Insanity in the Works of W.G. Wills

    No full text
The chapter aims at a re-evaluation of the works of a once famous and now largely forgotten Victorian playwright, William Gorman Wills. Wills was once largely considered the most eminent poetic dramatist of the Victorian age, but the majority of his works are now forgotten, mostly due to the Ibsenist theatrical trends that came into full swing shortly after his death. His widely reported desultory working habits, his tendency to hoarding, and mood swings, which even his contemporaries struggled to define within the boundaries of the Victorian byword, “eccentricity”, clearly point to a constant struggle with crippling mental issues. The chapter focuses on Juanna and The Love That Kills to highlight how Wills explores, with deep sympathy and no trace of idealization or recurse to literary stereotypes, the dynamics of female and masculine mental disorders, the latter theme especially tabooed by the Victorian cult of masculinity and all-pervasive Carlylean anti-Werterism

Critical Agency and Creative Imagination: Snapshots of the Future Among Youth Networks of Activism in Italy

    No full text
Kairos is the fragile catching-up with the right moment; today when it happens in the high complexity in which we are living, it lets us glimpse what a sustainable future could be. This effort is crucial for contemporary youth movements that – especially with the economic “great recession,” the pandemic, and the emergency of climate change – tackled with uncertainty, individualization and crisis of representative politics. The aim of this chapter is to analyze this systemic issue with the help of a research fieldwork in Italy, based on the analysis of a network of experiences of youth mobilizations as reinvention of politics, characterized by the encounter of personal meaningful activities and innovative forms of cooperation in different fields, from worker rights to environment protection. These creative experimentations of emancipative activism, rooted in everyday troubles, in the local dimension, in horizontal relations, ina strategy characteristic of a time where the future can be glimpsed mainly from local and concrete experiences, rather than based on abstract long-term visions. the mutual recognition of fragility, represent a form of critical agency, but also These creative experimentations of emancipative activism, rooted in everyday troubles, in the local dimension, in horizontal relations, in the mutual recognition of fragility, represent a form of critical agency, but also a strategy characteristic of a time where the future can be glimpsed mainly from local and concrete experiences, rather than based on abstract long-term visions

    No full text

GENOMIC CHARACTERIZATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES IN UNRESOLVED HEREDITARY LEUKODYSTROPHIES

    No full text
Hereditary leukodystrophies and neurodevelopmental disorders represent heterogeneous groups of rare pediatric neurological diseases that remain difficult to diagnose despite advances in genomic medicine. Many affected individuals remain without a molecular diagnosis, reflecting the complexity of the underlying genetic architecture and the limitations of conventional sequencing approaches. This thesis aimed to improve the molecular diagnosis and characterization of unresolved leukodystrophies and neurodevelopmental disorders through the integration of advanced genomic technologies, detailed clinical phenotyping, and functional validation. Patients were recruited through international collaborations across neurogenetics centres in Italy and the United Kingdom and underwent comprehensive clinical evaluation, neuroimaging, and genomic analyses using whole exome sequencing, whole genome sequencing, and long read sequencing. The study identified novel variants in known disease genes and expanded the genetic and phenotypic spectrum of several neurogenetic conditions, including ATP6V1B2, SLC9A1, ITPR1, VPS13D, TUBB4A, and SLC25A15. In addition, translational investigations led to the identification of MED11 as a novel disease gene and the nomination of eEF2K as a candidate gene for hypomyelinating leukodystrophy. Overall, this work highlights the value of integrating genomic sequencing, functional studies, and international collaboration to reduce the diagnostic gap in rare neurogenetic disorders and to advance the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying leukodystrophies and neurodevelopmental diseases

Resilience Indicators for a Road Transport Network to Access Emergency Health Services

    No full text
The resilience concept, born for ecological systems, has been successfully adapted to other domains. Considering the case of transport networks, the evaluation of resilience is crucial to ensure their functionality. The objective of this paper is to provide a set of indicators that can be used to quantify the resilience of a transport network with particular attention to the access to emergency health services. The methodology adopted allows for obtaining some centrality measures and some metrics on network efficiency, to identify the most critical nodes and arcs in the network, and to determine how the removal of nodes/arcs affects efficiency. In this study, the resilience indicators of the road network of Messina, a city located in the northeastern tip of Sicily (Italy), are analyzed. The analysis focuses on three main emergency hospital facilities and, by examining the connectivity of the road network, the accessibility to these critical centers in different scenarios will be assessed. A relevant aspect of the proposed methodology is the exclusive use of open data in road network definition, which makes the procedure easily transferable to other areas. The results of the proposed application provide useful indications for improving road infrastructure and urban planning, as well as replicating the methodology in other geographical areas

Tutela della persona umana e cyberbullismo. La prospettiva costituzionalista

    No full text

Numerical Simulations and Experimental Tests for Tailored Tidal Turbine Design

    No full text
This paper outlines the design and testing of a horizontal-axis tidal turbine (HATT) at a scale of 1:20, employing numerical simulations and experimental validation. The design employed an in-house code based on the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory. As reliable lift and drag coefficients for this scale are not present in the literature due to the low Reynolds number of the airfoil, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to generate accurate polar diagrams for the NACA 4412 airfoil. The turbine was then 3D-printed and the rotor tested in a subsonic wind tunnel at various fixed rotational speeds to determine the power coefficient. Fluid dynamic similarity was achieved by matching the Reynolds number and tip-speed ratio in air to their values in water. Three-dimensional CFD simulations were also performed, yielding turbine efficiency results that agreed fairly well with the experimental data. However, both the experimental and numerical simulation results indicated a higher power coefficient than that predicted by BEM theory. The CFD results revealed the presence of radial velocity components and vortex structures that could reduce flow separation. The BEM model does not capture these phenomena, which explains why the power coefficient detected by experiments and numerical simulations is larger than that predicted by the BEM theory

Hemotropic mycoplasmas and Bartonella spp. in dogs from Southern Italy: prevalence and risk factors

Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) include several zoonoses and represent an important concern where veterinarians play a major role. Although usually responsible for asymptomatic infections in animals and humans, these agents may also have fatal consequences in immunocompromised patients. In this study, different categories of dogs from the Campania region (southern Italy) were investigated for three canine vector-borne bacteria (i.e., Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum, Mycoplasma haemocanis, and Bartonella spp.) by using specific real-time PCR protocols. Out of 187 dogs, 45 (i.e., 24.1%) tested positive for at least one pathogen, with Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum (14.4%) being the most prevalent, followed by Mycoplasma haemocanis (12.8%) and Bartonella spp. (1.6%). Coinfections with more than one agent were observed in 4.8% of the samples. The analysis of risk variables indicated province, activity, and lifestyle as risk factors associated with greater prevalence values. Non-hunting dogs (OR = 0.11) showed a significantly lower likelihood of being positive for at least one infection. Living outdoors (OR = 3.46), in Salerno province (OR = 13), had a higher likelihood of testing positive for at least one hemotropic species. These findings revealed a wide distribution of CBVDs in dog populations of the study area, clearly underlining the necessity for effective efforts to minimize ectoparasite activity

PATHWAY MOLECOLARI CHIAVE NELL’ENDOMETRIOSI: DALLA PROLIFERAZIONE CELLULARE ALLA SENSIBILIZZAZIONE DEL SISTEMA NERVOSO CENTRALE

    No full text
