomotor activity in laying hens maintained under different light conditions

    Locomotor activity is a major component of animal behavior and an important animal welfare index. The daily individual total locomotor activity (TLA) of two different laying hens maintained under different conditions has been performed. Six Hy-Line W hens (HLWC) and six Hy-Line Brown (HLBC) were housed in conventional cages with controlled light programme (light on from 05:30 to 22:00); six Hy-Line Brown (HLBF) were housed in an open-air rearing system with a controlled light programme (light on from 08:00 to 18:00). Total locomotor activity was recorded on 11-minute interval for 20 consecutive days with Actiwatch-Mini placed on the wing. HLWC showed the lowest activity, and the HLBC was more active than HLBF. The average daily activity was diurnal. The activity increased at about 1 hour and a half after the switching light on and decreased immediately before the switching light off in each group. Several activity peaks were observed during the dark phase in groups living in cages. Single cosinor method showed all groups' daily TLA rhythm. The daily rhythm of TLA in hens is different based on line and housing conditions. The present findings could be useful in the chicken farming management

    Efficacy and Safety of Pulmonary Vasodilator and Inodilator Drugs in Congenital Heart Disease Surgery: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

    Background: Perioperative management of congenital heart disease (CHD) surgery presents a unique challenge due to significant pathophysiological alterations, with pulmonary hypertension contributing substantially to morbidity and mortality. Although pulmonary vasodilators and inodilators are commonly used, evidence of their efficacy and safety remains limited. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of vasodilators and inodilators in pediatric patients undergoing CHD surgery. Design: Systematic review with network meta-analysis. Data Sources: PubMed, CENTRAL, and Embase. Eligibility Criteria: We included single- or double-blind, parallel-group, randomized controlled trials comparing the perioperative use of vasodilators and inodilators in pediatric CHD surgery. We selected only English-language studies. We excluded crossover, non randomized trials and trials comparing the same drugs in all study arms. Results: We included 28 randomized controlled trials involving 3118 patients. Intravenous levosimendan ranked highest in decreasing postoperative mortality, although the effect was not statistically significant. Intravenous sildenafil and inhaled nitric oxide (NO) significantly reduced the duration of mechanical ventilation, and inhaled NO also significantly shortened the length of intensive care unit stay. Inhaled iloprost, NO, and enteral sildenafil reduced mean pulmonary artery pressure. No intervention significantly affected the incidence of acute kidney injury. Conclusions: Vasodilators and inodilators did not significantly decrease perioperative mortality in pediatric CHD. Some agents, such as intravenous sildenafil and inhaled NO, demonstrated modest benefits of questionable clinical significance regarding duration of mechanical ventilation, intensive care unit stay, and pulmonary pressure. The results are limited by small sample sizes, study heterogeneity, variability in standard care, and risk of bias, requiring cautious interpretation. Registration: CRD42024552531

    Compositional order of a symmetric hard-sphere mixture with cross attraction: Role of concentration

    We investigate a binary mixture of identical hard spheres, interacting through a square-well cross attraction. Recently, we have shown that the equimolar mixture exhibits stripe order (i.e., a regular alternation of layers filled with particles of mostly one species) in both solid and liquid phases [Prestipino et al., J. Chem. Phys. 159, 204902 (2023)]. Here, we extend our study to nonequimolar conditions. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we find a rich self-assembly behavior with several forms of compositional order, depending on the departure from equimolarity and the range of attraction. While stripes are still seen in the solid phase of the 30%/70% mixture, for a larger concentration asymmetry we rather observe fcc ordering of the minority species, provided that the range of attraction is long enough. Due to the possibility to adjust the concentration in the two phases, compositional order is generally richer at solid-vapor coexistence than in the bulk solid: we observe solid droplets with stripes, displaying either square or triangular in-plane order, as well as droplets with bcc structure and honeycomblike order of the minority species in the matrix of the other species. Finally, at sufficiently low temperature the increased concentration of minority particles in the solid droplet makes the cohesive energy at coexistence systematically larger than in the bulk solid

    State-Based Modeling and Anomaly Detection in Industrial Systems Using DEVS

    The Industrial Revolution changed the picture of industrial systems by making them highly efficient and more manageable. The inclusion of the internet, smart devices, and various protocols has collectively developed Industrial Control Systems (ICS), which are responsible for the entire industrial activity management. However, the devices in ICS may also malfunction and show abnormal behavior, affecting industrial activities. Hence, it is necessary to have a good abnormal condition detection system in ICS, but the presence of a real environment for developing such a detection system is challenging. Therefore, the proposed work addresses this challenge by modeling the ICS to mimic the actual behavior of the industries and collecting the relevant data to train a model for detecting anomalous behavior in the system. The work employed Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) as a modeling and simulation formalism for designing the ICS. Through this modeling system, the work collects the states associated with every device and trains a machine-learning model to deal with anomalies in ICS further. This work also aims to show the significance of the DEVS formalism in modeling the ICS and how its state-based data may be used further to make an artificial intelligence-oriented solution
